So impressed with this channel. You and Anders Erickson are now my two favorites. Your production quality and bar setup are hands down the best I’ve seen! Keep it up!
I used what I had and it came out very tasty. 1 Plantaya 3 Stars Rum 1 Appleton Estate 12 Rum 1 Giffard Abricot De Roussillon 1 Reål Creme of Coconut 1 Lemon Juice 5 d Saline
I had trouble getting the apricot liqueur, so i made the banana version, but with lemon juice instead of lime and with a 2 -1 vanilla syrup. AMAZING drink. I used Appleton 12 and Plantation 3 Star for the rums.
I found this recipe in Smuggler’s Cove and have loved introducing my friends to it. Absolutely one of my favorite tiki drinks! Thanks so much for this video!
I was just scrolling down to look at the comments to see if anyone suggested using a banana liqueur when you said Geffard and I was like hold up!!!! Here we go!!!! Definitely trying this since I had this on hand to make my Banana Bread old fashioned and my son’s concoction bananas foster martini. Can’t wait to try your version. Thanks for sharing.
I finally made this after wishing i had fhe Apricot liqueur for months. I was not expecting it to be THAT sweet. Wow. I immediately added another oz of unsweetened coconut milk. Better, but still seemed a little unbalanced. I used OFTD, Doorly's XO and Giffard Apricot. I honestly might try that without any simple at all next time and maybe still a little extra coconut milk. I might actually try a touch of allspice dram also.
Hi Derek ! Love your channel. I tried this drink recently at your recommendation. It's now one of my favorites ! I modified my recipe a little. I deleted simple syrup and replaced coconut milk with 1/2 oz Coconut Rum ( the original recipe was too sweet for me) The tweaked version hit the spot !! I appreciate the video quality and your desire to dig into the history of the drinks. Thanks for your excellent work !!
I've heard about this drink a few times but never had the apricot liqueur to give it a go. Went to grab a bottle and struck out, but I did find Giffard's Creme de Peche which I decided would be a decent enough sub. Quite tasty. Glad I found the channel and glad you finally pushed me to give this one a try.
Hi Derek, tried the Tradewinds with the Giffards Banana Liqueur u suggested. Didn't think I'd like it as much as the peach version.... but I did !! I was wondering if ud consider doing a vid on BB Barry's Grog Log The Waikaikian. It doesn't get much love, but honestly, it's my 2nd favorite Tiki cocktail after the '44 Mai Tai. Try it, I think ull like it :)
By far my favorite tiki drink ive had. Friend made me one about two years ago and immediately fell in love with it. Most people ive talked to have never heard of a Tradewinds. I just tell them "you're missing out!!" 😅
Seems like a delicious drink and I'll be making it soon! A question: First you said "coconut cream," then you said "coconut milk," which is what is called for in your written recipe. The one other recipe I've seen for a Tradewinds uses cream of coconut (as opposed to coconut cream), like a piña colada, but no simple syrup (which, by definition, is 1 part sugar and 1 part water, BTW). Are you really calling for coconut milk, like that used in Thai cooking, etc.?
the recipe is in the episodes description, and yes coconut milk + simple syrup. Thats what the recipe calls for. "Cream of Coconut" is coconut milk (like Thai cooking) + sugar. Different bars and books have different ratios. And like the last comment, simple syrup is not always 1:1. That's a made up modern bar interpretation of "simple syrup." You can watch the Rock Candy video for further explanation. Thanks!
If you end up buying another bottle of Apricot Liqueur, skip the Rothman & Winter, and buy a bottle of the Giffard Abricot du Roussillon. Night and day difference!
Just coming across your channel through the Mai Tai series. So fun! Now I'm going back in time to check out older posts. I really dig what you're doing. Is the glass you used for the Tradewinds something that can be found? If so I'd love to know where you picked it up. Cheers!
I just bought the Giffard Apricot. It does indeed taste tropical now. Before I was using and apricot brandy. Together with nutmeg as a garnisch it gave me a winter feel. quite weird.
Ah yes, another one of the liqueurs that I can't find here. LOL! I've tried this once by swapping the Apricot Liqueur for Apricot syrup that I made. Thought it turned out great but I'd like to try the actual recipe. Add another liqueur to my list to make! Great video as always! Cheers!
Which type of coconut milk are you using? At the grocery store there's the carton kind in the refrigerated section that has 50 calories per cup and the canned kind that has 420 calories per cup (5g vs 15g fat per cup). Both are listed as "unsweetened coconut milk"
Coconut Milk from the refrigerator section or placed next to Almond Milk and Milks in general is just super watered down coconut meant to be used as a milk or creamer replacement. For the canned or boxed varieties I don't have a specific brand, but most people say Aroy-D
Interesting.. i have banana liquor and love limes in a cocktail. Need to try your 2nd option. Update - just made it. I made cream of coconut, so didn't add any simple. Came out a bit strong and my family didn't like it as much. Added one more ounce of cream of coconut and that made it better. Used Creme de Banana. All in all, i prefer Pina Colada + .5oz lime juice instead of this, but this isn't a bad drink. Thanks for the video!
I would love to grab a bottle of Giffard Banana liqueur but my local TotalWine does not carry them. They only have Tempus Fugit banana liqueur which is awesome but it tastes different than Giffard.
@@makeanddrink Yes! I had a bottle of Drillaud Apricot liqueur and it's delicious. Makes me wonder if their banana or elderflower liqueur is equally good or not lol.
They won’t be similar. Disaronno is nut based and tastes like almond extract where the apricot is a pure sweet fruit flavor. If you were going to try something else, a peach liqueur would be closest but most fruit liqueur would work well.
i was wondering why my tradewinds was sooo sour... i copied your recipe from the desc. and there was just "coconut milk" not "cream of coconut" so of course my tradewinds lags balance. i will try it with the cream tomorrow but i was wondering if my aprocot was not that good or what :D
@@makeanddrink ah ok, i make my CoC with coconut milk and sugar without water then. is it normal to have that very strong lemon taste? bcs its very powerfull and not really sweet. or is the Bolds Aprikot not the best one for this cocktail?
DrinkMasters are great because they are essentially very inefficient blenders. They don’t break down the ice like a blender and they add a lot of foam.
“Cream of coconut” is basically a coconut milk with added sugar and stabilizers. Coco Lopez or Real brand mainly. “Coconut Cream” is coconut milk with a higher fat %
Couldn’t tell you. I’ve had it in cocktails but not on its own. My assumption is it’s more of that carmelized banana, which I’m sure is delicious as well.
I'm still confused about the coconut milk - you talk about reducing the size in the recipe if you don't want to make 27 oz of the stuff; can you clarify if something like Coconut Real is a substitute, or if you really have to buy a can of coconut milk and mix it with simple syrup?
Just made one and I instantly fell in love with it. Tiki merchandise availability here in the UK is appalling, retro 60 / 70's mai tai glasses, non existent, hawaiian menehune bowls non existent. tiki mugs, limited and expensive, hamilton beach drink masters, non existent, tiki swizzle sticks non existent, bamboo glass straws, non existent etc, etc. Tiki culture here is unfortunately light years behind the American tiki revival. I would even say 50% of the rums you use are unavailable, but I persevere and try and adapt and adjust your ingredients, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Love your channel and advice, even purchased the smugglers cove book you recommended and so pleased i did. Always look forward to your next video. Thank you.
So impressed with this channel. You and Anders Erickson are now my two favorites. Your production quality and bar setup are hands down the best I’ve seen! Keep it up!
Anders is indeed great to, also spike’s breezeway coctail hour
Everyone I've served that drink to has loved it.
Dude your production value. Surprised your channel is still so small
RUclips doesn’t reward production value they reward adhd stimulus
BETTER than a Tradewinds and not a pain to make | The Painkiller (Pusser's optional). Derek, I see a series in the making ... good video.
I don’t think we’re allowed to use the “P” word or they’ll come for us!!
@@makeanddrink i doubt it, greg from how to drink did his with plantation :)
I used what I had and it came out very tasty.
1 Plantaya 3 Stars Rum
1 Appleton Estate 12 Rum
1 Giffard Abricot De Roussillon
1 Reål Creme of Coconut
1 Lemon Juice
5 d Saline
This video was so well done, I’m so impressed, first vid I’ve seen from you and I’m hooked man. Good stuff.
I do love how you're covering tiki's because I know very little about that style in general, keep it up! Loving it!
If you want to add more banana flavours into this drink then use Cross&Smith rum.
It really do have that funky sweet banana flavours in it.
My favourite in smugglers cove. Almost always use gosling black seal rum as the dark rum. Sets the tone
Great video once again!
I had trouble getting the apricot liqueur, so i made the banana version, but with lemon juice instead of lime and with a 2 -1 vanilla syrup. AMAZING drink. I used Appleton 12 and Plantation 3 Star for the rums.
This drink is the definition of balance. Every ingredient pops in it.
I found this recipe in Smuggler’s Cove and have loved introducing my friends to it. Absolutely one of my favorite tiki drinks! Thanks so much for this video!
Love the banana twist one. Those giffard liqueurs are so great, I have the apricot from them too and it’s next level quality
I was just scrolling down to look at the comments to see if anyone suggested using a banana liqueur when you said Geffard and I was like hold up!!!! Here we go!!!!

Actually went and added a 1/4oz Allspice Dram to the 3/4 drink I had left. I don't think that's the trick...
Hey man I just discovered you last week and you’re channel is absolutely fire🔥 Keep up the quality content and I’m waiting till you explode on here!
Thank you!
I made the Tradewinds after watching this episode and it was great! I love Painkillers and this is very similar yet more interesting.
I love these videos! Tiki drinks are my favorite. Keep it up!!
Thank you! Will do!

I bet the Giffard Peach would taste amazing. Pretty much all of their liqueurs are great. Thanks for the feedback

Great production value and well made ! Good luck 👍
Thank you!
I like the adjustment to make this easy to make for 1 or 2 drinks. Great idea.
Great video!
Thank you!
2:25 that lemon looks very orange :)
Probably a Meyer lemon.
Seems like a delicious drink and I'll be making it soon!

Thank you! The tall blue glass is the Trader Vic's E'Ville glass which is their Zombie glass. You can buy those online as well.

That’s sounds like a perfect excuse to use whatever liqueur you have on hand!
Just made a tradewinds with Coruba and Probitas. Quite amazing.
Yes!
Another great video! Video quality is really impressive. Do you use coconut milk or cream of coconut for this cocktail?
Thanks! This is coconut milk, however coconut milk + simple syrup is essentially "cream of coconut."
I have gallons of ume shu (Japanese plum wine). Ume is technically an apricot. So... I bet this would work...

Watched this one for the third time. Didn’t like my first Tradewinds until I changed my rum blend to 5 year Barbados and 12 year Demerara
I would love to grab a bottle of Giffard Banana liqueur but my local TotalWine does not carry them. They only have Tempus Fugit banana liqueur which is awesome but it tastes different than Giffard.

It’s supposed to be coconut milk. But the recipe also calls for simple syrup as well. Those two together make cream of coconut.

I wonder what kind of cheap immersion blender would do the trick instead.
DrinkMasters are great because they are essentially very inefficient blenders. They don’t break down the ice like a blender and they add a lot of foam.
what about using cream of coconut (not the same as coconut cream either)? I've only ever seen that being used in all cocktails
“Cream of coconut” is basically a coconut milk with added sugar and stabilizers. Coco Lopez or Real brand mainly. “Coconut Cream” is coconut milk with a higher fat %
I'd love to see a version made for the Slushi machine.
would it be wierd to use appleton signature and appleton 12 here for this?
Nah, go for it!
How does the Giffard compare to tempus fugit banana?
Couldn’t tell you. I’ve had it in cocktails but not on its own. My assumption is it’s more of that carmelized banana, which I’m sure is delicious as well.

Ok hear me out. Somehow add a peanut butter taste to the banana version. Maybe a roasted peanut orgeat.
I bet this would be good with lychee liqueur
Can't use coco lopez in this?
Yes you can
