  • Today, we're going to have a look at a very complicated, very nice, and ultimately, brutally flawed wristwatch: the Citizen Skyhawk AT.

Reminds me of the negative reviews at online stores where the person has expectations of a product that 99.9% of consumers already know isn't what that product was intended to do. Too bad. This is an amazing watch that does what it does absolutely amazingly. UTC is just that... don't expect it to do something else. You can display 3 timezones simultaneously with this watch and switch between two timezones with ease.

I have worn a variant of this watch every day for several years and I share the frustrations with the user interface that Nick details here. In addition, the watch has not been as robust as I would like. The paint on the outer ring of the slide rule is completely gone, and the mineral crystal is scratched and in need of replacement.

  • @GuideauxPelagos
    @GuideauxPelagos 6 лет назад +15

This was the first watch I bought in years (2nd hand). I replaced the bezels and had the mineral replaced for a sapphire crystal. I absolutely love it and still wear it quite often. The ideal travel watch as I also said myself a few videos ago. The slide rule bezel is fantastic as an instant currency converter...faster than any calculator. ;-)
The bracelet was not my thing, too busy but worse far too heavy...I have it on a nice brown leather strap and it really shines on that to. It also takes a lot of the weight of the watch and leather makes it sit better on the wrist imo.
Great watch... you can get this watch for around 350 usd nowadays.
There is also a sapphire version that looks exactly the same but comes in Titanium which goes for around 450 usd. I think this is the 3rd generation and from around 2009.
I agree the UTC should be a gmt dial. Interesting take on the seconds in the display...never thought of that...but of course the seconds are the same everywhere. Haha. Maybe one day there will be an update for it? I don't care though... I haven't experienced the flaws that much. I love this watch!

I'm literally buying this because I'm an airline pilot and I will use almost all of these features daily.
The radio control is the most important thing to me. When ATC gives me a time, it isn't 1427. Its 1427 and 1/4 or whatever.
The slide rule is fantastic for calculating fuel endurance, and being that I'm extremely familar with a slide rule, I'm quicker with that than my phone.
Multiple timezones are an absolute must.
UTC clock is perfect being that my schedules are issued in UTC.
This is going to be a fantastic buy.

I have the Skyhawk and I love the watch. It is an incredible watch that looks good and it is loaded with a lot of features. I must admit that I will never use all of them, but I have them if I ever will need it. It’s a very nice size watch that wears very well, and you should not complain about the size of the watch, if you went into the store and tried it on.

    RE: UTC (from Wikipedia):
"The official abbreviation for Coordinated Universal Time is UTC. This abbreviation arose from a desire by the International Telecommunication Union and the International Astronomical Union to use the same abbreviation in all languages. English speakers originally proposed CUT (for "coordinated universal time"), while French speakers proposed TUC (for "temps universel coordonné"). The compromise that emerged was UTC, which conforms to the pattern for the abbreviations of the variants of Universal Time (UT0, UT1, UT2, UT1R, etc.)"
    Hope this helps!

A delightfully informative and entertaining review. I've had mine 16 years, I think. The limitations are true, though I never really noticed some of them before. The slide rule is very useful, though I now need reading glasses. A clunky beast, its "NSFW", but not a problem for casual attire or settings. Auto adjust for DST is nice. All in, I still love it after all these years.

I ordered the new model a few days ago, should be here tomorrow. They've fixed pretty much all the physical stuff you complained about here, it's got a sapphire crystal, easier to access crown, a better bracelet with at least one micro-adjust hole, and most importantly to me a much cleaner and more legible dial. I'll try to get a video up once it comes, since there don't seem to be many around on the current generation.

I concur. I’ve had mine for 6 Years. I had no problems adjusting links to fit my wrist. Mine is Titanium and very Comfortable. I enjoy the Citizen. Automatically changes time zones to where you are. I was very impressed when I was California and then on to Hawaii the Skyhawk was a pleasure to have. Sturdy, Accurate, Comfortable met my needs. My nephew, a military Pilot and many of his associates love this timepiece. I have several Citizens, including a two tone Titanium and Gold World Timer, The Titanium Skyhawk, A dress Citizen EcoDrive which looks like a RADO, (which in Platinum sold for a fortune in the 70’s) and many others in my collection. I enjoy them all but the Skyhawk is a versatile world traveler that is accurate and Durable!

I have this watch and for me the dial is not too busy. I live and work in east Asia but much of the work we do is based on UTC time so I use that a lot. I also work in bunkers where there is no daylight and we can be in there for days on end and totally lose track of daytime and night time. Finally we have offices in the US, having accurate time at a glance in three time zones is essential for us.

They have one now with a sapphire crystal, that’s made from their tough titanium and it has a quick adjust titanium bracelet. The date issue is not solved in that model. Where the UTC is, they could show the day and date for your current time zone. Or, even better, they could make the left side digital window the same size as the the right window, giving them room to show the day and date for your time zone. Then you could keep the UTC as well.

I have one of the original versions of this great watch. Although I have a largish wrist I find it perfectly fits my wrist. In fact when I first got it I had to have one link removed.
Unfortunately, the person who took out the link didn't keep all the bits and so I can't have the link put back.
My watch is in titanium and for a watch of this complexity is pretty light. Unfortunately, it's not SUPER titanium, which hadn't been developed at that time and so it does pick up scratches.
You don't have to leave it on a window cill to keep the charge up.
Just wear it normally and provided you don't keep it permanently covered with a sleeve it will be just fine.
I have a few radio controlled watches and I find it amusing to see all the seconds hands go round (to the second in time) in sync together.
I get the impression you don't know much about time zones otherwise you wouldn't have made the comments about them.
World time or universal time is calculated from Greenwich in England and the reason for this is a whole technical and historic subject on its own.
The people who designed this watch are not 'stoopid'. They're far more intelligent than you or I and if they put a crystal glass on it then there's a good reason for that decision.
I lost count of the number of times you used the word 'stoopid (stupid)'
about various aspects of this watch.
I like to know how much charge is in
the capacitor. If you buy a used watch it's handy to know how much charge the capacitor can hold because they're very expensive to have replaced, for instance.
I think it's not the watch that's 'stoopid' but you!
Sorry if I am being rude or disrespectful, but your review was as well.
If you're going to review a watch of this complexity then get to know the subject first otherwise you get to look a complete arse.

Great review! I love your frankness! I have one of the original releases when it 1st launched in 2007. The dial and bezel on mine are black with orange details. It came on a black rubber strap (like a tyre tread) which I eventually swapped out for an orange silicone strap from Barton with black underside with a black buckle for detail. It makes the watch pop as it draws the eye to the orange details while the buckle echoes the black bezel rather than the stainless steel case. I agree the dial is too busy. As my eyes aged I find I can't see the details easily. However on the wrist (mine is 7 inches) it doesn't seem large. The hands are very legible and like you I look past the dial details. The crown on mine is knurled (like a Seiko King Samurai) which makes pulling it out easier.
However, if you want legibility with the whizzes and bangs of multiple time zones, dates relevant to each time zone, 80dB alarms, lightness on the wrist (titanium) and reliability then the Omega X-33 Skywalker is worth looking at. It's hugely expensive compared to the Citizen (and the Breitling) but it looks amazing (and much nicer than the Breitling), feels wonderful on the wrist being titanium and has enormous pedigree being designed and authorised for current astronaut use by the European Space Agency.

Fixed UTC dial means you can't make a mistake about whether it is UTC or another time zone. Otherwise you might set it to another time zone, forget it, and assume it was still on UTC.

tacticool kid Same here. I like my watches to have dial made up of multiple layers of tekst, taking on a different meaning and function dependant on the angle and rotation you hold your watch. It also MUST have two divers bezels, chronometer thats accurate to 1/100000 of a second, a seperate dial for a compass function, a fully functioning texas instruments graphic calculator built in, a gyroscope and binoculars. It also has to have a clock for every time zone on planet earth and must be operated by 48 buttons and 6 crowns. My minimal water resistance is 300 bar.

The reason for the UTC on the dial is as a pilots watch no matter where we fly to or from weather and all info is reported in UTC or Zulu time. That said it doesn’t matter where we are we can collect the info we need and know it’s accurate for when we get it. Further the “slide rule” is actually called an E6B flight computer which most general aviation pilots use whether we use a digital one or this very useful mechanical one.

    Nick:
Bought one of the most recent models of this watch. I fail to have the same issues. It has a sapphire crystal, I don't need to remove the watch to access other modes, etc. I will grant this watch is more complicated than others in my collection, but the degree it is presented to here is melodramatic.
It's not perfect. It is large, but even on my 6.5 inch wrists, it's quite wearable. My biggest issue is with the lugs: since they're basically integrated into the case, strap and bracelet options are limited.
I also feel comparing it to the Breitling was an odd choice. A better option balancing functionality, ease of use, cleaner user interface, size, and value would be something like a resin Casio G-Shock.
I'm sorry to say this review didn't serve me well. I listened to it, and it kept me from trying out the Skyhawks for a long time. I hope the future videos do better.

My Skyhawk (basic version, not the Blue Angels version - it looks similar, but the buttons are round, and it doesn't have the orange tabs on the bezel) was my first "real" watch. I got it on Ebay for around $200 sometime around 2005. I wore it every day, and I have a job where I work with my hands, so it got badly beat up. In 2007, there was a fault with the radio clock, so I sent it to Citizen who cleaned and repaired it for free, and then replaced the crystal (which was horribly scratched) for the price of the crystal. Fast forward to 2019, I started getting into watches. Turns out, I really love this watch the most. It is always accurate, and asks for nothing but a little sunlight from time to time. Now I need reading glasses to see or use the advanced features. I even found another one on Ebay (actually a blue angels - just like this one) that isn't nearly as beat up as mine, that I can wear if I feel I don't want to see the scratched face (I still work with my hands, so I'm likely to ruin any nice watch). As far as ruggedness, it's already proved itself in the last 16 years of abuse. The lume on this is excellent. It seems like no matter what time I wake at night, I can always see what time it is without any additional light. Before I was into watches, over the years, several people have noticed it, and talked to me about it, and talked to me about watches. I remember one guy showing me his Rolex (and how you could spot a fake), and then another guy showing me and telling me all about his Grand Seiko. I wished I had known more about watches then.

I have had a Citizen eco drive watch for 15 years and although it doesn't have AT it keeps accurate time. I was given the Red Arrows Skyhawk and love it. I don't find the pulling out of the crown an issue as described in the video but then I don't bite my nails and don't wear the watch tight on the wrist. While I understand about the date I don't have too much of an issue with it, and really unless you have the second location set for travelling several time zones then it isn't too much of an issue by day.

Just bought the non-blue angels version, titanium with sapphire crystal. Interesting that mine has the ability to adjust the bracelet as well as having a sapphire crystal. The blue angel edition is nice, but I do not like the extra writing on the dial. Also, the crown on mine has the ability to pull it out without having to access it from the bottom. I think maybe Citizen heard the complaints and came out with a new version. As far as the UTC I appreciate it because doing ham radio contacts most hams use the UTC time so that is actually a plus for me. As far as the other issues this gentleman has I can not speak on such as the different time zones and date being able to be viewed I don’t know. I will play around with it some more and see if they changed or upgraded that feature. Overall, I am extremely happy with this watch and is a nice replacement for my old first gen Casio Pro Trek. It is also my first Citizen watch and I would definitely recommend it to others. Thank you for the review sir!

Besides the fact that Citizen have gone a bit Casio in its "let´s print the whole manual in the watch face" trend, I´ve been there, the watch in my left, the manual in my right, wanting to cry "who the fuck have designed this piece of dumbness!?"

3 Years later, still going for a good price in the real world but it can be had on Ebay for around 259.00 with 10% off. Manufacture refurbished (Never worn)without manual or original box. I took note of the cons but this is not so much about the imperfections but rather tweaks to the original version with the addition of featuring the Blue Angles. I did also purchase the British limited addition version. Not sure what it is worth but it will become part of my collection. Mostly show but I appreciate the complexity of this style of watch. One bonus; if you were on Gilligan's Island for a spell you would have zero issues... ;) ..

Nick you're right on about the mineral crystal and the lack of microadjustment on the bracelet. That said, this being a pilot-style watch, it SCREAMS for a leather strap anyways. I wear mine on a wide leather Zulu and it's perfect - in fact, it also feels and looks like it wears a bit SMALLER on a leather strap, which is excellent again given the sheer size of the thing. Highly recommend a leather strap or leather Zulu for this monster. I will also say that the best version of this watch has got to be the older Skyhawk World Time A-T Titanium - the titanium case shaves several ounces off the weight of the watch and it's WAY easier to wear as a result.

I just bought a Blue Angel version due to this review. Mine looks a bit different, the seller told me this one has saphire crystal, how can I be sure ? Mine does not have WR ratings. The ring is black, no yellow markings on ring, only on the dial and blue angels motive on back side. The main dials contain a wide slit. JY8058-50L according to website its water resistant, strange its not shown on the case.

@ Nick Shabazz: You can easily change the timezone of the calendar to any time zone including your home town. 16:08 just pull the crown out twice when you are at the calendar mode. The seconds are there so that you can see them at night if you need to do so, just press the light button to illuminate the digital screen, you will be seeing your local seconds in the dark 16:33 .

You were in the radio receiving mode. basically it's trying to adjust the time. You enter this mode by press and hold the 4 o'clock pusher until a beep. I've had this watch running 7 years with all the bangs and drops and dings and it's just fine until this Jan when I dropped it for one last time and it stopped. in the mean time I got the planet ocean and waiting to send this back for repair. love this watch. the PO is 10 times the price so you really can't compare them lol.

Agree in the complexity bit in terms of high tech design, Citizen nailed it. First off, this is a true maintenance free watch. You never have to change the battery because it does not have one. It has a super capacitor. It also has the most advance power saving features on the planet. It will maintain the time for something like three months even with no light. Not to mention, extremely accurate time. I do agree the dial is busy and you definitely need the manual to set it.

    • @davidashton2361
      @davidashton2361 Год назад

I agree about the points of the skyhawks complexity and its maintenance free ability, but I disagree about the battery or capacitor not needing replacement.
I have a skyhawk in titanium which is now some 25 years old. Best watch, up to now, that I have ever had, but I recently had to have the capacitor replaced at a cost of £200.
Even then, when I got it back it wasn't showing a full charge so I sent it back as not satisfactory.
Upon receipt it works just fine.
It's an advertising scam to say that it doesn't need a battery because it does!

All the flaws you mention here arent a concern to me.im not a pilot and I dont travel to different time zones, although I dont use all the dial I like the look. What is important is this watch is tough and extremely accurate. I have another Citizen evo drive and they stay accurate with each other by seconds. Great watch

What's sad about all of the UX issues, except the need to pull out the crown, is that they could all be solved with different firmware. The crown could be fixed with just slightly different knurling to make it easier to grab (Omega did this with the second rev of the X33).
They could also have left off all of the advertising text underneath the left-hand LCD display and used that space to make that display larger.

Wow... I have the predecessor of this watch which has a lot of the same features but is quite a bit smaller. The old one has a adjustable bracelet with 3 positions and the mode can be changed without pulling the crown... So Citizen made the watch worse in about every aspect besides the fact that the new one is radio controlled. The mineral crystal is just as bad on the old one, mine is sadly quite scratched.

While there are a number of "Blue Angels" watches by Citizen (seven according to their own website), four of them have a sapphire crystal (JY8078-01L, JY8078-52L, AT8020-03L, and AT8020-54L), and the other three have a mineral crystal (BJ7006-56L, BJ7007-02L, and JY8031-56L). The one in this video (JY8078-52L) has a sapphire crystal.

I bought this watch today (Jan 9th, 2021) and it must be a newer version. It has a sapphire crystal (says on back of case), easy access crown while wearing (much bigger non tapered crown, and maybe less crown guard), less writing on the face (bottom left corner), and now has an adjustmnet hole in the bracelet strap (one extra hole, tool needed). Also, I can set the calender to any time zone including my home. Maybe Citizen saw your video, cause that covers all "The Ugly". It was on sale for 30% off at a shop in the mall. Model number JY8078-52L in Canada.

thx for the review. I bought a newer version of the Skyhawk and I love it. They make a snowbirds edition of the Skyhawk now and it was the clincer for me since I'm Canadian ....plus the blue, red and white color way is fantastic and fun.
It now comes with some adjustability in the bracelet and a sapphire crystal but still the weird user interface. I make it work or me but I do find the UTC dail kind of worthless. Still I'm having fun with it and got it on a nice sale so thtas all that matters. 😅😅
Note the 2 position clasp I found still not to be great but I put a six position clasp from Aliexpress and its great npw. 10 bucks and a few minutes using a fine file to knock some burs of it (I guess I should have expected that for the price😑) but I got big wrists so every watch ends up being a project somehow.

  • @KingOfBanks

This watch is highly customised for pilot's practical use. Breifings, weather and planing is presented in UTC, so in that regard a fixed UTC hand makes sense, if it were not for the fact that UTC is only a 24 hour presentation, making a 12 hour hand silly. The mode changes are ridiculous. Nice review.

    • @blindriv3r
      @blindriv3r 3 года назад

yes it must, my G Shock 5600 .will pick up the Colorado signal on the east coast US, but i do have to hang the watch up in the window, facing the right direction to reliably get that to hit at midnight every night...on nights with very heavy weather fronts in the way of the signal, it may take til the 1:00 or even 2:00 am attempt to work, but it still does. I am in an apt building, with the window facing direction not ideal for a signal from Colorado, for someone with a better direction it will probably work by just leaving the watch on a dresser, etc
