'How not to be Prime Minister': Liz Truss biographer lifts lid on shortest ever premiership

  • James O'Brien speaks to Sir Anthony Seldon, political commentator and contemporary historian - who is the author of the new book 'Truss at 10 - How not to be Prime Minister'.
Liz Truss served a record 49 days as Prime Minister, a time in the job eclipsed by Sir Keir Starmer this week. Sir Anthony says 'she went about growth the wrong way and still thinks she is right and we are all responsible' and that 'she saw enemies everywhere'.
Sir Anthony concludes saying he has sympathy for her because she believed in the right thing, which was growth and areas left behind, 'but wanting to make life better for people is not good enough when the delivery is catastrophic.'

She can only claim her pension once she reaches pensionable age. What she was entitled to claim was an allowance, not a pension, that is an ongoing myth. It is the Public Duty Service Allowance and is up to £115k, for additional secretarial support and security. It is means tested and she can only claim it from when she was a ex PM to when she lost her seat as an MP. Details are on the cabinet office website.

Truss's problem ,a complete lack of awareness that trickle down economics is fundamentally flawed and a failure to accept that the people in government that she depended on were educated people and as such highly likely to have progressive views . Truss & Kwarteng were both Tufton Street acolytes, steeped in the think-tanks' economic dogma, particularly low taxation for the best-off, and of course the richest.
The mini-budget was based on the notion of tax cuts for the highest earners and worse still these were not funded, but would be paid for by borrowing. This made no economic sense. The markets regarded it as insanity, so saw Britain as a unstable, risky investment so swiftly started to dump its bonds.
Truss has complained that leftie economists were sabotaging her, but that's just not the case. The markets are pragmatic and it was because Truss and Kwarteng were flouting fundamental economic theory and sense that they reacted as they did.
This is what happens when Tufton Street dogma gets exposed to the real world, particularly market economics. What's extraordinary is that Truss is still convinced that she was right and reality was wrong.
