How-to and Reviews
I like how the dog is leaving you a present at 0:48 😂
Lol. I left that in there on purpose. I wondered if anyone would notice!
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial haha good choice 👍
Good eye. Hard to see on my phone, with old eyes. Lol.
This is my new favorite video series on the internet. We bought a green giant today and I can’t wait to come back and see your growth for 2023! Thank you for sharing!
Awesome! I am measuring them and will definitely post a video at the end of the year!
awesome.very helpful. We need a 4th year update!
Love this video series! I figured the 3-5 ft per year was a stretch. Glad to see real results. We bought 10 and just planted them this month. We don’t have to worry about deer, but we will still cover them the first year for winter. Looking forward to seeing more on this.
Nice! They have been growing more each year. I think the 3 to 5 feet kicks in once they are established. They grew 2 to 3.75 feet last year (year 3).
I’ve already started measuring this year. Hopefully they grow the advertised 3 to 5 feet this year. There will definitely be a Year 4 video at the end of the year.
We planted them 6ft apart I'm glad to see a solution for deer 🦌 I noticed tracks in my back yard and didn't think to cover them for winter. 🙃 I really was hoping for 3ft a year for fast privacy oh well mine have been in since last may look similar growth. Thanks for the video 📹 very useful 🙂
Nice! Glad the video was helpful! Hopefully I’ll see 3 to 5 feet next year. I’ll do another update video at the end of the year.
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial What's up brother, I planted over 250 TGG's 5 years ago...the 3-5 feet growth a year is an exaggeration to be perfectly honest. Expect 2-2.6'' feet a year
@@cattivo217 good to know. I appreciate it!
It's 3 to 5 ft per year ONCE ESTABLISHED which is in year 3!
thanks for sharing. just put in 20 of them around 12", the branches look clownishly large compared to the height until this month(August) and theyve started gaining height, now looking much better!
Nice video. Great results. Hope to see more.
Thanks! I will definitely continue to update each year!
Tks for your effort to record and share your findings on your green giant arborvitae. It is a tree that I am thinking of planting, since it’s so pretty. However, I do need to be sure of the specifics of the tree, size, height and width to allow space for its full growth. I learned that once it settled down after the first couple growing seasons, it’ll really take off. I’ll be very interested to see what growth you’ll get the next few years! Hope the deers will leave them alone!! Happy tree 🌲🌲🌲growing!!
I’ve heard the same, that the third year is when they really start to grow. I’m looking forward to this year. I started measuring a couple days ago.
I planted 28 TGG in April of 2019 - I didn't measure like you but, I can attest I experienced the same results as you and the growth continued through year 3 and now starting my 4th year. Very Happy with the results! My trees are all inside of a 6 foot wooden fence so I have had no problem with deer. Great Video ~Thank you!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing! I’m looking forward to this year.
Thanks for the great video. As an engineer, I appreciate the thoroughness you put into the measurements and graphs.😁
Awesome, glad you enjoyed it! I also work as a mechanical engineer.
We need an arborvitae update now that summer is here!!
Absolutely! I am measuring them every month. I will do a 3rd year update in December.
Lot of hard work done..thx
They are fast grower! I planted 3 in 2021 in my front yard by the entry way. They are leas than foot tall. now they are 3 feet tall
Nice! Mine are also doing well this year. I started measuring them again in April. They are chugging along. Getting taller.
This was very helpful thank u!!
Sleep, Creep, Leap as they say.
The first year expect little grow as they develop roots.
The second year roots start to take and the tree creeps higher.
The third year the tree has more developed roots and leaps.
I will also add that if you give them transplant fertilizer the first year to develop good roots and then fertilizer with more nitrogen the second , third year,..... and have well drained soil it helps a lot.
Thanks! Next summer will be the third summer. I’m hoping to see some of that advertised 3 to 5 feet per year!
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial I'm so Jelly.
I am just starting some Cedars to block out my neighbors new bright blue Basketball court this coming spring. ( that was always beautiful green space.)
I do not expect much growth at all in the first year.
Next year I will fertilized them to maximize their growth.
I would not expect 5 feet a year,, but I have definitely noticed a leap in the 3rd and 4 year.
I planted hybrid willows right at a year ago from sticks. Most are about 12 foot tall or better now. Not as pretty and you loose all your privacy in the winter but they are quick.
Nice! Great option for the right circumstances.
I planted a row of thuja, with a row in front of that of hybrid willow, and then in front of that a stand of Miscanthus x gigantic 😂😂I really don’t want to see my neighbors
@@joshsaville5794 I'm not too fond of mine either lol.
🤣🤣🤣 The dog taking a shit in the background
It cracked me up. I was hoping someone would notice it, lol.
Brah,... the trees are growing and you look more SWOLE as well!
Lol. Thanks. Grinding every day!
Can you plant these in a the dead winter at 12 inches tall and survive?
Thank you and great video
Sorry for the late response!
The recommended best time is spring or late fall. Now is the perfect time, lol.
Root the broken branches for starting new trees...they root easily.
Awesome, thanks!
Great trees! What growing zone are you in?
Zone 5 and 6.
Thanks for the share. What state are you in and did you use any fertilizers? Thanks in advance
I’m in Hardiness Zone 6. No fertilizer. Just water.
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial Thanks much! I am planning to use some 6-2-4… hope it won’t mess anything up :)
Also, how far did you plant them? I am thinking about 5ft or less..?
@@icart83 I personally planted them 5 feet apart, which is the recommended minimum. I was told they would get 20 to 25 feet tall and 12 to 15 feet in diameter at 5 foot spacing. They will get bigger if they are spaced apart more and have more room to grow.
Check out my video for the first year results. The beginning of I t goes over the recommended spacing.

You can spray them with pyr ethrin to keep deer off
Awesome! Thanks!
Ather planting do you to put some type of fertlizater ?
I used tree spikes the first year. I purchased them locally, but an exam is in the link below.
I just used water the second year. No fertilizer.
amzn.to/3mZX6PZ
Slow pretty slow lol at full hight they will look fantastic I’m sure. I thought they were supposed to be 3-5 feet every year starting at 6 months.
They are advertised as 3 to 5 feet per year. I’m told it takes 3 years for them to get established before they grow at that rate.
+5 feet next year for sure! Lol.
So are you going to protect these every winter going forward?
Yes, I am planning to continue to put a temporary mesh fence around them in the winter.
I’ve seen adult trees where the bottom 5 feet is destroyed from deer.
Not a problem in the city, but I have an abundance of deer.
How far from your property line did you plant
I went 8 feet because I was told they would get to 12 to 15 feet in diameter when spaced 5 feet apart. If you space them farther apart, they will get bigger. I would recommend 10 feet (at 5 feet spacing) if I can do it over again.
How did you do your dripper system? Just holes cut in a garden hose?
Yes, that’s it. Garden hose with a small hole drilled at each tree. It does the job.
Thank you for the reply!
Where did you get that fencing ?
I got the posts locally from a TSC. The netting was from Amazon. It’s not the best netting. It will get through this winter, but I won’t be reusing it.
00:48 lol
I laughed when I saw that and left it in there on purpose. Glad you enjoyed it!
Where r u located?
I’m in zone 5
www.fast-growing-trees.com/pages/usda-hardiness-zone-map
Dog's helping to fertilize 😅
I left it in there for fun. I knew someone would spot it!
How far apart did you plant them
I planted them 5 feet apart, which was the recommended minimum. My goal is a solid wall of trees. The father apart they are planted, the larger they will grow.
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial thank you. I keep researching and 5 feet seems like the standard, my neighbors are very close to me
@@zappos49 Nice.
I purchased mine from the link below, and used their guide. I also called them. They said with the trees spaced 5 feet apart, they will grow 20 to 25 feet tall. But, they grow up to 40 feet tall, if planted further apart.
I recommend getting some taller trees to start with. I bought the small ones. They were a little over a foot tall. After three years, several of them are 6 to 8 feet tall. But it took a long time to get there. They don’t grow much the first year. If I could do it over again, I would start with taller ones.

How often did you water them?
I typically do it 2 to 4 days per week. Weather dependent. I water them less if it’s rains. More if it’s a scorcher.
