Moss Poles & Monstera deliciosa - How to Use them (2023)

- Something that has been flooding the plant world in the last 18 months is using Moss Poles as a support mechanism for various houseplants. The idea behind the moss pole is to provide your climbing houseplants something to climb up.
Monstera deliciosa is one of the most popular indoor plants that can be successfully grown using a moss pole. Other favorites include Philodendron Pink Princess, Peru Monstera, Min Monstera, and tons of other Aroids.
These plants naturally climb in the wild and by giving them something to climb up you are giving them an environment more closely related to what they want, and as such they will often produce larger leaves in the process.
I have used both bamboo stakes and moss poles with Monstera deliciosa and have concluded that I prefer to use the Moss Pole because it creates a cleaner appearance in the home.

Thank you for this, I’ve never been able to figure out how to do this properly. I always feel like I’m traumatizing the plant! also you have excellent vibes, immediate subscribe. 🤙🏻
Awww thank youuu
Helpful..thank you! I have to ask, do you do mosaics as well? Love the pot and desk as much as the beautiful plant! 😊
FYI, with the setup shown in the video, all the tension of the string is concentrated at one spot on each petiole/stem - over time it might cut into the plant. Wider garden velcro would help spread out the force. Or multiple loops around each petiole/stem that is being re-positioned.
thats a great point. im about to go inspect my plant to see how it is faring. thanks.
how many loops?
@@distortedaydream three or four should do the trick
I like to use the green plastic, non sticky, “tape” so I can spread the pressure on the branches out and prevent digging into the flesh.
Great video, thank you! I am about to tackle this for the first time ever. I just found your channel and am going to check out your other videos.
Awesome! I hope you found it helpful! I have tons of videos so hopefully you’ll find more than resonate
I love how much you emphasize to wrap around pool first then monstera because I think that was my biggest issue that kept leading to failure, can’t wait to try your way and see how it goes!
yes!! try it, i think it'll work for you
Beautiful. About to try this for the first time. Thanks
nice! its very rewarding. looks so nice afterwards
Your monstera looks so good! I love all your videos! You are such passionate gardener and I can feel your love and care for your plants! All the best! :-)
Awww thank you for watching!
This is exactly the info I needed. I made a moss pole that looks a lot like the one in the video, but I have not had any success in 'getting her on the pole' because I for sure thought it was going to hurt her stems. About to reinstall it off-center and twine her to it. New sub for sure 👍
Sweeeeet I’m glad the video was helpful!
Hello from the mountains of Arizona! Totally earned my subscription my friend! Cant wait to watch more of your videos! -Nick 😃👍
Hi!! thank you for joining the plant vibes!!
@@plantvibrations YEAH!! Love learning about plants! Do you have a how to make a moss pole video?
Thank you for this tutorial, your energy is immaculate!!
You are so welcome!
Thank you for this video!! Very well explained!! Good work 🌿♥️🙏🏼
im happy to hear it was helpful!
You remind me of a young Leo DiCaprio lol. Thanks for the great tips! I never thought about wrapping around the pole first. So much better!
Haha I’ll take that! And yes wrapping the pole provides such improved support!
Thank you! This helped me get my monstera looking fantastic!
Niiiice!
Thank you for your help!
You're welcome!
Looks soooo good in that corner!♥️
thank you!!! its been growing sooooo well
Great info! Exactly what I was looking for. I have a beautiful small monstera plant that is rapidly growing. It has 3 fenestrated leaves and just pushed out the biggest one yet. I have an 18 in moss pole for her that I got on etsy.
Glad it was helpful!
Nice video. If you have a local garden shop 'boutique' that sells monstera, they most likely sell moss poles. My local shop makes their own. I was told that some people like to spray the moss with water because the moisture encourages the plant to grow tall (up the pole).
Great tip!
hi! I have a 16 year old monstera my parents gave me and am about to start this process, stoked! I have some regular kitchen twine, can I use that or do I need something special? p.s. love all the nature sounds in this video, so calming.
Omg what an heirloom! You can definitely use kitchen twine as long as it’s thick and won’t cut into the stems over time
That looks awesome 👏🏻 you did a great job👍🏻 ⭐️
Thank you 🤗
love the tips, and your monstera is beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
I REALLY need to buy, or make, my moss poles with that netting around it. It looks so much cleaner and easier to work with! Without it, they shed the moss EVERYWHERE! ( especially if you don't keep it moist enough😬😁) It also seems like it would be easier to attach an extension to it if you needed to! Yours looks great!
You can fill your "Moss Pole" with Spanish Moss... works just as well ;:)
haha yeah im getting close to needing an extension, its true! i also find that simply the dowel rod is a pretty good alternative without moss. as of yet ive had no roots take hold in the moss.
I'm loving your vibes man !!! Plant on !! ~ a new sub :)
Thanks for joining!!
Thank you!
🙂
Great job, about to do mine, thank you for a cool video!
Have fun!!
Gorgeous
thank you :)
This video was really helpful, thank you so much!
Awesome!!
Thank you!!!
Hi Devon. I love your first timer, gentleness in teaching. You're spectrum friendly. May I use a tree branch that has alot of techture??instead
Thanks for your kind words :) yes you absolutely can, just be aware that after a few seasons it may begin to rot and lose its ability to maintain the plant. rot won't cause any damage, you'll just need to change out for a new branch
Great informative video. Thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Thank you exactly what I needed to know
Glad it helped
Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Great video. My monsters has 7 stems and I am confused how to tie it up lol

I'm afraid to use that sting technique incase it cuts through plant. 😔 Even with your great instructions on how to do it.
Btw, do you have a video on how to make your own moss stick on the cheap?
Thanks a bunch!
I switched to using floral tape instead of string for that reason! And yep : How to Make a Moss Pole for Climbing Plants like Monstera DIY - Easy, Cheap, Fast! (2023)

This helped a lot, thanks!
Glad to hear it!
Do you secure the moss poll to the pot with something, so it doesn't move and wobble under the plant weight and cause the whole plant to fall on the side?
once you water the plant in and it starts to build some roots it helps stabilize the pole. ive never had any issues with any of my poles falling
How so I insert tje moss pole to a grown plant without damaging the roots? Or do I have to repot it?
I wouldn’t worry about damaging the roots, monstera will quickly recover
How do you have multiple main stems? How would I achieve that?
If you only have one, consider planting a propagation in the pot to create a second. It all depends on what you start with.
Excellent! Thanks so much!
Thanks for watching!
How do you keep the weight of the plant from pulling the Moss pole over sideways? That's what always happens to me.
Perhaps you need a deeper pot. The pole should be pushed down to bottom of the pot
Nice veranda, I bet plants like that space too
Thank you!!
Do you have a video on how you built and ‘planted’ the moss pole in the pot? Thanks!
Unfortunately I don’t! I need to make one though
Hello, if using twist tie instead of string would you still recommend doing a full wrap around the pole first?
I’d actually recommend using green floral tape. It’s cheap and more effective
@@plantvibrations oh okay! My moss pole came with a type of twist tie/wire thing but I will look into to that instead!
Love your pot, where'd you get it?
My mom made it :)
@@plantvibrations amazing! Is she on Etsy?
Hi! My monstera has grown wild and I have tried to stake it with a store bought moss pole, how did you make yours? And how should I go about trying to stake it so it grows up. I need help lol

Check out this video!
Thanks so much for this video! I’ve had a moss pole on with my monstera for a while but was confused as to why the aerial roots weren’t attaching until a friend told me they need to be tied!
I noticed your plant doesn’t have many aerial roots, should I prune mine off? I have some longggg ones
If they’re getting ugly you can definitely prune them off and it won’t be a problem at all for your plant!
Noo, don't prune them, you can put them in a glas of water, and they are going to help your monstera grow more big leaves faster. :)
Rooted aerials greatly contribute to foliage size. There are consequences to removing them.
I saw someone wrap their aerials in moss and Saran wrap to keep it damp, but you have to leave the tip out in the air. I tried it with a small one minus the saran wrap; just a long strand of moss and I mist it. It looks really cool!
So where did you find a moss pole. Don’t believe I’ve ever seen one for sale. I would think the string would cut into your plant. I would use a small rectangle piece of leather with holes on each end and tie the string in the holes to the pole. Give the plant more of a surface area where the string couldn’t cut into the stalk.
I found it at a local nursery actually. And it’s true if you don’t move the string around it can eventually cut into the stems. I have started opting for tape lately. But I love you method!
Try narrow strips of velcro it works perfectly
String looks a little thin and could cut into the stems? I would always use twine.
You are right. I need to make an update video, I switched to tape
Thank you! Gonna try this cuz my Monstera beauty is getting out of control laterally . Also, what state are you in? Such space! San Diego doesn’t have patios like that unless you got millions! Lol
Heheh I know what you mean! I’m in Pennsylvania
PA girl here just got my first Monstera. Now I need a miss pole! Love your vibe!
Your monstera is gorgeous! Can you remove the strings eventually?
Where is a good place to buy a moss pole? I’ve looked at Home Depot and they don’t have any that look like yours
I have a video I’m editing right now showing how to make them. With links to where to buy the materials! It’s very easy to do
Hmmm interesting, never tried a moss pole. I’m totally gonna swap my bamboo and test this out!
for large plants like this i find it to work really well!
Since the Moss Pole should be moist, what's your advice for wetting it, INDOORS? I've been spritzing it, but there must be a better way. I have a small starter pole. Not like yours.
I’ve given up on trying to keep them moist. The aerial roots will still grow into them. I wouldn’t worry about that
You can always use watering globes. I’ve started using a plastic cup with 2 holes in the bottom and I keep it on top of the moss pole and just add water every couple days. You can also take the plants and put them in the shower. Helps with pest control also.
Hahaha Deff need 7 hands to do this 😂
hahaha truuuth
String will cut the plant
Switched to floral tape
You can't put baby in the corner!!!
Why not??
@@plantvibrations it's from Dirty Dancing.😉
So you basically showed us how to tie it to a stick. For aesthetic purposes?? What is the purpose of the moss stick? Why not just use any stick? This didn’t explain much.
My apologies, I thought I clarified the reason why moss poles are used . and yes, the moss aspect is essentially just for aesthetic. You can absolutely use any stick that can provide stability and support. I never use moss after realizing it’s just a fad, I always use simple dowel rods instead
@@plantvibrations why are dowel rods better? Does the plant grow upright on them on its own?
@@louisheath2791 no, naturally in the wild monsteras “climb” up trees. Their aerial roots wrap around and help them climb.
I'm so confused... why are you using a moss pole just to display the foliage? A steak of any kind would have worked and cheaper. Moss poles are meant to be an "extension" of your pot, giving climbing plants like airroids something to root into and grow up and produce bigger leaves.
Monsteras are climbers. Attracted to wet tree trunks.
Ok!
