Thank you . I received your text to txt you but wasn’t sure if it was really you . The article I was asking about was not from the USDA if I remember correctly . I really think it is a lot longer than that . ( that you can keep foods ) ❤️
I pay no attention to best buy dates. If I open something and it looks and smells good, regardless of the date, that’s good enough for me. The only time I’ve ever had food poisoning was from a restaurant. We rarely eat out anymore, anything served in my kitchen is healthier and cleaner anyway.
The best buy dates is more for the corporations not getting sued, and I guess it's cheaper for them to just throw away and make more. Something like that.😅🤷♂️
We were snowed in for a week and my non prepping neighbors begged for food. I gave them some cans with past the BB date. They threw them away. They best not EVER ask again.
I made meals for people during the pandemic ......one was a girl friend that was a house keeper so no money coming in for her . one was a older man all by himself he was always helping people in AA there where others ......I have a pretty good food storage . I surprised my self about how generous I was BUT you need to keep the upper hand .......dont tell people what you have follow your gut ! God bless Nancy
Absolutely!!! We ate what my mama cooked and not once did any of our family get food ☠️ ng. My mama had chicken noodle soup from 2014 in her pantry when she passed away. I saw the can was perfect and smelled it when I opened it, heated it real good and hot and ate it at her kitchen table crying like a baby. It was perfect! I miss my mama so much 😢She went to be with the Lord in 2019. 😢
There was some code on cans, jars, and packaging, that only the insiders of the industry would be able to decipher. Quite on purpose too, to avoid the obsession with dates we see today, and all the waste of perfectly good edible food.
Wow. That's the longest I've heard. 55 years!? 1969-2024? Wowsa! So... The first case of botulism was from a can of greenbeans. Didn't it concern you, even just a little? 😄 Anyways, thanks for sharing. That's wild!
I'm not arguing with you; you do you. We mostly ignore commercial best buy dates too. I'm an only safety tested recipe canner. Two points: You can't assume something commercially canned can also safely be canned at home. Completely different equipment and temperatures. And, botulism has no smell. You won't know a food has botulism until you get sick. Everyone needs to decide on their own level of risk.
I wrote the book, "The Preppers." Before writing it I called Hormel . My question was: "What's the real shelf life of Spam?" I was I the phone for a few minutes and talked to different 4 people. I told him I was writing a book and wanted factual information. I was finally told, "We actually don't know. We have to place a date on it . We've heard all the stories, about people opening old cans and it still being good, but you should still go buy the date for freshness." So, it's up to the consumer. Personally, I'ver been a Prepper since 1978. My folks were into it starting with the Cuban missile crisis. Lots of long-term canned goods storage. The only thing I've seen go bad, was tomato products. Some rust coming through at the cans seems. The worst was sauerkraut. Bad news . Really bad news. Always buy the jars and never a can for storage. Great vid, thanks.
The problem you had was with high acid foods, such as fruit, tomato products, and sauerkraut. The acid degrades the plastic lining in the can over time. Eventually, the acid is exposed to the metal, and the reaction causes a gas that builds up in the can that can cause the can to budge and/or break a seam. High acid foods are best stored in glass.
Haven't had any problems with the plastic lined cans, only the older unlined cans. I'm talking about off the shelf store cans. Very few foods today are sold in glass. Everything is going to plastic. Been storing food since the late 70's. Please google my book, "The Preppers." David F. Larson. I have had pretty much no problems storing anything. Lots of debate in the pepper world on food storage. There really shouldn't be. It's all common sense. If one can buy products in glass, that's a big plus.
@davidlarson....I still see your advertisements for your book and life story of prepping. I try to buy high acid foods, such as you have named in glass jars for this reason. to me is safer.
I had some of the Bacon flavored Spam that was probably 8yrs old and noticed the cans were bulging on the sides, so I fed it to the raccoons even though it smelled fine when I opened them. Never had that problem with other types of Spam but it wasn't worth the risk.
4 years of my childhood life I lived on a reservation in Texas and 4 years of high school years I lived on a Texas cattle ranch, in both places we had no electricity nor indoor plumbing, we ate smoked and salted meat in both and canned our food in jars too,
I was annoyed at my granddaughter she checked all the dates on my mums tinned food and threw them away!!!! Aaahhhh god i was mad with her, her argument being they were out of date😢

I would be very ticked off of that happened too. Just because something's out of date does not mean that it's not good. The army corps of engineers found a 25-year-old can of corn they opened it and tested it the only thing that was lacking was a few of the vitamin contents other than that there was nothing wrong with the food. So by throwing food out you just wasted all of that and all the money. Not only that people are going to want and eat and not complain about expired food because they're going to be starving and hungry if anything put the can stuff back and get fresh but don't throw it out but it's better that you just keep it and put the fresher stuff back behind the stuff that's going out of date. As long as the cans are not popped busted or rusted the food's going to be good. But people can do whatever they want. People don’t know what they don’t know. Maybe someone should have showed her a video like this and taught her. She was just trying to keep her from getting sick.
I made the mistake of storing my shock treatment (water purification) in the same closet as some of my canned goods. A bag of shock opened somehow and every bit of metal in the closet rusted, food in cans was thrown away. Store shock treatment outdoors.
When it comes to storing food for long term, it's all about locations and conditions....cool, dry and dark..... In our basement, it stays 68 degrees pretty much except for those few extreme cold days, it will get around 58 to 60 degrees... Thank you Rudy, have a blessed day everyone.
I'm in the Baltics and my cellar gets down to refrigerator temps but with little or no moisture there is no sweating it the air temperature rises and the cans and jars are cold. Only problem I have is things like olive oil or oil packed veggies have to come upstairs or it separates. This is a great video. Only wish we had a Spam here. That I miss.
Temps here can get to 44C plus and so impossible to have those nice cool temps. We ate Spam from 2014 last year. No worries, tasted like good ole Spam..
I buy canned meats by bulk. Freeze dried meats too. I knock on the top and bottom of the can. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Then i check for bubbling. No bubbling, all good. Bubbling, toss it. If it bubbles, you can push in on the center and it will pop. No bubbling, eat until you're full. 👍
G'Day Rudy I will let you know that a can of SPAM down here in Australia at Woolworths will cost you $6.80 a tin! I wait till it is on special for like $5.00 a tin. We don't get those tins of beef however we do get some cooked meats with vegetables that are made in Poland which are very nice and they are$4.50 a can except another product called Goulash which is $5.00 a tin. The cheapest tin meat is Woolworths home brand spam which comes from Brazil at $3.75 a tin. I don't know if you have heard of Plumrose but they do tin sausages like you ate and tins of cooked ham and they are more expensive than SPAM. Aldis is the cheapest place to shop but don't always have everything one needs plus Australia is not cheap to live in down here.
Except for Campbells Meat Sauce, Pecks Paste, and Harvest brand-steak & veg, Sausages etc..Just need to keep an eye on 1/2 price off specials.Aldi is good for bulk buying on trout in cans.Gee, I got a thumbs up this late in the game? Whoever you are , be it a 3 letter agency or whatever, we understand, and we are all going alone, US or other
I have noticed that chili has been a bit low on store shelves the last few years. It has gotten expensive, too. I try to keep stocked up- great barter item. And yes, I make chili as well.
My sister-in-law gave me 6 jars of home canned tuna that i had canned for her back in 2011. It was 2023. It looked good, smelled good, 8:35 was still sealed well, and it tasted awesome!
I’ve been using my canned meats that I canned for soups and salads. They are about a year past when most would not consume it. I have enjoyed them and still here and well.
In Colorado, my local king soopers is running a sale for 2 for $7 normally $3.99. My local Walmart has the spam at $3.58 but the great value store brand at $2.18. On 1 video I heard Rudy say he actually liked the great value brand better than the actual Spam brand
As you were talking about the price of Spam I looked it up on my Walmart app, I'm in Florida, $3.58. Also here in Florida it's not always easy to keep our food storage as cool as you suggest especially during the heat of summer (I can't always stay as cool as I'd like lol), so I appreciate the safety tips on what to look for with the cans.
Wow the timing of this video is wacky. I was JUST having this exact convo with my son yesterday, trying to explain everything you said in this video. Good timing!
Great video! Yes, we really have to get past the "conditioning" we've been subjected to. My mom canned a lot of food (because my dad grew A LOT) and consequently, we had some jars for years. They were great, even when they were 10 years old. I got out some peaches before Christmas that were 10 years old, and we are still here to tell the tale! They had lost some flavor, but they were still a sweet treat.
Great idea with the dates in marker, I will definitely try that. Thank you and let me say my husband and I love your insight and honesty you explain and are clear spoken. Cheers from Canada
Where I am in PA Spam is about $3.58 per can at Walmart and I think $3.99 at Redners (supermarket). I did get a case of 12 from Amazon that came out to $2.49 per can which I thought was a great deal.
Thanks for the tip, I just bought a case of spam from amazon, subscribe and save for $2.14 a can. I wouldn’t have looked on amazon for spam, thanks for sharing.
I have canned turkey and chicken as well. And I love my bacon and Hamburg that I canned. It last a very long time. As long as the seal is good we are good. Just went thru my pantry and everything looks good.
Just a quick couple notes about SPAM. Everyone be knocking that stuff, but I guarantee you, if you're starving, that meat is going to taste like the third heaven! First off, if you're good with a knife, slice it thin, like baloney thin, then boil it a few minutes, when you take it out, you won't have that salty "Spammy" taste, it will taste really pleasant. Then fry it up with eggs, or hashbrowns, or make a sandwich out of it. Really, it's good.
Thank you once again for doing a taste test. You and Heidi over at Rain Country have done a lot to alleviate worry for perfectly good items in our food pantries.
Oh another thing..can tomatoes and acid food will not last as long as other canned foods. So you open up store bought canned tomatoes and other acidic foods and re-can it in your jars that way they will last longer! Be careful be cautious be mindful be watchful be prepared above all PRAY.🛐📖🙏🕊️ show ❤️ like Jesus then if need be 🔫🏹 then victory 🙌🙌
Gidday Alaska Prepper. The only time I had to use up a canned ham was when it fell out of my pantry and the seal was broken. I put it into my fridge and used it in a bolognese sauce and it was good. Other than that, the only items that have spoiled have been long life cheddar cheese (pay attention to the use by date), a can of baked beans with cheese, and tomato soups. As for the long life cheddar, if you can store it in your fridge or freezer, it will last longer but will be crumbly, best for grated cheese.
I have a dozen cans of Spam that I put away in 1999 for Y2K. This is at a lake cabin in east Texas. I opened a can a couple years ago and it looked and smelled good. Eventually, I will have to open a few cans and put them in the hot sun all day and then use for catfish bait. Anyone want to try and eat a can?
You need to be careful putting your nose so close to the jar, you need to hold it a little away from your nose and sniff, if it is bad you will smell it but there are some poisonous spores that can be inhaled through mucus membranes in the nose and make you very sick.
I have dozens of jars of vegetables, soups, meats, and sausages. Out of about 200 jars, I've found 2 pints of ham & bean soup that spoiled (badly) from broken seals. I didn't need to open them because it as very visable, and the lid just lifted off with no effort. I have occasionally eaten meals from all of these and had no problems. One important note is to make sure you take the jar rings off because they can make the seal look fine when it's not. I also don't care for the brats that I canned as they get really mushy and hav a totally different texture.
I have canned bacon. I roll up three strips and put it in an 8 ounce jar, and then can it in the top of my canner when i do a load of quarts, or finish up the load when I double up on pints (meat). I'm not canning to sit down and eat bacon, I'm canning to add flavour to dishes like vegetables or a casserole, maybe add to a sandwich. I doubt it needs to be canned that long, but it's a "filler" in the canner, anyway, so who cares? Those three strips add a lot of taste!
I believe you because I eat months ago clam Chowder soup which was 4 1/2 years expired then I eat can of tuna that’s bus almost 6 year expires those of us perfect nothing wrong with it because the jar was in good condition I believe you because I try myself
i opened a jar of bacon bits i canned in 2014. cooked it in a quiche last month. was still good. glad you spoke about the seal. my older jars still have a tight seal. i had to throw away many jars of the newer lids processed that came undone after months on the shelf! now i buy superb and tattler. those are good so far.
I want to know how to store canned goods in interior Alaska and keep them from freezing in the winter aka remote cabin etc. thanks for the throw back to eating beyond the bbd!!!
I used a can of store brand spam the other day. The best buy date was a couple years ago. It tastes like real spam and was pretty good in the egg scramble we had for breakfast. Other than being quite salty to me ...yum. hubby went back and fried up a couple thin slices in the cast iron skillet.
Ap I have comqe across with the situation where my home canned meat went bad but it was with one of those new electric canner. I'll never trust an electric canner again. It was sealed and I noticed 4 days after I canned it, it looked off..so I opened it oh my Goodnesses the smell! The good thing is I now know what bad canned goods smell like was so bad. I'll never use one again I've never had that happen with a stove canner.
@@cm9743 I know some ppl love them they never had a problem but for me I'll never trust it again. Unlike a stove canner I can hear it's at proper presure. We had to stay in hotels traveling for the military and I thought this would be great bc I can still can in the hotel since we were living off a mini frig... wrong made me so sad.
I wish Costco still had this those roast beef cans! I'm definitely going to stock up on my canned meats, even IF they aren't something we are used to or our favorite. Thank you AP!
great ideas, however, there is just so much salt in these items, and it's not a good option for those who have had kidney stones. Can you do an episode on items with low sodium? I would be so greatful.
I have spam , dak ham, chicken, tuna, beef and pulled pork, that some have dates older than 2019,just check the seal and do the smell test before you eat them!
All American Spam, yes it's my Daddy's fav "meal" lol. My pantry is well stocked up for him❤. My smell/taste is off so I don't want to risk canning my own meats, so cans of chicken it is. Thanks for doing this taste test, we really appreciate YOU.
I want to know too. We have a great mercado very close to us. Those cans of tomato sauce and sardines have a picture on top of the can with delicious looking sardines in tomato sauce. Anyone know???
I have some bread & butter pickles and some split pea soup with ham that I canned back in 2012 and the jars are still sealed tight and probably still good.
I just found this video.almost two years ago I went through my freezers and canned, beef chunks, hot pack turkey, corn beef and chicken. I’m an elder and live alone. Was getting a bit Leary for it to be sitting so long. Have a case of each and two cases of red salmon. Did that much because if any of my adult children needed food for them and the grandchildren I could help them.they never think about doing stuff like that. I Do have the bunch of spam, Vienna, sausage and Costco beef and canned chicken. I Need to find some of that Dak hams I can never find them anywhere in Juneau.with my Augason farm I will be making soup starters with them, I will just need to add some different meats and broth. Need to find you bacon for I can can some up also. Have about 10 lbs in my freezer that I vacuum sealed.when I do open anything I do smell and taste it before cooking something.thanks you for sharing your information.

Last week I ate a seasoned tuna pouch from 2019. Opened it, smelled it, and devoured it. I’m still kicking.
I no that's right
I’ve been eating 2014-2015 canned meats I canned and have bought…absolutely safe.

I found a case of canned dog food dated 2018. My dog has been enjoying it no problem!

The 2 qualities of food that degrade 1st, do not have an odor, or can be seen. One is texture, and the other is the nutritive value.

It's tough to do in Florida.
You can do it, but it isn't going to last the same
Have you ever heard of a root cellar?
We don't have cellars in Florida. The terrain here is not the same as in the north or out west. @@donaldfrazier5244
Rudy can you do a video on how to store cooked bacon in a mason jar? Is that paper in the jar? Thanks
That’s parchment paper
I don't eat pork and I've never eaten Spam, but I I may try the Turkey variety this weekend if available. The Kirkland roast beef looks good.
The Kirkland roast beef is good. When I check last week, they had put it on sale.
"i take it back" famous last words....
You’re welcome! I also got a case of 24 cans of the Vienna Sausages for $15.99.
I have canned turkey and chicken as well. And I love my bacon and Hamburg that I canned. It last a very long time. As long as the seal is good we are good. Just went thru my pantry and everything looks good.
I've been about 6 months eating on my canned salmon from Sam's club. Exp., 2017. God bless us all.
LOVE the fast forward on the chewing. HILARIOUS! Love your show. LOL. ang
Dry milk has a long shelf life past 5 years after bbd.
I’ve lost my smell . I am now concerned to eat any of my canned goods . My husband died last spring so I have no one to test my canned goods .😞
Camay soap, cut in little chunks makes excellent catfish bait. I forget which color is supposed to be best.
You need to be careful putting your nose so close to the jar, you need to hold it a little away from your nose and sniff, if it is bad you will smell it but there are some poisonous spores that can be inhaled through mucus membranes in the nose and make you very sick.
Thank you for showing the home canned food too. I always see 2 years recommended. So now I know that I can preserve my own.
yum! the bacon can be crisped up in a frying pan, if you like. Have a blessed day!
Ok, if there isn't a video tomorrow from Rudy we know what happened. 🤣
Yes sir AP ,spam is actually cooked in the can.👍👍👍 I like the bacon 🥓 flavor sliced thin and browned in a pan.... makes good SLT sandwiches
Morning
I love this video!
Good morning everybody. 😊
Patsmall have a great day 😊💐
Enjoyed the video. God Bless ❤
I believe you because I eat months ago clam Chowder soup which was 4 1/2 years expired then I eat can of tuna that’s bus almost 6 year expires those of us perfect nothing wrong with it because the jar was in good condition I believe you because I try myself
Try to avoid 'pull tops'- they tend to be a weak point..
🙏🏻💪🙏🏻
Never ever, ever had a problem with them. Ever.
@@zippy2641 - Me neither, but it's been brought to my attention that they may get slightly squished/crushed and cause a breach in the tops..
@@ShortbusMooner Rumor and old wive's tales. Nothing wrong with them.
@@zippy2641 - Yeeeaahh, no- I've had issues with cat food cans. It *is* a weak spot, comparatively speaking..
i opened a jar of bacon bits i canned in 2014. cooked it in a quiche last month. was still good. glad you spoke about the seal. my older jars still have a tight seal. i had to throw away many jars of the newer lids processed that came undone after months on the shelf! now i buy superb and tattler. those are good so far.
Was it store bought bacon bits or cut up bacon ? If store bought how did you do it ? Thanks !
I want to know how to store canned goods in interior Alaska and keep them from freezing in the winter aka remote cabin etc. thanks for the throw back to eating beyond the bbd!!!
I also write the date purchased but I also add the month. 1/24.
I do that on all food that I buy. Lets me know how old it is immediately for rotation.
I love low sodium SPAM with eggs and rice
The sausages I have just a few cans. They seem to be very expensive and you only get like 4 in a can. To me, I try to get whatever is more for less.
We need a video on fasting😂😂😂
I appreciate your informative videos. God bless you❤
I ate a 7 year old can of clam chowder last night. Consistency was a little off but tasted fine
Opened a can of spam, date 2010! It smelled good , so I ate a slice for breakfast,it was just like new!
Wow! Good to know, as I often wondered about electric canners like the Nesco. Thank you.
Last time I bought a cannof Yoders canned bacon, and this was years ago, was $25 bucks. That make for a lot of home canned shelf stable bacon.
Spot on...the powers that be..do as I say not as i do. Not falling for it!
Thanks for the taste test!! I’ve eaten chicken that was 5 yrs old with no issues.
I just checked the sausages. The cheapest place to get them is at World Market. $9.99.
great ideas, however, there is just so much salt in these items, and it's not a good option for those who have had kidney stones. Can you do an episode on items with low sodium? I would be so greatful.
I have spam , dak ham, chicken, tuna, beef and pulled pork, that some have dates older than 2019,just check the seal and do the smell test before you eat them!
Can you show us how you dud your canned bacon? My autistic grandson eats only bacon for breakfast . I am interested in stocking up for him
AP if you get sick after this, how will you know which one of these meats caused it?😊
I hav to say i hav good confidence in everything i hav pressure canned including Brent W.s bacon
Vienna sausage are good if they are cold
A lot of things the government has told us about Best Buy dates are so ring in my opinion. Even Kipling things in the Fridge.
I ate a canned ham from 2013 exp date this year
All American Spam, yes it's my Daddy's fav "meal" lol. My pantry is well stocked up for him❤. My smell/taste is off so I don't want to risk canning my own meats, so cans of chicken it is. Thanks for doing this taste test, we really appreciate YOU.
Thank you sir, appreciate your videos..
Have you ever tried,Sol-Mex sardines in tomato sauce with Chili's?😋
I was visiting family in Hawaii 2 years ago. The Spam was kept behind locked cases in Walmart! 😂
😋😋😋I have canned bacon and breakfast sausage too.👍😄
Been through this before, shrinkflation and higher prices, started buying the meat before 2020 expecting higher prices, really hate being right
Thank you for this very important video
i had some stew i made from 2018 pressure canned, and was perfect!
After I get all my solar done canned meat and seed will be priority.
