Because as an FE lecturer he'd be earning 50% or more less than he earns at the minute. Further education in the UK is a shambles - do you think the Conservatives pay money into an education system that only really serves working class kids? Every-time they offer tax cuts in peoples income that money has to come somewhere - FE education is one place that has basically subsidised everyone else's tax cuts.
Thanks Ultimate Handyman - I turned 40 a couple of years ago and as mandated by law I now wear old clothes rather than new clothes and spend a lot of time in my garage. I taught myself Carpentry (via RUclips) and learning my DIY skills - which you have helped out a lot on, but electrics have always mystified me. I extended the light circuit into space above my garage - but I just did it as one circuit (as I didn't understand the switch wires), but I may revisit this after seeing your video. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos - we see 10 minutes of video - but we understand there the huge amount of effort of planning, editing, compiling these videos that you undertake to help out your grateful audience. These videos really do help a lot of people like me who are just starting out in DIY. I seem to recall your video around removed cross-threaded screws being very helpful. So thank you for everything you do and when you see RUclips are barely paying you anything for your work - there are many thousands of grateful people out there that you've helped.
Thank you. After hours of trial and error, trying to find the right sequence of wiring, I checked out your video and within minutes had my kithen down lights working properly.

I'm looking to install a bathroom fan with an isolator switch and the diagrams make sense, easy enough to follow, but I haven't had a chance yet to figure out where to wire it from. Now I'll be able to identify which of the three it is and proceed from there. Very helpful

@@ultimatehandyman so now the LED light on the bottom of my bedroom ceiling fan has started to emit a permenant dim glow since I fitted the kitchen down lights!? Do you have a fix?
I’m not an electrician that does domestic installations, but I do have electrical qualifications for working on site (three phase etc.). I’m afraid I would never get the opportunity to do a video on lighting fault finding, as it’s something I rarely ever do (unless a mate removes a two gang light switch and can’t get his lights working again) 👍

Hi mate, thanks for this video. We live in a bungalow and I have a hallway with 3 ceiling roses controlled by 1 switch at either end of the hall. I am wanting to take these away and fit flush ceiling lights. The new lights have 2 terminal spaces for blue and 2 for brown. One of the ceiling roses has 1 blue and 1 brown going to it from the loft, the next has 2 brown and 2 blue, the next has 3 brown and 3 blue. But as i said, the connector on my new lights only has space for 2 brown and 2 blue so how does this work?
The first with most wires will have loop in and loop out. This is basically carrying Live Neutral and earth from point to point. The switched live is taken to the switch for each set of lights controlled. In your case switched live neutral and earth is going from the main ceiling rose (A) to light (B) and from light b to a final pendant (C). Point A, B & C would be better terminated in maintenance free wago light or ideal boxes. Make sure no inner sheath of the twin and earth is not exposed. Hope this helps. 👍🏼
The cables are really awkward and small to get into the fittings! It’s definitely an art…. Having a mare with mine and struggling to get the old light fitting back on as the downstairs lights won’t come On. My MCB is brand new and I’ll be getting my mate to come and sort! But this video makes it much easier to understand. Thanks

I always knew that switching is always on the live side but didn't know until your excellent video that there were so many ways to loop in for switching. Having moved into a house with loop connections in an existing big 1970's ceiling fitting via nylon blocks, there was clearly no way that all three blocks would fit in a standard sized rose, so have pulled all cables up into the loft and am attempting the joint box method there. Thanks for such a detailed video.
Hi I have a ceiling rose with wires same as shown at 6:05 with one light in middle of the room and a switch but now I want few more led lights with a separate swith what should I suppose to do? Shell I put a wire and connect it to the cable coming from consumer box with live neutral connected to the same point and connect a second rose?
I have a loop in at ceiling rose set up in my bathroom with only one light fixture. I want to install multiple (x5) downlights to the bathroom. Can I just connect the wire that will supply the new lights to the current connections of the existing light fixture?
Hi bud! Your videos are very good and well explained. Can I just ask please… When I loop off the existing switch to add a new switch. Can I then add the power supply for the light to the switch I’ve just added NOT the existing switch? Please help advise bud!
If I lived in the UK I'd stick to plumbing only. I'd get zapped once to many times for want of remembering all those unfamiliar colours. Lol. Great video demo, thanks!
Excellent video, thanks. Perhaps you should mention that if you use the junction box method then the junction box should be accessible e.g. not located under floorboards. Any connections that are not accessible should be maintenance free e.g. Wago type lever. The screws in the junction box can, theoretically, become loose over time and are therefore not maintenance free.
I have just fitted 3 bulb ceiling light which has a ceiling rose fitted like that at 6:14 on the video (2 cables coming from ceiling, not 3). I have fitted 3 dimmable LED lights, and a LED compatible dimmer switch. However, when switching on all I get is the initial click which switches the lights on fully and the rest of the turn of the knob has no effect. I have tried another dimmer (same result) and tried one of the dimmers connected up to a simple test cable setup in the garage and the dimmer works ok. It's got me really baffled.
Such an easy to follow video. I wanted to ask on a separate note, if one were To install a quinetico wireless receiver, would the switching cable be made redundant?
Ultimate Handyman, Many thanks for this video and the others. I have got a small project in my Garage. there is a lamp using ceiling rose and is looped at Switch. I want to add another light . can i just use the loop on the current rose to get the power to next rose and then to light . Thanks, Robert
Yes, if you want the lamp to be controlled by the same switch, just connect the new lamp to L,N,E at the current ceiling rose. (obviously switch the electric off at the consumer unit first) Thanks for the comment 👍
I have two set's of wires coming out of my ceiling going to an existing plastic ceiling rose. Both these wires have Brown, Blue, and Earth, so 6 cables. I have a new metal light fitting thats a full replacement for the old rose. My new light fitting is pre wired, clearly labelled and only has 3 connection holes - Live, Neural and Earth. What do i do with 6 cables coming from my ceiling when going into 3??? Do i just twist together brown brown, blue blue and earth earth, then connect to the 3 holes in my new metal light fitting??? Thank you.
I prefer to loop at the switch, it means you don't need to be up a ladder trying to fault find at the ceiling rose, you can just work comfortably at the switch, another advantage doing it this way is it eliminates rather unskillful diyers getting the switch live mixed up with the neutral then blowing their electrics or themselves up in the process time and time again, perhaps the only downside with this method is the switch box can get a bit crowded so it can make fitting the likes of dimmers a bit of a pain, I don't like dimmers anyway so doesn't bother me that much. I guess everyone has there own preferred method wiring lighting circuits, I try to avoid junction boxes unless absolutely necessary, I personally like to keep all my connections easily accessible but that is just me. Good vid
Please can you do a video on how to reposition your wires/light fixture (I.e. I need to centre my light over the dining table as the current positioning is way off)
When wiring a LED batten lighting a garage that is on the main lighting ring would I have to use a junction box to connect to the switch, as I cannot understand how you could bring the feed in one end and the switch line out the other whilst keeping the continuity of the ring. Have a good xmas
No, you don't need a ring circuit for lights, they are a radial circuit. You don't need a junction box, at the light fitting you have the live cable with the L,N,E wires. Neutral and earth go into their respective terminals. The live goes into a terminal connector (not connected to the light terminal). Then a cable is run to the switch, earth is connected to the earth terminal. The live is connected to the other live in the terminal block. Then the neutral wire is sheathed with Brown sleeving and placed into the L terminal on the fitting. Obviously the switch is installed at the other end of the switch cable. Thanks for the comment 👍

I have tried another dimmer (same result) and tried one of the dimmers connected up to a simple test cable setup in the garage and the dimmer works ok.
It's got me really baffled.
Have you tried just using a regular switch on the circuit?
Thanks for the comment
Not all dimmers marked as "LED Compatible" work with all types of LED technology. These are some of the best on the Market zanocontrols.co.uk/
Such an easy to follow video. I wanted to ask on a separate note, if one were To install a quinetico wireless receiver, would the switching cable be made redundant?
I’ve never used any Quinetic stuff, but I would assume that the switch cable was no longer necessary 👍
really helpful and informative - thanks

Ultimate Handyman, Many thanks for this video and the others. I have got a small project in my Garage. there is a lamp using ceiling rose and is looped at Switch. I want to add another light . can i just use the loop on the current rose to get the power to next rose and then to light . Thanks, Robert
Yes, if you want the lamp to be controlled by the same switch, just connect the new lamp to L,N,E at the current ceiling rose. (obviously switch the electric off at the consumer unit first)

@@ultimatehandyman Did it. Thanks. All sorted.
Superb explanation. 👍
Thank you 🙂
I have two set's of wires coming out of my ceiling going to an existing plastic ceiling rose.
Thank you.
still helping 6 years later

Cheers very informative and useful for up and coming projects
I'm glad the video helped ;-)

Good vid
I agree about dimmer switches- they are a right load of rubbish!

Extremely informative. Great technical vlog.

Hi, just one little point from the start of your vid, Brown is the phase core and blue is neutral, they are both to be considered live cores.
Thanks for the comment
Not meaning to be a smart arse, but they are both referred to as 'line conductors'..
