I was having some failure to feed issues with my R.I. Tactical 45 ACP. A gunsmith told me my problem was likely the R.I. 7 round magazines I was using. He said, they have a flat follower that is most likely causing the problem. He said, get some Colt 7 round magazines, they have a round follower that allows for better feeding of the rounds. I tried it and he was 100% right.
My wife got me a classic RIA 1911 A1 for my birthday this year. It quickly became my go to. I miss the lightweight Glock I used to carry, but I absolutely love my RIA .45 & unless I can get a antique 1911 Springfield, this will be the piece I have on me at all time.
I’ve got the “Tac II” (sans “Ultra”) which is the same gun except no rail, and traditional rear slide serrations only. Mine was made in October ‘21 and I acquired it in April of last year.
First 70 rounds I put through it, had three jams. Since then I’ve probably put approx 600 rounds through it without a hint of trouble. I clean it about every 300 rounds, give or take. I have not made, and do not intend to make, any modifications. Got three mags for it; two ACTs (came with one ACT) and one Mec-Gar. All work well. It eats all ammo I have tried in it without complaint; two types of hollow point (Federal Punch 230 grain and Remington HTP 185 grain) and four brands of 230 grain FMJ range ammo (Winchester, Federal, S&B, and Browning). Mine set me back $700 out the door from Bud’s Gun Shop, including tax, shipping, FFL fee.
Kudos to you if you’re willing to EDC yours. I consider it a bit too large for EDC. However, I do have an OWB belt/holster rig for it that is quite comfortable, and I carry it under my sport coat for “sheepdog” duty at my synagogue. Hope it never comes to that but if it does, I’m confident that my Rock won’t let me down. Terrific weapon, especially for the price.
Gonna be getting one of these in the next few weeks. I'm stoked!!!
I have one of their GI editions in 9mm. I would buy it again, it’s built well and runs great.
I am absolutely smitten with mine, i carry it every time i leave the house, not too long ago i upgraded my recoil spring to a wilson combat flat spring, i believe it's a lighter spring than what was in it from factory, love it, got rid of the kci mags immediately, bought two wilson combat 10 round mags and 1 vickers tactical 8 round mag.
Did you have to trim down the new spring? I'm looking for new springs for mine and don't know if Wilson sends theres out oversized for different models.
i know this sounds barbaric, but i just slapped that bad boy in there, and it works just fine, mines a full size, so i bought one for a full size 1911, i'd imagine that they have ones for the smaller sizes that you can buy instead of only having one size and having to trim it down.
@@AkuKami24 as long as it functions, thats all that matters
@@theshapeexists and functions it does, beautifully, i've put a shit ton of rounds through it, not one malfunction, love it.
These budget friendly companies have been knocking it out of the park the last couple years. Obviously there's a noticeable quality difference between them and higher end, but to an new/average/modding buyer with thinner wallets, they are wonderful.
Noticeable, yes. But the gap is closing. I've seen these budget 1911s put insane round counts through them. Ive seen $3000 les baers break parts at less than 10,000 rounds, and a couple of these RI's surpass that. I bought an iver Johnson eagle 45acp like 12ish years ago and shot the absolute piss out of it. Paid $550 for it new and its nicely fit, never once jammed and has features of guns 3x the price. They are not safe queens and are built to shoot. Only thing ive changed was recoil spring, fit a tighter bushing, and ambi thumb safety.
@@theshapeexists I completely agree. I also feel like most of the rough spots come from parts you can swap out or put a little effort into and get them going smoothly. I love a good budget gun.
Turkish brands offer good quality at less cost.
@@derfaschist9687 the Philippines are churning out some really good quality 1911s these days. Ive seen them blow away some colts.
@@derfaschist9687 agreed, they do!
I changed out the mags to Wilson combat.
Glad to see a newer review on RIA. I do appreciate the info. I'll definitely keep my eyes out for those KCI mags. Seems like they might be trying to cut corners or something. Like you said bad step in the wrong direction. They need to stick with MecGar.
I like a little oil and a fine polishing stone for the rails. Gets the high spots and keeps you straight. A little on the top on the disconnector too. Rock Island’s tend to be a bit high like Springfield Armory and can hinder cartridges from going into battery at first.
"There's a frog in my throat."
"That's what Miss Piggy said."
That was slick, almost missed it, lol.

I remember when my dad first got one of Armscor's pistols it came with two ACT mags and those were sweeeeeeet!
Full length dust covers are sexy. The screw in the trigger pad is an over travel adjustment, it bottoms out on the mag release, only affects how far rearward the trigger can be pressed.
1911s with full rails look so nice
I started three videos ago, his voice always lulls me to sleep. I think you need to do self help and anti-anxiety videos, sooooo calming.
Got the Taylor's Tactical version of this gun and it is awesome. The only problems I have ever had with mine were cheap-ass KCI magazine related. One jammed up in the gun and took a lot of prying (on the mag) to get it out. The other apparently had wonky feed lips because the follower and spring just jumped out at the range and wouldn't stay in when I put it back together. I could try to fix it but meh, junk is junk. As soon as I swapped those junkers out with some nice polished stainless Wilson Combat mags, I have never had another issue with it. Fantastic pistol.
Love my Rock! Only use Wilson or Chip mags for defense. Any other mags for range.
Right now I got this and a Bersa .380 combat plus for my dad (well I encouraged him to get it technically) and while the Bersa is amazing and shoots very well this gun carries very well and I have had a partially crushed spine, hit by an IED and took 5 rounds in vital areas, another 4 to body armor etc) anyway a lot of injuries but I can carry this just fine
For your information my ultra tact 2 (same gun as yours by an MS not a FS) and I got mecgar
Love your channel a lot. Thanks for your work!
The screw in the trigger is for over travel not weight adjustment .
I highly recommend trying the CZ TS2! I bought mine back in February and haven't even wanted to buy another piece since then. The trigger is AMAZING! I bet it's only about 1.5 lb single action only, super crisp. I think it was worth the $1500 that I paid for it including tax.
I just got the 10mm FSHC and it's a really good gun for the pricepoint.
That's a good looking 1911 sir. My brain is also made of pudding.
love mine never has malfunctioned even with steel ammo and dirty, great shooter out the box
i got the m1911 a2 fs match tact it says the match is hand fitted by a gunsmith .... I got it used and found a flat spring in it ... I hand cycled it until it became silky smooth .... took it to the range and it had minimal recoil and muzzle flip oh and it is 9mm . I am going to get Tisa 10mm next looked at one and Tisa builds a nice 1911 with forged parts ..... it feels like a crew serve weapon in my shoulder holster lol ..... been shooting and tuning 1911 for 46 years i am 61 now oucha .....
I noticed my grips were similar to yours when I got mine. I inquired with Rock Island why the relief cut for my magazine release was small and didn't match any of their stock photos and they ended up sending me legit VZ Operator II grips in the mail that they used in their photos. Apparently some people are getting the real VZ grips like they should and some are getting a knockoff G10 grip. There is a noticeable texture difference, the knockoff feeling smooth while the VZ is a rougher texture and more grippy.
Great review and sense of humor. You got another sub.
I have a double stack one for $800. Love it no problems at all.
I will say that KCI mag is depressing but Ive ran a couple in my glocks and they ran just fine
Ria has been making good stuff for a long time now.
So I've been cc a taurus 1911 (my first 1911 besides my grandfathers original) and absolutely loved it but want to get a 2nd one. I've heard both sides of the proverbial coin "ria is trash save up and get a colt"..."ria is very good for a budget 1911" I remember seeing one on the movie swat which was a kimber and absolutely loved that style and this one has that same style. I was always a glock fan and still am but there's something about these that is just like a beautiful woman that doesn't talk you can just stare and work it like you want. Thanks for the video I am assuming since you said this will be your new edc that it's above par.
I always polish whatever I can to any firearm I get. Less friction is always a good thing IMO.
Polishing isn’t always the answer. Sometimes it’s better to have a surface with just enough surface holes/gouges/pits/channels/micro-abrasions to hold oil/grease and allow an even slicker(and longer wearing) surface. That’s why you see “scraped” areas on machining tools. Look up “hand scraping” done by machinists. Pretty cool.
But yeah… I totally understand your school of thought. There are definitely plenty of places on firearms that benefit from good polishing. Just… not every surface. Lol
@@TsunauticusIV Not sanding. Polishing with morhers Mag and 2000 and 3000 grit sandpaper.
It’s like carrying a boat anchor on your hip all day but it’s a great pistol and a bargain compared to other 1911s.
I have the same pew pew! Thank you for sharing. Loved this video. Now I can not find a holster for this model, with that said could you recommend one or two? Once again thank you for your time.
Great dam gun!! I loved it! Double stack, got 2 extra clips. I paid 900$ heavy gun, love it!
good looking, sweet gun, for a price most people can afford! i definitely want one (or a few!) until i can get myself a nicer one
Great review with humor. Your awesome!
Turkish made 1911 are best option for budget tight people. Especially Girsan branded 1911.
cool gun, been thinking about a "Baby Rock" myself.
from a native Nevadan, it's "Nev-add-a".... the Sierra Nev-odd-a Mountains are in Mexico.
PS, the guys at middletown are great.
Rock island guns only have one accompanying magazine each...why not 2?
I'm picturing Kevin Bacon while listening to him😂😂
nice tac 2 ultra sir. sir is this cal 40? or 9mm tac 2?
How does this compare to your Tisas Duty? I have a Rock Island and im considering a Tisas with a rail.
Pretty sure they also keep the bullet that they fire through a gun for ballistics in case it turns up at a crime scene or what have you. I thought that was a law in the US but I could be wrong. Either way if you’re concerned about the bullet that the manufacturer might put into a database then what about the 4473 that you had to fill out to buy the gun in the first place? It just doesn’t make sense to me why some people are so jumpy about the idea when in reality in a SHTF or WROL situation the bullet is not the only way they’ll know someone owns a gun if they bought it at a store. Funnily enough these people who are paranoid about this usually don’t mind “flexing” on the internet with pictures of the guns that they “don’t own.” In reality if they keep a bullet from the gun I bought as a reference in case they find my gun or a bullet matching it at a crime scene it’s not too big of a deal to me. I don’t plan to murder anyone and the I had to fill out numerous forms before I got the gun that would all lead anyone with access to them back to me anyway so the spent casing that comes with a gun is the least of my concerns. I’m glad they test fired it… at least I know it didn’t blow up on the first firing.
I had one in 10mm and loved it. Traded it for a glock like an idiot but I was a youngin thinking I needed something else I still kick myself for that trade. It’s an RTF2 glock 22 tho 🤷♂️🤣
What holster did you end up buying for this pistol for everyday carry?
How did you smooth the rails? Mine is quite stiff and could use a good polish job....
.....my gun
......er...uhm.....the firearm.
It's not something i reccomend if you havent gunsmithed before. Requires sanding and polishing both the slide and frame rails.
@@TheJimminiShow I am relatively decent at doing light gunsmithing on my own stuff. I have many firearms and mainly just bought this because I found it in a pawnshop for $400. I actually did just take a very fine emery board to the rails and it smoothed out considerably. There were a few burrs that I removed. Gun still has a ways to go before it is buttery. Gonna go put some more rounds through it in a bit.
What holster are you using for this gun?
I have the pistol in the A2 configuration and no light mount. Best part it’s a double stack 16+1 10MM. Sweet shooter and oddly enough it’s accurate as shit. I only paid 450.00 for it 😂
How are you gonna get those grips on your glock
I won't tell you whether or not you'll like it after the 220 fiasco, I will only say "Good Luck". 👍
Nice, i like megard mag!
Are the frame, slide and barrel hammer forged? Enjoyed the video.
Fram slide and barrel are forged, hammer is MIM
Thank you for the reply.
@@TheJimminiShowpretty sure the frame is cast
640 where? Oh my bad I thought it was the double stack model in 45 acp
Sweet piece. Funny thing is delusional people online are asking $1,100 for this RIA 🤣🤣🤣
Going the way of the Dodo 🦤 😂😂
Nice looking pistol; IMO, RIA deserves more respect than they get from the general gun community.
My 'win the lottery' buy would be the 10mm double-stack cousin of your pistol... a total beast (and deadly accurate for a non-match pistol).
That gun is sick
What is the tool called for the plunger?
Barrel bushing wrench
Is it a Kimber?
Sorry, new to 1911's and bought the same one. Want to make sure that I can properly clean and reassemble it.
Very cool
i have this same Firearm and I know I will get ish for saying but mine is in 10mm, Why? just because.... HaVe A gOoD dAy!
Like it alot, may be my next Gun.
Just got rock island 1911 in 10mm that also came with the cheap kci mags. Any recommendations on mags for it?
Colt mags for tue delta elite and i think wilson combat makes a 10mm 1911 mag
I prefer Cobramags.
You can get a spingfeild for that
That was the oddest way to assemble a 1911.
That's what miss piggy said. Giggity
Only issues I've ever had was the stupid mag they come with
I still prefer a Tisas. Receiver isn’t cast.
Electric Daisy Carnival
This are riding in tandem proven
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
1911 history is in the philippines...thats why they make better and cheap
It’s a Springfield TRP Operator for poors.
This is not a bad thing
When i first saw it i thought rock island started doing 2011
They do. Tac Ultra FS HC, if I remember correctly
@@gregmarshall4311 yeah they’re more 2011 hybrids than true 2011s but they make them in 9mm, .45acp, and 10mm. 17, 14, and 16 rounds respectively. they’re under 1000 MSRP and i assume they’re no worse than the single stack versions, and those are pretty damn reliable
I dont wanna be that guy....but.
Love these, hate the finish. Actually hate it on any firearm...yeah yeah i know...its durable....blah blah. Just ugly and dull. Rather just have blued. Actually, wish they made this in stainless...
GM
You’re new edc….. ok.
Pill
Im not buying a gun with crappy mags.
Why? That's the EASIEST thing to fix
Hate compact guns, heavier gun I love.
