    I was in 9th grade when the Ronettes came on the radio in 1964, I was 15 at the time, dating my boyfriend & married him at 16, 1965. Shawn, you said you married the love of your life from school, we did too & hope you are happy as long as we are…58 yrs, Oct.16, 1965! Still love The Ronettes!👍👏👏👏♥️

      @@LindaPhillips-u1p a lot of people married young in those days, all my friends & my two sisters were only 16. Would I do it again if I had a chance…no, but our home life wasn’t good, luckily, I met & married a good man who didn’t have a good home life either. We’ve had a good home life together thru the years.👍😊💜

    This is another one of the fabulous girl groups from the early 60's. Phil Spector produced this group. He later married the lead singer Ronnie. They had some great hits including "Be My Baby", "Baby, I Love You", "(The Best Part of) Breakin' Up" & "Walking In The Rain". Sadly we just lost Ronnie but she left a great legacy of her music.

      Well, that's kind of silly. There's no debate about this track. It's easily one of the most recognizable and cherished of the rock era (post-1955) and continues to show up near the top of most lists of the greatest records of all time. What's the problem with that?? It's a simple fact.

    When I saw the Beatles at Shea Aug 23 1966, the Ronettes were one of the opening acts. And if you were alive back then you knew all about Phil Spector and his obsession with Ronnie and how he tormented her and ruined her life. You also lived long enough to see him convicted of the murder of Lana Clarkson. He was a creep. He also pissed McCartney off by adding female voices and Orchestra background to The Long and Winding Road. You have a lot to study. Spector was famous for the Wall of Sound.

    Phil Spector and the Wall of Sound. Musicians included Hal Blaine on drums, Larry Knechtel on piano, Leon Russell on piano, Tommy Tedesco on guitar, Carol Kaye on bass. Way in the background, Sonny Bono was banging a tambourine.

    This is what put Phil Spector on the map with it's Wall of Sound sound. Spector said he was writing 'symphonies for kids' with these productions. Hugely influential on later rockers like the Beatles.

    Now, Shawn, you must react to The Beach Boys “Don’t Worry Baby”. Brian Wilson, the writer and producer (and musician and singer) in The Beach Boys idolized Phil Spector and his “wall of sound” productions - Be My Baby being the epitome of this style of production. And you’ll hear the direct similarity of the two songs, melodically as well as in the production. Classic Beach Boys (early period).
    Thanks!!!

    The video is from the Big TNT Show which was a concert film from 1965, a sequel to 1964's the T.A.M.I. Show. Ronnie's sister Estelle is behind Ronnie's right shoulder and their cousin Nedra Talley is to her left. You can't see them in this clip but the actress Teri Garr and the choreographer/singer Toni Basil were among the backing dancers.

    Phil Spector was a brilliant man, musically, but also a very complicated man mentally. According to Ronnie's autobiography, he terrified her while they were married, controlling every move she made and threatening her repeatedly. Luckily, she escaped before he could do what he did later to Lana Clarkson...murder...which is why he was in prison when he died in 2021. Ronnie was a remarkable woman.

  • @brewstergallery
    @brewstergallery 7 месяцев назад +1

    Just wanted to mention a couple of factoids: These beautiful talented women were of Black, Native American and Irish descent add Puerto Rican for Nedra. The drum opening by Hal Blaine was created when he dropped a stick leaving out the 1st snare hit and they liked it that way. The terrible history of Phil and Ronnies marriage is on par with Ike and Tinas. Ronnie had to break out of their home literally run for her life. The Beatles were huge fans and in 1964 they all hung out, John and Ronnie got close so when the Ronettes went to the UK a 2nd time Phil sent Ronnie's cousin in her place ! There are pictures of them all together.

  • @John_Chu
    @John_Chu 7 месяцев назад +3

    Ronnie was an immense talent. The worst thing that happened to her was marrying Phil Spector, who essentially ended her career and kept her prisoner in their mansion until they eventually divorced. The other point that needs to be made is Hal Blaine's incredible drumming. In fact, Hal has revealed that the iconic drum pattern he came up with was actually a mistake: he accidentally dropped one of his drumsticks on the first take. Spector thought it was intentional and loved it. Blaine never told him that it wasn't intentional.

  • @sourisvoleur4854
    @sourisvoleur4854 7 месяцев назад +1

    The drumline you hear at the beginning is called the "Be My Baby beat," and it's used in hundreds of songs from Billy Joel to Depeche Mode to Alan Parsons Project and beyond. It was created when Wrecking Crew drummer Hal Blaine dropped a stick and missed a snare hit. The other people in the studio loved the sound, and so it became part of the song.
