  • In this new landscape photography video, I try the 400mm challenge with Nigel Dansen, Mads Peter Iversen, and Darren Spoonley. We are restricted to capturing images at 400mm and only have 1 hour to take the photos. To make things even more difficult, we were photographing on a super windy day with midday light. In the vlog, I share various photography tips & techniques and a huge learning experience I had while filming this challenge. I really hope you enjoy the video!

Oh man! If I had just found the perspective you were at when that big wave crashed! It would have been better than what I got :D - Beautiful close-ups as always man, I never doubted you'd manage to capture something magical! I especially love the last breaking wave photo!

You’re way too hard on yourself! Honestly the ones towards the middle and end are my favorites.
My initial images I don’t normally like. I find when you’re against the clock the first images are just to get you into the flow. Most of my compositions don’t feel thought through until maybe 15-20 minutes in where I’m getting more ideas based on the landscape, the conditions, and my focal ranges.
I’m just stoked for the Shainblum content!

Absolutely love the Upside-down Waves. Not that I can compare in skill, but I tend to rotate abstract scenes around to get ultra unique shots, as well, and was happy to see that one work so well. First time viewer/subscriber. Also (don't tell my longtime favorites Nigel and Mads I said this) 3 of your pictures won 1st for me. @10:44, the bird and the wave with the turquoise.

Hi Michael, great to see you in Ireland, adapting to the conditions. Wow, the composition of that last photo of the big wave with the turquoise and orange was really special. I tend to travel light with a 24-105 and 70-200 on a Canon 6D, and cannot justify getting a longer telephoto, but you and your colleagues have demonstrated just how powerful such a focal length can be.

Nigel's wave shots are all really pretty and worth hanging up on the wall. His rainbow versions - according to my thinking - did not quite come off. I do not know why. I cannot put my finger on it.
Of course, Mads with his dramatic silhouette stole the whole show. But that was cheating. He combined two pictures to make one. That must be against the rules so he must definitely be disqualified! 😃
I think best of all was Michael's turquoise wave or maybe his bird wave.
Yes, the time limit was a mistake and completely against Nigel's apple policy. Not everybody is a sports photographer.

This was really fun - you guys should do more like this. After watching all 4 of the videos I have to judge the challenge like this 1 = Mads 2 = Darren 3 = Michael 4 = Nigel although it was really close all round. The human interest and compression Mads added was the most unique and so it really stood out for me.

The shots at 10:33 and 12:31 are my favourites. Think you won the challenge hands down. Lets face it Mads cheated using two photo in one 😂

The light in that wave image reminds me of the eye. When you have light coming in and through, how it lights up the iris. That is just an amazing shot.

Harsh condition but still managed to get some great photos! Not your best shots but still beat them easily in my opinion. They are just not on the same level.
