Thanks, my suggestions end up being ones grossely overlooked on reaction channels and for that reason very few make it through. Its very suprising this one has so few reactions considering how beloved by artists from all genres. As a young kid in the 70's this and
Jackie Blue stand out most.

Good call on the month flying by, Brad. I do recall when the marathon was introduced, Nick mentioned it could well extend a bit into April. So, there is a chance we've got some more "one hit wonders" left in the near future! I've also mentioned in a couple of posts, given the significant number of songs that have been suggested (along with the guys and viewers strong positive reactions to most of the choices), the guys consider possibly revisiting a "One Hit Wonders Marathon, Volume 2" type event say in the summer. If that's not feasible, maybe the guys could do a regular or semi-regular feature (perhaps a couple of times per month?) where they react to more "one hit wonders." Just some thoughts to hopefully keep the good times on the channel going! 😀

Ryan, metronome is what you were thinking, though actually woodblocks( they do sound similar)..What makes this version different is genuine heartfelt soul. He meant every word.

Great song that still sounds fresh more than 50 years later. Very lush guitar work as well. A pristine-sounding recording. It's the only version I've ever heard and probably the only rendition I need to hear. Elements of soul and a bit of country.
P.S. The instrument you are thinking of Ryan is a metronome, often used in teaching piano, but in this case I believe the instrument being used in the song is a hand-held wooden block being hit with a wooden stick.

It's underappreciated. This album, from the first track to the last, rocks. All these years later, I'm a metal guy, but this album is still in rotation. They put together a great backing band for Dobie. Most people just know Drift Away. Give the album a listen. It's a gem.
Mentor Williams is Paul Williams' brother, and Paul wrote many hits as well.

This is the most memorable version of this song. But the Uncle Kracker version sticks with me because of Dawson's Creek. (Iykyk). I did not think of this as a country song. Never heard that before you read it... Great song! To many this is the original! It is great to be well rounded in any area! But music does something to your heart no matter what mood you are in. Or affects us different depending on how we feel. 😊

Funny never heard that as a kid and only know it after looking into Dobie Gray. So many great black artists completely off my radar as a kid now my favorite. Curtis Mayfield, Sly Stone my top 2 .

Great catch, Fred. It appears that the other main guitar part/fill in the song was played by Troy Seals. Troy is a member of the extended family that produced Jim Seals of Seals and Crofts, along with Dan Seals from England Dan and John Ford Coley. Dan Seals would also transition into a country music star primarily in the 1980s. Troy Seals would become known as one of the most successful songwriters in Nashville with hits such as "Seven Spanish Angels" (made famous as a duet between legends Ray Charles and Willie Nelson). Seals would go on to be nominated for co-writing the Country Music Assocation Song of the Year on 3 different occasions. Ultimately, Troy Seals was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Woodblock is the instrument you're referencing during the breakdown part, Ryan. There can be one or several that are tuned to a note as Supertramp uses in "The Logical Song."
A woodblock (also spelled as two words, wood block) is a small slit drum made from a single piece of wood. The term generally signifies the Western orchestral instrument but may also refer to the Chinese woodblock.
The orchestral woodblock of the West is generally made from teak or another hardwood. The dimensions of this instrument vary, although it is either a rectangular or cylindrical block of wood with one or sometimes two longitudinal cavities. It is played by striking it with a stick, which produces a sharp crack. Alternatively, a rounder mallet, soft or hard, may be used, which produces a deeper-pitched and fuller "knocking" sound.
On a drum kit, a woodblock is traditionally mounted on a clamp fixed to the top of the rear rim of the bass drum.
Could also have been claves. But we’ll probably never know.
It's woodblocks. The clave is one trick pony with no defined note. Woodblocks can have different pitches and some drummers have the tri-block, which is used in Supertramp's "Logical Song." Thoughts from the "og's" Out of the thousands of times I've heard this song, not once did I think of this being "Country". Also though over 40 years I have yet to hear another version of this song, ever... (Probably glad of it....). True facts.......

Dobie's version may not be the original recording, but once he recorded it, it was his song from that point on. His version is widely regarded as _the_ version.
At least to us oldsters. I guess a lot of younger people like the Uncle Kracker version. I have no idea why. Dobie sings it like he means it. You believe every word he sings. And the music behind him is perfectly done. Uncle Kracker's version could be done by A.I. just as well.

I thought Kracker's version was good, especially since it featured Dobie. And Kracker sang it as true to Dobies version as he could, he didn't try to make it his own. Did you mean the parts where Dobie sings along and was a big part of the video, is that where you think A.I. could have kicked in? Dobie loved Kracker's version and it briefly brought his song back into prominence. Give it another listen. And im old school, probably older than you...

@@mspicer3262 I know what a metronome is. I know what a 1960s metronome sounds like. Metronomes are not musical instruments. I’ve been a professional drummer since then - with no other day job. Drumming and percussion are all I do for a living. This recording is the sound of either two different pitched (sized) wood blocks or two pairs of claves. It is not the sound of a metronome on this recording. In the late 60s all metronomes were mechanical. They have a distinct sound. This recording has a different sound. No one would record a metronome.
A metronome is a practice tool to help beginners learn to keep time.

No matter what happens, I want to thank the whole "502 Crew Universe" for the amazing support shown to my post on "What You Won't Do For Love." I'm tippin' my hat to you, user-lq4, for that AMAZING list of "saxy" songs you've compiled for Ryan (and Nick and Ty, too.) Well done! I was kicking around a similar idea regarding old-school r&b/soul numbers for Ryan, because he deserves better than the stuff he grew up with. I feel Ryan has "come into his own" a little more now, being it's just the two of them reacting, and I'd like to encourage his love of the genre. Happily, some of your choices would have been on my list, also. :)

I did use the opportunity to "slide" in a few personal favorites that I've suggested in past posts (but they do meet the criteria). 😉 Seriously, if you have songs that I've missed, please feel free to respond again with them. Like any other suggestion list that I may post, it's meant to be the foundation that anyone else that's interested can add important pieces to going forward.
I definitely agree with you about the work that both Ryan and Nick have put into the channel since Ty has no longer been able to appear regularly in videos. I tried to bring up when I congratulated the guys on going over 45,000 subscribers in a recent post what great on-camera chemistry that Nick and Ryan have developed in such a short period of time (even though I know they've been on the channel since the beginning and they knew each other before the channel. Yet, that doesn't guarantee it will easily transfer onto the camera and through the microphone). It seems like Nick and Ryan play off of each other better and better with each video. Of course, "the full 502 crew" isn't complete without Ty in his seat behind the microphone, but Nick and Ryan are definitely doing a terrific job. The channel is just as enjoyable and enlightening as it's always been and that's due to the hosts.
I had the same idea that you mentioned. I did create a couple of R&B/soul "starter" lists in the comments for the Dennis Edwards video from a couple of months ago because the guys really seemed to enjoy the song and they discussed in that video delving more into that genre in the future. If you have recommendations for that genre, it can't hurt to put them out there. While it's definitely the guys' decision as to what songs get videos, Nick seems to mention at the end of every video that the guys encourage viewers to comment, so that's "fair game" for song recommendations from viewers. 😀

My pleasure, Matt. I know you must have put a lot of thought, time, and effort into it. Even if Ryan just checks out some of those great songs on his own time, (as opposed to reacting to them on RUclips), it'll enrich him. That might sound rather hokey or "high falutin", but I believe music can have a magical effect on a person's well being, and Ryan seems really open to hearing more of the types of songs you've listed.
I got a kick out of your reference of Van Morrison's "Moondance" possibly causing a "two-alarm fire" for him, because not only does it have great sax, it's also got that tell-tall word "moon" in the title! (Well, he hasn't been wrong with his instincts, yet, lol.) And I agree that the on-screen chemistry between Nick and Ryan has taken a definite up-tick as of late, especially considering that dynamics always shift when one member leaves an established group, (even temporarily, like Ty), and things sometimes don't take a positive turn. Thankfully, that hasn't been the case here.
All three of the 502 hosts really seem to be considerate, down-to-earth, fun-loving guys that are great to know, so I think I can safely speak for all of us when I say that it's been very enjoyable watching them and assisting them on their musical journey thus far. Let's keep the music and the momentum going. 🎵

@@alchemy-oi8xf Thanks for the reply and additional kind words, Alchemy. Honestly, I'm receiving far too much credit for the list but I'm grateful for the positive thoughts. I know the guys have already had good experiences with a number of the artists and groups in previous videos (Chicago, Pink Floyd, Billy Joel, etc) that are on the list, so those were kind of "lay ups" in my view. I'd also really like to see the guys introduce groups like Blood, Sweat, and Tears, along with Earth, Wind, and Fire to the channel. It was easier to include them as horns (and saxaophones) are so prevalent in each group's music. I've been "banging the (proverbial) drum" in support of Stevie Wonder being introduced to the channel since I started posting a few months back. However, quite a few of Wonder's best and most successful work from what music critics seem to call his "classic" period of the early to mid 1970s many seem to include horns (and saxophones) in them.
I want to be transparent that I did a simple search on Google to find quite a few of the other songs on the list. As someone with a bit of a research background, the speed of having online search engines for non-academic work can make things a little time consuming in wading through all the available information but also highly rewarding to quickly get access to what is needed. So as much as I would like to take credit for "tirelessly" putting the list together, it was a much shorter period of time than one might think.
I do agree with you about the transformative power of music and its place in a person's well-being. I look at the comments that Nick made towards the end of the "Who Let The Dogs Out" video about how there was a nostalgic connection to the song for him because he and Ty owned the CD when they were kids. While many of us, myself included, might scoff at a song like "Who Let The Dogs Out" being anything more than a dance tune that some may find annoying, there are people out there (like Nick) that have more of a connection to it because of his life experiences. I know I have those songs from different points in my life and I imagine others do as well. I guess I'm just not as brave as the guys to be that open when it comes to something that may not be considered "cool" or well respected.
However, that point leads to your comments about how genuine the guys' approach and personalities seem to be on the videos. I mentioned in my "congratulations" post not long ago that one of the things that kept me coming back to the channel was the clear interest that the guys had in music. I brought up how some music reaction channel hosts aren't willing to make the effort, may not be capable of making it, or are only trying to do it to increase the public recognition and value of their "brand" through RUclips. To put it plainly, how many other down to earth music reaction channels are going to spend nearly 20 minutes in a video on Alannah Myles' "Black Velvet" or well over 15 minutes on a song from a group (Tycoon) that probably only a small number of people that visit and view the channel were familiar with before this marathon? To me, that's where the authenticity towards the music and trying to live up to the channel's "mission statement" are so prevalent. It may not be what drew to me to the channel, but it's definitely a reason why I keep returning.
The guys should always have the ability to pick the artists and music as it is their channel. Yet, there seems to be a huge "buy-in" from the viewers when it comes to them having a chance to recommend what they see as songs worthy for videos. Like I mentioned in a previous post (it may have been for Sanford-Townsend Band's "Smoke From A Distant Fire"), there always seems to be great moments where songs recommended by listeners get reviewed and you can literally see the proverbial "light bulb" turn on in the guys' heads. As I wrote in the other post, it's like giving the guys a musical "surprise gift" and getting the enjoyment from watching them "open" it in the video. Perhaps that's another true power of music that it can not only effect the person hearing a song for the first time, but someone who's heard the same song 100 times get a chance to expose someone else to it for the first time.
Thanks again for the reply and the unnecessary but very kind thoughts. This is a great channel and, to a large extent, a lot of like minded individuals regarding music. We may not like the same genres, artists/bands, or songs. However, what would be the fun in that if we all felt the same middling reaction to every song? That's the major power of the channel and of music. 😀😂

Why? I love the song. Also, in thinking of one hit wonders, I didn’t want to suggest anything highly commercial. Nothing wrong with popular tunes but I like endorsing acts/songs that are more left of center, if you will. And Ryan and Nick clearly don’t mind musical pivots.✌🏽

Congratulations on finally getting a video for your request, JGS. Like I wrote before, I was pulling for you and I'm glad "Filthy McNasty" will get a video for "Me & Mrs. Jones," two songs that were big hits in the 1970s. As I mentioned in a previous post, what I'm most impressed by "Drift Away's" success is that it charted twice inside the top #10 in America EXACTLY THIRTY YEARS APART (a top #5 for Dobie Gray in 1973 and slightly inside the top #10 for Uncle Kracker featuring Dobie Gray in 2003). Like I brought up before, it's even more interesting that the tune was released as a country song by an artist named Narvel Felts in the same year as Dobie Gray's version and Felts' version peaked inside the top #10 on the American country charts. In case anyone may wonder what the 1970s country version may sound like, the first link above is to Felts' version. In digging in on this song a little more, I found that (while, of course, the Uncle Kracker version was a cover and it may be argued that Narvel Felts' performance was also a cover) Dobie Gray's version was a COVER too.
It appears that two different musicians recorded and released the song in 1972. An artist named Mike Berry was technically the first to release the tune. Not long after, an artist named John Henry Kurtz released the song as well. The original version by Berry is the second link above, while the Kurtz version is the third link above. They both seem to sound different than the Gray version in separate ways, so anyone interested may want to take a listen to each.
As I like to do, I checked to see how often this song has been sampled and covered. It looks like there's been at least 4 samples (the first being by Marley Marl, Heavy D, and Biz Markie in the late 1980s and the most recent just being last year by Dustin Lynch featuring Jelly Roll). When not counting the Berry, Kurtz, Gray, Felts, and Kracker versions, it looks like the song has been documented as being covered just 3 other times (including by Mentor Williams
