And yet there is no studio recording at any time in her career that actually captures the huge power of the voice. The last note really is stupendous, but was much more so, and much more in the 'foreground' of the orchestra in a live theatre. It was because in the huge Met or at Covent Garden she usually held the head high, straightened the neck and "threw" her voice to the back row of the gods. In a studio, she was forced to restrain the beast or she would drown all else. It's a pity that the true greatness of the voice when heard live and 'rattling' the eardrums in an opera theatre could not ever be captured on recordings. If you had ever heard the lady sing live, you would not gush at these recordings. They are but an 'aide memoire' of the real thing on the night.
It seems like each soprano from the past specializes in a voice feature : callas is the master of chest notes , caballe is the master of piannisimo and sutherland is the master of trills .
Fantastic recording. She sounds sooooo different here from her 1961 recording, and her diction's so much better too. Does anyone know where I can download this song without having to buy the whole album?
A year after this I saw her in Lucia, my first opera! Before this, coloraturas had small voices. Sutherland's was huge. I saw her later in concert and Die Fledermaus with Sills.
MUSICA DEL OLIMPO..................................DE FARAONES............CALIFAS........Y EMPERADORES................COMO SUS JARDINES Y PALACIOS..........COMO LO SPODERES Y MISTICISMOS CHINOS.........TODA UNA ORGIA DE COLOR VOCAL...............IMPRESIONANTE.Y GRATIFICANTE PARA EL ALMA..............VIVA EL ARTE....Y LAS CUALIDADES HUMANAS...COMO ESTA DE CANTAR......TODO UN UNIVERSO DE BELLEZA.....COMO DEMUESTRA ESTA VOZ DE JOAN SUTHERLAND
by the way... she sounds SO soft on the low notes, i was only sure it was her when she got to the high ones... that surgery really changed her voice...
@ChrisStockslager Oh, buy the whole album. Everything on it is this divine. Decca's Sutherland "Grandi voci" CD shouldn't cost more than a couple dollars; it includes the 1959 LP, two Art of the Prima donna excerpts and the 1963 Santo di patria.
I think the 1961 recording is better and has more character. Yes, this is brighter and the diction is better. But the incredible melancholy she infuses into the voice a few years later defined her sound. This just sounds like a slightly more powerful Galli-Curci. Pretty, but nothing unusual (beyond perfection) until the last note.
vdarte unsteadiness. Haha. She had one year when she dealt with menopause. There was never unsteadiness even into her 60s. You might be talking about someone else.
@gustopheles she had a sinus operation to remove some sort of excess mucus, I believe. After that her voice began to sound darker and darker, which some people link to the procedure, as, I admit, I did.
Then go to a Callas video and tell them how you feel. This is a Sutherland video. Don’t just show up to spread your obviously unpopular opinion. Buh by.
perfect diction, crystal clear and shimmering gold-like coloruatura, brilliant voice
vocally the best Lucia
AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL
The whole thing is stunning, but the fluid run up to a dazzling high C ( 2:22 to 2:25 ) is supernatural. Thanks very much for the post.
I first bought this on audio cassette and it set me well on the road to buying just about everything else she'd done.
divina.
I think that's her best recording I've ever listened to (especially in terms of technique)

Astonishing!
Magnifiquement chanté, merci pour le post ...

La adoro en la primer foto... bellisima
Lei era LUCIA... Meravigliosa

Aren't we so lucky to have the gifts of the, to steal from Donizetti, 'Three Queens' on recording for all time?

Ale SC you could be right!
I always think the conductor's name is worth mentioning too. The conductor also matters.
Nello Santi
@@YortOK 😂✅ ..... LOL. Yes, I know. That's my point, innit? 😆
SU IMPOSICION VOCAL...........ES BRUTAL...............................APLASTANTE.....................EL EVEREST..................
Nello Santi^^ andyes, she was very fresh when she recorded this!

Otherworldly.

@tneprescintr Thanks for the info, I had no idea
🎉
@tneprescintr surgery? she had an operation to change her voice?
@gustopheles no problem
@gustopheles she had a sinus operation to remove some sort of excess mucus, I believe. After that her voice began to sound darker and darker, which some people link to the procedure, as, I admit, I did.
who's conducting?
Nello Santi who's thankfully still with us and active as a conductor.
Esta chica prometía. Pelín hortera, pero ahí están la voz y la técnica vocal. ¿Por qué se torció tanto?
Far far better than Callas.. Priceless
In my opinion Callas is much better.
Westin Taylor INDEED & Callas had an incredible repertoire. That's why they called her a La Divina. Hello Arnold Bourbon Amaral
Obviously. :-)
Nobody is better than La Divina.
Then go to a Callas video and tell them how you feel. This is a Sutherland video. Don’t just show up to spread your obviously unpopular opinion. Buh by.
So silvery sounding
Una voce bellissima ,ma da coloritura ....
Still prefer Maria without her these Bel Canto operas would never have happened.

I'm italian: her pronunciation is horrible. But, IMHO, the best Lucia with Deutkeom.
how do you find callas' pronunciation in this aria? in her 1953 recording
