GAH! Right at the start of the video there's a typo, "Grand Turismo" instead of "Gran." I noticed it right before uploading but I can't fix it because of the crappy video editing software I used for this video, I can't re-render the first half of the video. Don't worry I'm already in the process of switching editing software.
UPDATE: Phantom River Stone has once again made a great blog, this time about Yoshio Goto from 14:20 in this video, the link is here www.phantomriverstone.com/2022/09/who-is-yoshio-goto-whats-shenmue.html

I didn't understand why you even included Gran Turismo in the beginning and the end of your video, what does it have to do with the topic of this video, lol

@@alex.starostin Gran Turismo was included at the start as part of random B-roll of games before the video started proper, then when I got to the end of the video I thought it would be a nice full circle thing if I included the same game at the end, it's got nothing to do with the topic of the video lol

I had no idea how deep the Shenmue iceberg was.
Shenmue 1 is probably my favourite game, playing it in 2000 was like playing something from the future. I even remember still thinking it looked better than most 360 games until at least 2007.
I had never heard of Shenmue for the Saturn and Shenmue Online so this video was a really interesting watch.

I played the original Shenmue 1 on Dreamcast when it came out, I was 11 years old. It blew my little kid mind and opened it in many ways.
I still remember begging my parents to buy me the "Walkthrough" magazine. Eventually they said yes, and I figured out how to find the Old Warehouse #8. Then the whole game opened up and the rest is history. Love this game. Thank you so much for this great video. You've got a gift!

Very good analysis of the different shenmues
you have an opinion that focuses much more on the depth of shenmue
Unlike you, I love the story of Shenmue, the philosophy, the poetry and the quest for revenge that is no longer a quest, and the mystery surrounding the mirrors, but I can understand why you might not be sensitive to it.
concerning the loading, in 1999 on dreamcast, it didn't bother me, I mean the game was so visually and technically evolved that loading was almost normal at the time
especially when you know that even after 24 years the graphic richness and attention to detail of shenmue 1 and 2 have not been equalled
Regarding Yoshio Goto in What's Shenmue, that's the name of the commercial who promoted a big reduction for the price of the Dreamcast in Japan.
and his name was kept, there was even a little music like sega used to do at the time with the saturn and segatenshiro but yoshio goto is much less well known it's more a symbol of an important moment for the reduction of the price of the dreamcast in japan , where segatenshiro was the image of the saturn in japan through advertising and acting.
Concerning Shenmue 1 and 2, there are more than a dozen Japanese guides release back in the dats that talk about a billion little details that no-one has any idea about even today in 2023, and it's quite fascinating to see what Yusuzuki was able to incorporate into his two games at the time.
we're still far from having seen every little detail of shenmue 1 and 2

This may be some false info but iirc one of the VAs who worked on Shenmue III said that they was instructed to make the dialogue readings a little clunky on purpose to try and recreate some of the charm of the first two where some of the VAs just obviously couldn't speak English and were just reading lines as best as they could. Going from memory and can't remember where I saw this so take it with a pinch of salt I suppose.

I think that boosted Saturn upon which the Shenmue protoype was running, the one you mention in the video, is a Saturn with the upgrade card (a wanna be 64x) that was rumored/planned to be release along with Virtua fighter 3 on the Saturn (before it got cancel and moved to the Dreamcast). Am2 at this point was well aware and involved with that device at one point in the Saturn lifespawn, and i'm sure this is the hardware upgrade upon which Shenmue was running as well.

If you can't figure it out then maybe ask on the forums like I did, let me know if you do and I'll try to make sure the information sticks around this time.

I loved this video, but I have to say that you were very kind with shenmue 3... Is the worst of the series. Shenmue 2 is better in almost every aspect... That's disappointing

I mention in the video that I still think it's the worst of the series, but overall I don't think it's a bad game, it's just that the previous games are even better.
      But thanks for watching :)

I find shenmue 3 is better than shenmue 1...
At least the word is bigger and the activities is larger than shenmue 1...
Shenmue 2 was great but thanks to over large amount of baget unlike shenmue 3 it was consider to be indi game yet still i did better then i expected...

The inability to pause Shenmue 3 is one of the LEAST problematic things about that game, to be honest.

I agree, my point was that it was the most BAFFLING thing about the game haha

@@supermoe1985 It was totally baffling for sure. I was utterly disappointed with Shenmue 3 and felt that Yu Suzuki completely blew his chance to complete his story. And then blew it AGAIN with the Anime Shenmue by decided to just re-tell Shenmue 1 and 2's story, and failing to conclude it again (and then the anime got cancelled). As someone who backed Shenmue 3, it was a bitter pill to swallow. I never again will support a kickstarter project. Especially not one from a legacy game creator like this.

Great video! I loved Shenmue I and II, but Shenmue III was very disappointing.
