When I was a child, we only had nonfat powdered milk to drink, and to use for cooking. We were very poor, so there was no choice. She would put a can of evaporated milk into a gallon of milk that she would make up. But, my mom would also put 1 drop of her special "love potion" to make it taste better, and we all felt very special. All it was was the dropper filled with vanilla and it sure made the milk taste a lot better.
She said 1 cup dry milk 3 cup water. I personally use 1 cup home freeze dried milk (goat or cow) to 2 cup water. I'll try more water but haven't tried it.
I'm 72 and live by myself, I only hit the grocery store once or twice a month, I freeze a gallon of milk in 5 quart mason jars, after it freezes I vacuum seal it and place it in gallon storage bags (bags only as insurance in case of jar breakage), I mainly use milk for cold cereal and baking, for baking I use powdered milk. I thaw out a jar of milk for the next two days usage for cereal. I've found for me 8 wks is the longest I like to use the frozen milk, freezing is a method to extend milk life over repeated trips to the store.

Yes. I rarely buy whole milk in the gallon. I live alone also and simply don't drink milk, I only cook with it (evaporated milk because it stays in the can). However, I recently bought regular whole milk and decided to pour it in different containers and freeze it. Definitely a good idea.
I live alone too and live pretty rural and shop like you 1 or 2 times a month. I'm going to try freezing milk. I freeze gallon plastic jugs of water in case I lose power and this is like having block ice. Saved my freezer goods many times doing this. It's good to have on hand too for coolers.
As a dessicant, my Grandmother use to take a 4 inch square of tightly woven cheese cloth and put a table spoon of cheap white rice in the middle and tie it up. She didn't have access to silica packs and this works perfectly with oxy absorbers!!! Just a thought.
@@foodprepguide Hi! Great video, channel!! I just started using silica packets in some foods, I don't use them with O2 absorbers but I vac seal the jars so not necessary. Couldn't you do this with the powdered whole milk?

This is one of the best food preservation video's on YT. You did a fantastic job of describing the products, the why's and why not's and you even included a pump demo. Most people don't even mention the fat content and what that means for shelf life. It would be nice to know how long the mason jar storage compares to Mylar bag storage. Thank you for adding the links to each site you use to order the different products. Awesome Job!
You are too kind! ❤️ I'm curious about the mylar vs mason jar, too. I do have some tests going, but I want to wait at least a year to see the results, so it'll be a while lol.
I worked on a remote island northwest of Hawaii. Any kind of milk was a treat. While I could smell and taste the difference, not having anything and drinking fresh water made from seawater was far worse. Suggest your kids understand that there are worse things that can happen in life.

Self stable milk in the carton is good over a year!!!!!! It’s great for one person and it keeps you home in bad weather. It’s an amazing product even if you say it’s not!!!!
I recently opened a can of Nido with a best buy date of 2019 and it was just fine. I was just at Walmart today and they had a bag of powdered whole milk. I checked the ingredients and it is just milk and vitamins A and D. I wonder about how economical it is though. The bag was 39.5 oz and cost $12.44, so about $0.31 per ounce. It makes 32 servings or about 2.25 gallons, which works out to about $5.50 a gallon. That's about $2 per gallon more than liquid whole milk. Of course, it is shelf stable so you don't have to worry about it going sour if you repackage it as you suggest. I bought a bag and will give it a shot!
I want to start off with saying how I appreciate you taking the time to create this video. I am new to food storing and canning. I've recently started purchasing whole powdered milk and I've been looking for recipes and how to store it. Your video was very detailed and very helpful for someone who is new to this. Also, thank you for letting me know about the pump and how to use it. This is a game-changer for me. Sincerely, Grateful, Appreciative - Hildie 🙏🏽
So glad to hear it was helpful to you! ❤️ If you're looking for recipes using powdered milk, we just published a video on how to make yogurt with it! ruclips.net/video/NO_I18zIt0s/видео.html
I use my freeze drier to make powder milk by using whole milk. Last over 20 years . Place milk into your trays and freeze milk in the freezer once frozen then place into freezer dryer once done then place in food processor, to turn into powder then package into jars or into milar bags . Be sure to take air out of the jars each time you open jar
Here is a tip to freeze dry any liquid. Instead of pouring the liquid onto the tray to freeze, which is very hazardous for spillage, I take a quart bag and fill it to the height of the tray and put like three or four of them on the tray, freeze, then cut the bags off of the frozen blocks of milk, and set them on the tray, then freeze dry them.
1. My maternal gma put evaporated milk, straight from can, onto hot cereals and called it cream along wit butter & sugar., delicious: mush, oatmeal, malto-meal. 2. When cooking calls for milk, I sub 25%(1/4) of required amount for evap milk to give richer flavor: 2oz (1/4 cup) of 1 cup (8 oz). 3. Mom would sub 25-33% in homechurned ice cream.
To make the store bought gallons last longer my mother used to add a little powered milk at a time to them when we weren't home and we didn't notice until she had done as few times. Thanks for video.
Thank you for posting these videos.... I stared dry canning in 2011...my sister made chill using red kidney beans that were dry canned in 2012...they were great
I also use a brake-bleeder pump to seal my mason jars. And since I’m a heavy milk drinker and hate to run out, I’ve been freeze-drying whole milk from my local market. But very recently I started buying delicious, super healthy unpasteurized milk from a local Amish family and now I’m very excited to see how it feeze-dries and reconstitutes 😁
I have whole milk powder that's probably 45 years old but factory sealed. It is still delicious surprisingly! It has most likely lost a lot of nutrition but I understand calories, carbohydrates, proteins, and minerals should have remain unchanged.
Very thorough, thanks so much! I use the shelf stable milk because I rarely drink milk but when I want it, I want it. Used to throw out a lot of regular milk when it spoiled. It is pretty easy to use a quart of the shelf stable stuff in a week's time and $1.25 for a quart of good milk is quite reasonable!
Thank you so much! You are the only person on line I have been able to find able to give me a sense of how long whole powdered milk will last. Love the hand pump idea. Brilliant!!!😊
Love your videos? Thought I’d share. I REALLY like the Forjars vacuum sealers. I have the food saver brand too. The Forjars vacuum sealer come in a 2 pack, one regular, one wide. Very well constructed. Historically, the food saver brand regular sealer can be problematic. Forjars sealers are much better made and come with a hand pump too.
Hi with the food saver regular mouth jars put your lid on then put another lid on upside down and then your vacuum sealer and it should seal then remove the spare lid i hope this helps cheers
I only use Nido whole milk. It's the list expensive that I've found and takes pretty good. Also we don't have young children who would drink it. My husband uses it mainly as coffee creamer and I use it in cooking, But I appreciate the alternatives you listed and will try them when the price comes down. I also appreciate the info on long term storage and will begin doing that now! P.S. Another content creator "Alaska Granny" says she uses Nido Fortificado as well, and she opened a can that was almost 3 yrs passed the best buy date. She stored it in the original can, in a cool, dry place and opened it on the video. It not only had beautiful color, no lumps or clumps, it smelled and tasted fine. She said she felt confident they could be store safely as long as 5 years.
When i vacuum seal powders i cut a coffee filter to size and place inside of jar to cover so that it doesn't get sucked up under lid to secure the seal.
I’m so glad I found your channel. I did not know this about the fat content or lack of it in powdered milk. I normally purchase a box of dried milk or a couple of containers of shelf stable milk at the start of winter just to be sure I had milk in the house as a just in case. I have been looking into ways to keep foods fresh longer and what foods can be best kept in my cabinets for the longest time. Thank you for the education regarding powdered milk.
Welcome to the channel! 👏 I hope you enjoy browsing as we have lots of videos on foods that keep well in the pantry and how to make fresh food last longer. ❤️
as child all we had was powered milk in a can. that was until i was 11 yo. I liked it and would eat it dry (maybe about a tablespoon at time, more of a snack). Still eat it dry at times. sometime on ice cream, or mix it with chocolate syrup.
I buy evaporated milk for cooking, and I rotate religiously. I buy whole milk powder from Hoosier Hill, and use it for meals in a jar, etc. True, not a longer shelf life, but it works for us. Plus, we raise mini cows, so, fresh milk is abundant here.
Several months ago, I tried but could not find reliable info anywhere on how to preserve powdered whole milk for long (12-18 month) storage). You answered all of my questions beautifully. After watching your video, I went ahead and confidently increased my Azure Standard powdered whole milk order! Thank you very much! PS: I have a brake bleeder as well as a Food Saver with attachments. Hint: I noticed lots of times, a regular Mason jar lid doesnt want to seal after the air is sucked out…particularly with the Foodsaver attachment. You pull off the attachment; and, oftentimes, the regular lid comes off, too. So, I took a regular lid and used a nail to punch a hole in the middle. I take the lid with the hole and put it on top of a regular lid - both stacked on top of the jar. Then cover both lids with the regular lid attachment. After vacuum sealing, remove the attachment; and the top lid…the one with the hole…falls off and is reusable; but the lid underneath stays on.
Ive stored that same powdered milk in its original container unopened for well over a year and its perfectly fine no funky taste or smell. I love that stuff and drink it like its my favorite beer.
The skyrocketing cost of food is really killing our bank account lately and I was intrigued by your statement about how you all only shop for groceries monthly, and some things yearly. Do you have a video on how to go about this? Your budget? What you get per month and how much? What you get yearly and how much?

@@foodprepguide thanks a ton. Will pour over these. Been trying to start a serious garden but the sonoran desert isn't kind to such plants, especially this year. On top of having a vegetarian wife and two small children who won't eat anything new, I feel like I'm pounding my head against a concrete wall at times trying to meal plan
We use the brake bleeder for all of our mason jar vacuum sealing and only use the electric vacuum sealer for the bags in dry foods and freezer items. Looking forward to buying a vacuum chamber sometime this year for all the commercial jars we have stored. Great info in this video and I might add the Nido whole milk powder works great for oven baked scallop potatoes and cream style corn.🙂
Thank you that was very helpful! I got tired of having so much milk spoil, since I use very little and have started to purchase milkpowder, and was not sure what to do with it.
IF more folks would "share" the website link on their Facebook page to public, more folks might open her platform and find value in her info and demos just as I have. Get to Sharing !
I am a newbie here. I love the ideal of storing dried products. I am not a milk drinker. I love making my own pancake mix up, so I use powdered milk in it. Years ago, when my kids were small, we lived in Alaska. Milk was pretty expensive, so we used powdered milk. My ex was military, and we only shopped once a month. It took awhile to get used to.
We buy the Walmart brand whole milk....we poke a few holes at the very top and then vacuum seal it in a vacuum seal bag. We can see whats it is because the bags are clear...Plus, our basement stays the same range temperatures.. Great video, now I'm curious about your others...Thanks for sharing this....sounds like were on the right track.
I do not have mason jars .. I left the powdered milk in it’s original bag .. made a tiny slit in the top, folded it over and placed it in a vacuum seal bag, then extracted the air. Then put in fridge.they have been in there for 18 months .. I guess I should open one and check it out.
Just bought some jars, lids, etc. AND the FoodSaver jar lid set. I have not used them yet, but do have some large cans of powdered milk. I have some plastic "squirt" bottles for condiments, etc. and I use one for the powdered milk for my morning coffee(s). I have a fairly small kitchen and a LOT of appliances and gadgets, but I am in the planning and re-structuring the kitchen so I can get back to cooking and prepping my meals (for health reasons). Thank you for the video, and the free download though I'm not sure that I have the energy to maintain a list. We shall see. God bless your family.
I'm not a big milk drinker, but in a SHTF event I store cereal so milk is a must have, so is whole milk. I can't find it in the stores. Thanks for the link on Amazon.
I put all my glass jars in hubbys old black socks. Those socks provide padding for the glass and darkness to the contents. I still label the lids, but also a general label on the shelf.. . veggies -fruit-beans-meat-milk- etc and of course a rail ( not for earthquake, but just my being clumsy-lol)
Welcome! ❤️ Here's the pump - amzn.to/3tjh0Fn And you'll need this Mason jar attachment if you don't have it already - amzn.to/3zXg25u We have a video that details 5 different sauces we make with it, but you'll need to reconstitute the powdered milk first. You'll add 1/4 cup of powdered milk to 1 cup of water to get 1 cup of milk. I usually reconstitute a quart jar's worth at a time and just pour from that for sauces. Here's the video - ruclips.net/video/A4ZvbIP5QmQ/видео.html For future reference, if you see other videos and wonder about the tools used, they're almost always linked in the description box. ❤️
Oh my goodness! That is outrageous! I use it in my coffee, if it goes that high here, I will probably stop drinking coffee. I'm in Texas, north of Dallas, was $1.29 a can at my local Kroger yesterday, their store brand.
I use evaporated milk for coffee or tea, but not to replace whole milk. I use dry whole milk as a creamer and to keep small jars of milk in the refrigerator. For hot chocolate I add powder to hot milk, with cacao & a pat of butter. If you drink low fat milk buy whole milk and fill a pint jar with equal parts of water & milk. If that's still to fat, add less milk and more water. (Note: whole milk costs the same as low fat; the dairy uses milk fat for cream & butter products.) Thanks for all your tips...great advice.☺️
When I was growing up, I was the youngest when everybody graduated, I was in the 7th grade. With all my siblings graduating, my parents got rid of the goats our main source of milk. My mother switched to powdered milk, which I thought taste of absolutely horrible. Then a friend of hers told her that if she added powdered creamer in a cup and mixed it up until it was dissolved she could add it to her gallon of milk and it would make it taste a lot better. Well, it did but it tasted best when it’s very cold. However, I have found it putting a tablespoon of creamer in powder milk along with powdered milk in dry cake mixes, At this time, I also add my homemade powdered eggs. Homemade powdered eggs are excellent and baking, but horrible and eating. !I can vacuum seal it and when it’s time to make the cake , I just have to add water. I tried it and I baked a cake couldn’t tell the difference. So I have stored plenty of cake mixes with the added powdered milk and powdered eggs.
NIDO has a whole milk powder that isn't baby formula. You can buy it at Holy Land Groceries, my local Walmart has it or on line. NIDO Whole Milk Powder. I always have a small can in my freezer.
Great video. I buy whole powdered milk on Amazon because I am not a milk drinker and I have had it go bad in the fridge repeatedly. What a waste of money! I am honestly, however, as interested in that air extraction system as I am in the milk tutorial. LOL! EDIT: I just picked up a small battery powered unit for $6.99 that was on a lightning deal and no brake pump required. Mabye later I'll do the manual pump. Paid for with Amazon points, even better.

Back in the days. POWDER MILK WAS NASTY TASTING. Now ITS JUST LIKE WHOLE MILK NOW. I got a 50 lbs. bag > THIS IS HOW I STORE IT Get some gallon baggies, Fill up the baggies with the powder milk, PRESS THE AIR OUT OF THE BAG AND SEAL IT UP.. I put it in a big Ice cooler. That how i store it IN BAGGIES IN A ICE COOLER

A 1 to 4 ratio is 1 part powdered milk to 4 parts water, ie. 1 cup of powdered milk to 4 cups water.
I agree with you and I think she didn't realize that she said it wrong after giving the ratio
She said 1 cup dry milk 3 cup water. I personally use 1 cup home freeze dried milk (goat or cow) to 2 cup water. I'll try more water but haven't tried it.
Could be depends on brands?
She said it wrong. She meant 1 to 3 but she said 1 to 4.
That's what I was always taught too!

I wonder why the instruction manual says not to FD dairy. Do you have any insight as to why that is? I might just have to try it. 🤔
@@foodprepguideI agree this is an interesting idea. I intend to look further into this freeze drying method
Thank you for sharing these great tips! ❤️
Really refreshing to see a young person who is so disciplined!!! Rare these days.....
To God be the glory! ❤️
I have used canned milk to cook with and it works pretty good.
Nido can be found in the Hispanic food section as well in the grocery store
This is the first video I've watched on the channel. NOW I'm subscribed. Thank you for your advice.
Welcome to the channel! 👋🙂
Ditto, my first vid too thank you bunches
First time listener. Thank you for good factual information. Just subscribed. ❤
Welcome to the channel! ❤️
Me, too.
To make the store bought gallons last longer my mother used to add a little powered milk at a time to them when we weren't home and we didn't notice until she had done as few times. Thanks for video.
Smart Mom! ❤️
I left mine in it's package and it's 5 years old. I used it recently and it was fine.
Wow!!
Thank you for all the handy tips!
I make yogurt all the time with powdered milk. It tastes great.
I've been wanting to try that! So glad to hear it works well. :)
Great idea!
I had opened my dried milk powder so this is very timely. Thank you!
A family of 7 I grew up on powdered milk! The regular is fine with me. It does the same! I store milk!
Thank you so much! You are the only person on line I have been able to find able to give me a sense of how long whole powdered milk will last. Love the hand pump idea. Brilliant!!!😊
Glad I could help!
Thank you for sharing! ❤️
Great idea to use it as coffee creamer. 🙂
Gr8 podcast. You deliver content very well. I hope your husband appreciates what a treasure you. God bless.
Thank you! He does. I’m a blessed woman to have him. ❤️
When i vacuum seal powders i cut a coffee filter to size and place inside of jar to cover so that it doesn't get sucked up under lid to secure the seal.
Smart! We use a muffin liner when it’s needed. 🙂
And tastes so much better, too. The non-fat powdered milk is hardly more than water to me. 🤷♀️
Thank you so much for this ... Finally a video that makes sense and tells me everything I'm wondering ❤️❤️ thank you very helpful
So glad it was helpful! ❤️
I can milk in the pressure canner, not USDA approved but has been done successfully for decades. Ten minutes per pint .
Azure's whole milk is wonderful!
I get cartons from the church food shelf by the case. Right now we need it.
What a wonderful thing to have when needed!
@@foodprepguide yes! It’s been a rough year.
Great tip!! Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Look at temu they have a cordless Mason sealer works great
NEVER ORDER FROM TEMU BECAUSE THE CHINESE WILL BE ABLE TO TRACK "YOU" AND YOUR INFORMATION 😮😮
My friend got me an electric mason jar vacuum sealer that you charge with a USB charger, for my birthday. I'm hoping that will work well.
We have one, too. If it's a good brand, it should work well! 🙂
Thank you so much for the wisdom and knowledge you have shared for us. God bless you and your family. From Nagaland, India.
Very helpful, I like your vacuum pump!
Ive stored that same powdered milk in its original container unopened for well over a year and its perfectly fine no funky taste or smell.
I love that stuff and drink it like its my favorite beer.
Good to know!
The skyrocketing cost of food is really killing our bank account lately and I was intrigued by your statement about how you all only shop for groceries monthly, and some things yearly.
Do you have a video on how to go about this? Your budget? What you get per month and how much? What you get yearly and how much?
We have several videos that discuss different aspects, but not everything you've mentioned in one. Here are some videos that may be helpful & answer some of your questions:

@@foodprepguide thanks a ton. Will pour over these. Been trying to start a serious garden but the sonoran desert isn't kind to such plants, especially this year. On top of having a vegetarian wife and two small children who won't eat anything new, I feel like I'm pounding my head against a concrete wall at times trying to meal plan
I've also found the can cream price out of my range. Glad to see the powered milk. Thank you
Great really useful info. Just see the small electric mason jar sealer even easier
I haven't even thought about using it in our scalloped potatoes. I need a side dish for tonight. I think I'll try it! Thank you for sharing. :)
Thank you that was very helpful! I got tired of having so much milk spoil, since I use very little and have started to purchase milkpowder, and was not sure what to do with it.
Glad it was helpful! 🙂
I found your channel today.

Thank you! 🤗
I'm able to store mine in Mason jars and in the drawer of extra refrigerator. I don't pay much attention to dates, tho I do mark everything
Welcome to the channel! ❤️ We use it for all our gravies and rouxs. 🙂

Powdered milk is the best to have on hand. Not only can it be used in baking and cooking, it is great for mixing your own drink mixes like cocoa too.
Yes! So multipurpose. ❤️
Homemade hot cocoa mix so much better
I've been finding Canned evaporated milk to be really good for baking needs
I have stocked up with alot of powered milk
A squirt bottle for milk powder - what a great idea! Blessings. ❤️

I'm not a big milk drinker, but in a SHTF event I store cereal so milk is a must have, so is whole milk. I can't find it in the stores. Thanks for the link on Amazon.

I put mine in a paper bag then vacuum seal in *vacuum seal bags. I hope it’s good for a long time 😀
Great idea I will try this, don't have jar sealer.
Thank you. I’m new at this, I’m going to do it. I have a vacuum sealer and mason jars. Awesome
Vacuum sealing Mason jars is entirely too fun. LOL
Aloha hugs 🤗 Glass Breaks in a Earthquake Glass everywhere
You can secure your jars by having railings across your shelves . I put all my preserves behind a rail.
I have been looking for an alternative to buying whole milk. This is great information thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
First time seeing you❤ Thank You. Where do you get pump and how can I learn to make cream soups and other recipes with the powder milk? Thank You
Welcome! ❤️ Here's the pump - amzn.to/3tjh0Fn
And you'll need this Mason jar attachment if you don't have it already - amzn.to/3zXg25u
We have a video that details 5 different sauces we make with it, but you'll need to reconstitute the powdered milk first. You'll add 1/4 cup of powdered milk to 1 cup of water to get 1 cup of milk. I usually reconstitute a quart jar's worth at a time and just pour from that for sauces. Here's the video - ruclips.net/video/A4ZvbIP5QmQ/видео.html
For future reference, if you see other videos and wonder about the tools used, they're almost always linked in the description box. ❤️
Those cans of evaporated Milk are $3.98 where I live. I buy the Full Fat powdered milk, it is great if sealed and placed in the freezer .
Yes, it’s crazy how much evaporated milk has gone up since we posted this video!
@GoldenAgeOfAquarius888
Thank you. I was wondering about sealing then freezing.
That is so crazy, up to 1.50 here for store brand, check labels same ingredients
Oh my goodness! That is outrageous! I use it in my coffee, if it goes that high here, I will probably stop drinking coffee. I'm in Texas, north of Dallas, was $1.29 a can at my local Kroger yesterday, their store brand.
@@QuantumAscensionAlchemist where are you located, in KY at Walmart GV brand showing today 1.22 42 oz can, Carnation brand is 1.72 10 oz can
I use evaporated milk for coffee or tea, but not to replace whole milk.
Thanks for sharing your tips!
What a great tip about the creamer & powdered eggs! Thank you for sharing. 🙂
You may consider adding a touch a vanilla. About a teaspoon or so to a litre of milk.
@@ewanmee9877
Sounds like a good idea. I even bought some powdered vanilla so I could use some of that and stored away in a vacuum sealed container
I buy both whole and fat free powdered milk, when I make a qt of milk I add couple tablespoons while milk powder makes it taste better
Have been stocking up powdered milk the last have 50 gallons worth everytime went to store
Wow! 🥛
NIDO has a whole milk powder that isn't baby formula. You can buy it at Holy Land Groceries, my local Walmart has it or on line. NIDO Whole Milk Powder. I always have a small can in my freezer.
I never knew that. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
I have used. BOTH. Just more nutrients in the childrens. I use it in my coffee and matcha
I’ve seen several preppers and I myself do this, put desiccant on the bottom then food then O2 on top. It seems to do fine.
Love your channel btw ❤

I just got one and used it. I pumped up to 15-17 psi and jar was sealed.
Very useful. Thank you. I have some whole milk powder I bought over a year ago. I haven’t opened it yet. I hope it’s still good.

Azure Standard sells A2A2 powdered milk in bulk which is a great option.
I had no idea! Thank you. :)
@alexandrareynolds1761
I saw the A2A2 powdered milk on Azure. What's the difference between that and their other powdered whole milk?
@@pamskinner9490 Good question, not sure what the difference is, all I notice that A2 milk gives me less bloating and is easier to digest.

How do you clean your Mason jars before putting food in them ?
I just wash with warm, soapy water or run them through the dishwasher.
Thank you.
Nice!!
Do you have recipes to share on the different sauces and gravies you mentioned using the milk for?
