I live on an island in Washington State where this would be extremely helpful to everyone here. It would lower the cost of everything for everyone, and thus the economy would boom.
It is called a WISP, not a mesh. I own and run a WISP business. It is called AP's not nodes. Then each client has a CPE to get the internet. They are installing Ubiquiti equipment. Same as what we use in our systems.
This is not a solution… it‘s a workaround. Regulation is needed to make the ISPs provide proper service. New York is so densely populated that it‘s unbelievable that it shouldn’t be possible to provide proper internet service at a decent price. 🤷♂️
20$ for around a 50Mbps connection that will have reliability issues in bad weather, as it's based on a wireless infrastructure, feels like a bad deal.
How do you know it will not perform in bad weather? I do not see it changing much. Starlink works in snow and rain, so wh should not this local net do?
My children and I never went online until 2018 me on my phone I shared with my partner.and the kids really missed out on the benefits you have with every book at your fingertips with a crowd of others to collaborate .I am still spellbound .I use it to learn.I spoke with my family for the first time in ten or more years .I now feel like everyone knows more than me .But watch out !I will get there.
This is awesome. I built a free wireless network around rural Lake Wyola in Shutesbury, MA in the late 90's. There was only crappy dialup at the time. Got a T-1 at the closest, highest house I could and beamed it 1.5 miles to the far side of the lake, then distributed it to homes around the lake. We covered a few hundred houses in wifi - all with donations and volunteer effort. Currently my town, Northampton, MA is about to build a municipal fiber network allowing providers to compete for our business while we own the last mile. It's the ultimate solution - I proposed fiber-to-the-neighborhood along with wifi to bridge the last few hundred feet but was won over by having a separate fiber to each residence - once done it is future-proof.
I wonder how this will compare with Starlink, which should be available everyone pretty soon. Hopefully this can just drive down prices even further. Rolling out cheap internet widely is one of the most important opportunities. Everyone needs reliable and fast internet access.
Starlink is $99/mo for average speed. It's a theoretical project that never should've left the ground with our non-existence extraplanetary infrastructure. Even at $99/mo they will struggle to become profitable, and probably abandon the project before they recoup the investments. Especially now that 5G is rolled out... and Starlink was only borderline viable when compared to the stupidly low range of 5G.
Starlink is pretty expensive and can only connect to a low amount of people. It won't bring down costs, only provide fast internet to people that can afford the high price and make earth-based astrometry more difficult. I hope that the engineers make sure that these satellites won't collide with other ones, because if they do they could cause a Kesler syndrome preventing us to go to space for a long time.
@@shashi_ it won't. Launching 42 000 satellites every 5 years would cost 4 billion$/year with each satellite being able to service around 1 000 people. So with 2/3 of the satellites over the ocean at any given time that gives you 14 Million potential customers. Assuming you can get that many customers you would need to charge around 300$/year just to break even. And that's only in the ideal case where everyone around the world can afford Starlink and the customers are spread out evenly across the globe. A more realistic amount of customers would lead to a 900$/year price just to break even, which is pretty close to the current price of around 1200$/year.
I get the impression that they will only be available in underserved areas (rural). If they don't SpaceX will be cannibalising on sales of satellite launches or getting themselves into regulatory issues in countries where telecom monopolies have great influence on regulators. They can basically only go where big players don't want to go. Knowing Elon's ability to get funding from states (nation-states) this might be their aim, subsidised connections and highly specialised connections (e.g. ships). On price, it isn't that bad, in vast parts of the world you are getting 2, 5 or 10mbps at prices around half of what Starlink is offering. So proportionally it isn't that bad.
I have heard of a similar set up in Oregon, it's been a few years but I'm glad it's growing. I felt that we would move in this internet direction. This networking can also help add stability on a wider range

I suspect they use end-user access points without regard of the terms of service. Perhaps they have a way to get around it by swopping out the primary connection enough so that ISPs basically will need to play wack-a-mole. I can see this being workable in a high density area like NYC but when your primary access points are limited the ISPs will catch-on quick and throttle, shape or suspend service.

Communications towers & most infrastructure is a public utility provided by the government over the decades and is supposed to be open, public, & free. But the average person doesn’t think about how things work.
Let's get something clear here, in Houston in the suburbs (we're internet is more expensive to deploy) 1GB fiber is $40 a month, in NYC you keep wanting to tax corporations you don't understand they just roll all those taxes right to the consumer and that's the only reason internet is expensive.
Not just NYC. You might mention Chattanooga TN which took on cable companies to get one of the fastest in the world fiber optic multiple GB speeds with a municipal utility and was sued by them and won.
How can I start this in a developing Country, a region like Africa... Specifically, DR Congo... in the village, where connectivity is vastly lacking...??
In Australia, the Tax Payer paid for the Internet Infrastructure for Private Providers to charge you more than the rest of the world pay, and make Billions in Private Profit off what the Tax Payer paid for !
She missed the opportunity to say it rhymes with rectum and starts with S like stinky. On a serious note, what is stopping these providers from suing this out of existence, like the community / city broadband movement a decade back. I don't remember the exact city but the lawsuits were so expensive that the city decided to settle, with the city being limited to only existing connections. If anything, the providers can pressure the super-node provider to not provide the final connection to the internet. What's stopping that from happening?
@@Vaguetadpole I think all the mini nodes do eventually connect to the mother node to access the internet. I think from the piece they're saying it's a fiber connection. My point is that this specific provider can get pressure to disconnect them once the incumbents feel like their bottom line is affected. I wouldn't get past them to pay this fiber provider for their effort to cut them off.

Wow!👍We need more like them!♥️
This is fantastic! Sometimes it takes a community. Bravo!
I'm impressed with the volunteers - they are what make this happen. I'm surprised the equipment isn't getting stolen though at it is NYC.
Amazing initiative!! Kudos to all the members and volunteers 👍
20$ for around a 50Mbps connection that will have reliability issues in bad weather, as it's based on a wireless infrastructure, feels like a bad deal.
The thing is you don't need to pay monthly.
How do you know it will not perform in bad weather? I do not see it changing much. Starlink works in snow and rain, so wh should not this local net do?
Cheaper and better speeds with all the crap
Absolutely beautiful! ❤️
That was done in Romania long long time ago and brought down the cost from 45+ USD to as little as 5
My children and I never went online until 2018 me on my phone I shared with my partner.and the kids really missed out on the benefits you have with every book at your fingertips with a crowd of others to collaborate .I am still spellbound .I use it to learn.I spoke with my family for the first time in ten or more years .I now feel like everyone knows more than me .But watch out !I will get there.
This is totally sick.
I wonder how this will compare with Starlink, which should be available everyone pretty soon. Hopefully this can just drive down prices even further. Rolling out cheap internet widely is one of the most important opportunities. Everyone needs reliable and fast internet access.
Isn't starlink hot garbage/vaporware?
Great job yall! This is such an important effort
I have heard of a similar set up in Oregon, it's been a few years but I'm glad it's growing. I felt that we would move in this internet direction. This networking can also help add stability on a wider range
I I knew this should happen but I'm not equipped to always convey my ideas and of course life gets in the way,I feel very impressed by the idea that you knew how to implement the dish idea get them built etc,Scratching my head on that one!But a child or adult without access is at a disadvantage. I still haven't sent an email so I should know! I moved to England when they only had one phone company!!!!Please continue your work it might be the difference between life and death in future lives ,Knowledge is power👍

Wow, we need more people like this. Greed, share holder profits, paying lower end workers a non-living age - all the things big greedy companies do while they claim their mere presence is good for the economy. These people are taking this "infrastructure" fight out of the hands of our dysfunctional government.
In Rome you pay not in base of your zone! It's like discrimination 😳
This is amazing. These people are heroes. Very inspiring video
This is amazing. Also the kinda community organization the big guys try to stop. Best of luck to them. I’m down to donate and I don’t even live there. !!! No more companies only communities !!!
Excellent idea fanning solution outside of the problem .
Awesome!!!! Los Angeles needs this!!!!
“Why don’t more people know about this?” Because it sucks.
Why? How?
How can I bring this to my community?
How do they strike deals with T2 and T1 backbone networks? 🤔
That’s where state intervention could come in handy: to force internet providers to offer quality services.
Great job guys , I live in South Africa and we are facing the same problem if not worse because we have one of the highest data prices in the world. I wish there could be such initiative here I would gladly volunteer
I've seen this before but it was a Ghanaian gentleman who was doing it but it had all wires extending across the whole village same idea same effect
#freethink . I want to help and support this NYC Mesh Finacial
Danm I feel bad for people. Me sitting here thinking my 1 gig aint enough. 😂
They should study how Romania did it. We built organic neighborhood networks and united them to have the best internet in Europe
What is the name of the company behind it? Want to learn more about them
Could you please share with us links or more info on this? ☺️
@@jaxd7206 sorry but my comments are deleted once I post any links or titles to sources. There's no way to put this info in a youtube comment it seems.
@@Gilotopia oof that's really awful 😞
Thank you for taking the time to cite the sources. I'll be sure to look up how it was done in Romania when possible.🌷
There's some interesting info on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_in_Romania
Omg. I have Spectrum and it sucks ass. I wish we had Mesh in Connecticut.
That’s what Cuba does. Bravo!
Now the big companies will threaten/offer them to raise price or sell their business.
Excellent! Decentralized & user owned. But won't server/data storage hubs be necessary in the end?
This just moves traffic, so no need for data storage.
I hope Mesh gets control of fiber at some point.
And it’s very sad, that 100 bucks don’t get you reliable internet in a rich city like nyc. My country has a provider who offers 10Gbit if you have a fiber port in your house for 40 bucks a month. Or most other providers give you 1Gbit for 80 bucks if you only have older coax.
Videos like this make me feel glad I'm in India and not in the USA. I get 3TB bandwidth with 40mbps speed for 8$/month here.
Which Indian city do you live in? What's it like in the countryside?
What !!!
@@jaimepuig2258 I live in Chennai, but the data cost is about the same all across India, countryside you might not get a fiber connection but decent mobile data is available everywhere, you can get 20-30mbps speed, 2.5GB/day data cap for 28days for 4.65$/month, with unlimited free calls and amazon prime membership for 28days.
Spectrum and Optimum are so incredibly terrible, from shady charges, terrible service, and rude techs, the only reason they continue to thrive is because of monopoly. Makes me sick.
Unfortunately that sounds like a nightmare for malware
Very interesting idea indeed though I would be a little concerned about hacks and attacks on the system.
Yesss, I've been hoping to do same thing here in my home country (GH) .
Need to be able to utilize the free bandwidth from CB and other sources and make the internet run off those bandwidths so everyone can have internet. Not sure why no one has used those bandwidths. If they can transmit over wifi they can transmit over CB bandwidths.
I wish this team all the best. This is a very good thing they are doing and I hope it catches on.
NICE ! 👍👍👍👍
This is creating a new system in order to have a better world. The people agreeing and working on things for their mutual benefits. This is what those who control the system do not want.
How good to see Great awesome social guys n gals out there.
in our country it's literrally illegal to create such network, unless your company(needs to be a company) some shared are owned by government... it's just sad...
Communications towers & most infrastructure is a public utility provided by the government over the decades and is supposed to be open, public, & free. But the average person doesn’t think about how things work.
They are just doing their best
Great work man I appreciate
Now this is the kind of future I'm excited about. Really cool!
Awesome!
I really do love the mesh idea. I’d have to do more research on it, but it definitely makes sense when you’re looking at a decentralized network.
Those 18 Dislikes are from the company.
Best wishes to this gang of kind members banging the big goons
Let's get something clear here, in Houston in the suburbs (we're internet is more expensive to deploy) 1GB fiber is $40 a month, in NYC you keep wanting to tax corporations you don't understand they just roll all those taxes right to the consumer and that's the only reason internet is expensive.
How do they technically work passed a LAN like how do you actually connect to hosted content on servers
am seaerching for an answer to this by reading through the comments
I assume that the "Super nodes that are fiber connected" are Just places with a high bandwidth business connection.
One question, how does NYC Mesh get its internet in order to distribute it?
resourceful
this might impose certain levels of concerns about security, but let establish a good foundation first
Brilliant 😄 Problem solving 😄😄😂
Great initiative
They aren't big enough yet. Also I'm certain that people using this free net would not use the Internet provided by providers who do sue.
@@TheMightyAgency And that's what is sad about this country, that monopolies are allowed to get away with this. Internet should be offered at a fair and affordable price, so I appreciate what NYC Mesh is doing, and hope this expands to more cities across the US.
@@TheMightyAgency Just change the provider of the Supernode to a non-bitch provider? Although it may get a little costly.
@@TheMightyAgency they showed at least 6 super nodes in this video
