well we don't really see it in the rest of the game and besides the most likely reason is that it's representing the darkness that absorbs and follows the mother which would be the alcohol and the hatred of her ex husband

For the story, I think the parents are divorced and this poor kid is in the middle of this mess (maybe a custody battle with the father) and his talking bear might be this kid’s escape from a horrible reality. 🥺. This was just my first thought when I saw how the mother acted when she answered the door. She acted very apprehensive. Granted, I’m not fully sure if the mother is keeping the kid from the father or if it’s the other way around(the father wanting to get the child from the mother). I feel so sorry for this child, at least he has a cute bear to hold on to. 😊.
I also think the Teddy JUST might be the father's gift to the son. Since it only appeared AFTER she went to answer the door and had an argument with the man.
actually, the child is trapped in a mess with two horrible parents, the mother was alcoholic because the father was abusive, it was explained in the DLC story.

The best story explanation We have, is that the mother is an abusive alcoholic that gained custody from the father who is also abusive. In the beggining, he comes for his visit which she refuses so he leaves a present for the kid. Her booze addled mind can't process things which is why she's so spastic and ends the kids birthday after one bite of cake. She just wants to drink (it's also like 1 pm showing that she doesn't take care of the child) The bear has a walkie talkie and spy camera inside it, hidden by the father so he can capture footage of her abuse. She "drowns" the teddy, imagining it as the father, but the kid finds his toy before the spy equipment is destroyed. Throughout the game, the kid is constantly tortured and abused by his mother, however they perceive it in a childlike way. the forest scenes and cabin represent the child's only happy memories which is why they always return after being traumatized by mom. At the end of the game, the father shows up with police and cps, having seen and recorded everything the mother did, and being able to prove that she wasn't fit to take care of the child. However this is not a happy ending and the child is just going to another form of abuse.
