    Growing up, my dad had a 1971 sports illustrated football game. He would always play as the Dallas Cowboys because they were by far the best team in the box (this was not at a balanced game). I loved playing even though i constantly lost. I remember one night, i won two games in a row. It was an amazing feeling . My dad had been cussing about the dice all night. When i won that second game, he lost his cool and ripped up his beloved dallas cowboy sheet. I was both excited and horrified. Excited because i knew i would go to bed that night as champion. Horrified, because i wasn't sure he would ever play again. Well, he taped his dallas cowboy sheet back together and we have played many times since. The game now sits in my collection. And every time i see that Dallas cowboy sheet, i am reminded of a evening of both unbridled rage and the taste of sweet sweet victory.

    I used to play Diplomacy with my dad and younger brother ALL the time while growing up. Betraying each other was kinda the whole thing. EVERYTHING was allowed: Stealing each others plans while mom called us to dinner, which lead to leaving FAKE plans lying around. Spying on the talks others would have. Man, I once hid a tape recorder (yes, I'm old) in the room where I knew my father and brother would go into to talk. I actually think no one ever got mad.
    Then, years later, I played the game with friends. First scoring round, one was backstabbed by me. He looked SO hurt. I explained that shifting allegiances is kinda the point of the game, but he just kept repeating "I would NEVER do that to a friend!" . I felt like I had kicked a puppy. Needless to say, we broke off the game and never played it again. :/

      Settlers is ok. But if you play with 5-6 players it generally becomes obnoxious. Particularly the Cities and Knigts expansion. We made the mistake of playing that and it turned an hour and a half game into a 3 + hour game. Maybe it was slowness due to lack of familiarity with the game, but it was excruciatingly boring.

    Used Diplomacy's reputation for inducing rage to my advantage once. My friend and I were playing with a new group, he was Austria and I was France. I had teamed up with England and Germany. A couple turns in they stabbed me on something inconsequential, think it was one of the lowland neutrals. When they did, I went on a 5 minute rant about how I'm going to throw everything I have into ruining them even if it costs me the game.
    My friend and I have been gaming forever and he knows me well. The discussion phase after my rant we go into another room to talk. As soon as he closes the door he goes "So, Italy it is then?" I'm like "Yep". Poor guy left himself wide open thinking his border with me was safe, and England and Germany were bracing for impact. Took 3 bases from Italy in one turn.

    Catan can be sooo frustrating with unbalanced dice, one time I had a 6, an 8, and some other numbers, this other guy had a 3, a 2, AND THEY KEPT COMING AND COMING, all 2s and 3s, he literally had more than 20 cards in his hand and NO 7 CAME UP. Meanwhile no 6 nor 8 ever happened, so I had to look how he just cut every possibility of advancement that I had not because it was particularly good for him but just because he saw that he could do it, and then just make 3 points in his last turn and still have more than 10 cards in his hand, aaaah.
    This other time with a different copy of the game I was going to build a house somewhere, I just had to build the house, and then turn after turn went on and I got no resources, and this other gal comes and just builds a road and builds another road and then builds the house, ok, I'll go this way instead then-nope, the same gal comes and blocks me there, and the same thing the third time! This was with the recommended set up for first time players but I got NO resource, NO 6 almost in the whole game. Catan is a great game, but it comes with so cheap dice and there's nothing you can do about it if it happens to you, ok I'll just sit here and watch you take everything away from me why not, that seems fun.
    Very funny list btw, really enjoyed watching it!

    • @philippenachtergal6077

      The most frustrating with Catan, not enraging but frustrating, is that it can literally be impossible for you to win on round 2 or 3. If people settle close to you during the initial setup and then get luckier than you and manage to block, you'll spend 90% of the game knowing that you can't possibly get more than 8 points even if you were to decide the result of every single dice throw.

What? He clearly has no idea we are at a hospital... I accuse him and he is a doctor... What? Ask if I visit this location is it possible that I might get 'shot'? And then there is the guy who said you might smell trees in a grocery store. when questioned, he said that they may sell an air freshener. or what's up with vague answers from non spy like maybe or sometimes. I'm in a bank and they ask if I make a lot of money... my answer is... if I don't get caught. my question is Do you see Ben often at this location? come on people... get it together.

    There are many games that have gotten me or someone else angry. When I was a kid, my brother, our friend, and I played A LOT of Risk and Fortress America. So much so that I never wanted to see another copy of Risk again. Flash forward several years and my brother pulls out the NEW Risk that has these special mission cards. Well, I bite, but remind my brother I'm done with the game. We get our mission cards and do our setup. Looking at the board, I notice a few things that would let me win the game easily so I set my plan in motion. I vacate Africa and begin attacking our friend, leaving everything ripe for a blitzkrieg down through Africa, for my brother. I'm green, he's red, and our friend is blue. I turn to my brother and smile. "I know you like Africa, I'm going to finish off Russia, why don't you take him out in Africa? My brother always goes for Africa so he smiles in return and I wipe out the blue forces in Russia. He then does his blitzkrieg and takes out the remaining blue in Africa and sees that I'm stretched out really thin and am easy pickings. Our friend is upset that he's been eliminated before his first turn when I smile and let him know that the game's over. That's when I reveal my secret mission card: I win if the blue player is eliminated. My brother went in to such a rage that I think he threw the game away. He's not as easy to manipulate after that, but boy oh boy was he angry! HAH! I really enjoyed this video, you guys had me laughing pretty hard at the end :)

      1. We were playing a 3-player game. Initial settlements in, 2 of us are fighting for the same port. Both of us need a brick to build a road to reach there. And this 3rd player trades with the other guy and I have been land locked.
      2. Someone making a stupid trade with a person who seemingly is on 6 points. After the trade, the player reveals the third knight card and builds a settlement to win the game.
      I can go on and on. It is important to play with players who know what is going on in the game.

  • @Icy_Sparks

    Munchkin and Cyclades. I will never ever play these games again and both for the same reasons:
    1. King making by helping that player direktly and basically admitting that they want him to win
    2. King making by doing nothing even though you could
    3. Dragging emotions and grudges from last game into next and start to target players from the start. the result is always indirect king making.
    If you can't tell by now: King making for the sake of pissing off someone always makes me rage.

      Aaron Dovauo what's king making ?

    • @aarondovauo1471
      @aarondovauo1471 7 лет назад +1

      Al Bie Well, others may have their own definition but I consider it "King making" when one player ignores their own win conditions to either allow or even assist another player to win. There are very few games that are not heavily impacted by this negative behaviour if a player chooses to be a kingmaker.
      There are a few reasons this can wreck an otherwise fun game, but the most common issue is that most games are implicitly balanced so that everyone is trying to "win," whatever that looks like. When one player doesn't pursue that it means who ever they are supporting (or just ignoring) is at a considerable advantage.
      Another reason it is annoying is it is basically a big "fuck you" to the rest of the table, and especially towards whoever the kingmaker is attacking. The kingmaker is basically saying "I have fun by making sure you don't." It's pretty low behaviour.

    • @Al-uf1pg
      @Al-uf1pg 7 лет назад +1

    I agree with Tom that Diplomacy is probably the most frustrating game ever. I've been back-stabbed by people because another player gave them a doughnut! It is an incredibly frustrating game - you can spend a whole day (we'd play 1 move a day) planning and negotiating the most amazing move and then the ones who are supposed to support you do something else and you've just lost the game. But I also think this is one of the best games ever...

  • @drumdudebill
    @drumdudebill 6 лет назад +1

    I shall raise the rage level regarding Diplomacy. I was walking through the gaming area at GenCon on a Sunday morning, passing by the tables hosting the final round of the Diplomacy Tournament. Just in time I saw one player totally lose it. He turned to another player with total anger on his face and lunged at him. They both grappled for a few seconds, then their combined momentum took both of them, still embracing in mutually applied death grips, away from their gaming area and into the tables next to them where they both collapsed onto the tables that were currently hosting a large scale miniatures game. That got the miniatures judge involved, and it took the arrival of convention security to bring the matter to an end. Later on I learned that the two guys in the Diplomacy game were (up to that time!) good friends who had come to GenCon specifically to enter the Diplomacy Tournament, having already agreed to work together to their mutual benefit. Only after both made it to the final round did one of the guys decide to betray his best friend. Game-wise, beautiful move; in reality, I had witnessed a long friendship dissolve before my eyes.

      It really depends on the people playing. I have been playing magic for years at my local game store and have yet to see someone do anything even close to that. I've only seen people get frustrated before, but not rage-filled.
      Though I have heard of it, and I'm sure it happens with some people.

    • @Snowynz
      @Snowynz 4 года назад

      I used to play the MTG a lot in the 90s and it seems like in my area all players sort of agreed on two gentleman house rules to play by, which really relieved frustration:
      1. Don't put counterspells in your deck.
      2. No direct damage to players.
      3. Don't add (or remove) cards to your deck to beat another specific deck or color. If you for example want a Circle of Protection in your deck then keep them in all the time.
      If someone didn't adhere to these rules, you wouldn't play them again.
      Everyone usually carried about 3 decks too, so if someone's main deck was too powerful you could just request to play one of their weaker decks.
      I stopped playing some time after 5th edition, so I'm sure a lot of annoying mechanisms have been added to the game since then.

    The first game that comes to mind is Nile. You see everyone else harvesting their fields but you can't even plant one at times and if you do manage to plant one, you'll be outplanted the very next turn, causing you to discard the field. And as if that wasn't enough, once you get three or more crop fields under your control, before you can say "wait, my fields have the same number of cards and they're tied for most cards"- the next flipped card will be Plague of Locusts. All of those cards - eaten.

    Awesome list, even my wife who has no interest in board games was watching with me and laughing. Anyway, my rage inducing games would be Monopoly, Diplomacy, this game where it's a team of aliens vs. astronauts and everyone has a dry-erase hidden-movement pad (I forget what it's called but I played it once and never will again), and Agricola. God damn I get so goddamn angry in Agricola. I hate that game now with a blazing hatred of a thousand suns.

    Monopoly. I had many arguments playing that game. I used to like it even though there had been a few arguments. But a few years before I was a board game hobbyist, my wife and I, with a friend and his wife a couple other players played Monopoly. 1 player we discovered never traded at all, ever! No matter how sweet the deal was made to him he wouldn't trade. I got angry. But the there were other arguments, I decided after that game I would never play Monopoly again.

    I have not had a 'rage' experience in a very long time. My last one would have been Axis and Allies with my brother. In the late eighties and early nineties we had about a five year stretch where it seemed EVERY board game we played ended up in a rules dispute and whoever of the two of us came out on the short end would just rage quit. I remember the time when one of us, I think it was me,could well have been him, admitted the other just might be right. It was an A&A game and from that time, he is the person with whom I would more prefer to at a game than anyone else.

  • @rlholo
    @rlholo 7 лет назад

    The first time we played Arboretum, we misunderstood the rules to allow stealing runs that other players had spent the entire game building. So the end-game was like Babel on steroids. Things got a bit tense - then we re-read the rules and had a good laugh.

    There was a game that all my friends agreed was a fun game and we played it over and over for more than a year. Then we put it away and swore never to play it again to preserve our friendships. Every single game had one or more shouting matches, slammed doors, and general hurt feelings. That game was Supremecy. A very well made game about Cold War politics and brinksmanship. But once the nukes fly, someone gets too invested and goes balistic. What's worse is a player who gets mad can ruin the game inside the rules by nuking their own territory to bring the nukes on the board up to 12 which destrroys the world. Any game with a if-I-can't-win-everybody-dies mechanic will trigger rage eventually.

    I agree with the Catan comments! I played a game with another father and his two sons. He and one son agreed to gang up on the other, who was about to win the game. In order to steal the longest road card, he needed four wheat to trade for a brick. So he traded one wheat for two wheat from his son, giving him the four he needed and stealing the road. The other son had no more road pieces and ended up losing! It might not have been legal-in fact, I’m sure it wasn’t-but the ensuing rage lasted fifteen minutes!

    With you on Game of Thrones. That game is really good but so stressful and can make people so angry. Also have a Mysterium story. So we're about to run out of time and my friend David is the ghost and I have to work out the murder weapon. He hands out the cards, my friends Josh and Alex both go, ah ha! but when David puts a card in front of me I'm like...what the?! It was a guy on a train. So I'm looking at all the murder weapons desperately trying to work it out. What could line up with the train? I go by shape, color anything trying to work it out and then I just guess. I got it wrong and we lose. I turn to David and go "So what was it." "Iron." I blink at him, look at the card and then at the iron. "What? What's the train got to do with that!" "Well trains are metal and irons are metal." I nearly flipped the table! This is also the same guy who as the scientist in Deception somehow thought a good clue for a TROPHY would be the bathroom. We were all like. "What the hell was that? A pooping trophy? The world's biggest dump?!" We haven't let him live that one down. The pooping trophy is now legendary.

      David Allen
      I ran into this with Dark Moon. We had a mix of new players and players familiar with the game. Two new players ended up being infected. When it got to the last event, one was able to issue command and do the double-reveal. In the end, they lost; be but they complained heavily that there was no point in the information being hidden because they felt they were more likely to win if they revealed in the first round.
      I think hidden traitor games aren't for everyone.

    • @IJJusion

      Isnt the easy way to mess up the team, getting one of the relics then revealing yourself as the traitor? i.e getting the grail and encouraging someone to take a chance cause you can revive them then reveal yourself?
      or get excaliber and then reveal yourself etc etc.
      Yet to play as the traitor myself, but it seems like the best way to work towards your goal is to work with the team, but put yourself into the positions where you get a key reward.

    Diplomacy is the one game I will never, ever play again. The one time I played was a play-by-web game that went on for MONTHS, and when I was stabbed by my closest ally after we had been working in tandem for about two or three real-time months, I was actually disturbed by the depth of the emotional reaction I had. It was an anonymous game among a bunch of my friends, and I'm pretty sure if I had known who it was at the time, we would not still be friends today. The game went on for two or three more months after that, and I decided Never Again.

    Tops for my list is Risk Legacy. Nearly broke our game group. Nearly caused table flipping (not me). I spent one game totally checked out looking at my phone. From first play to the last it was 5 years, mostly because we kept avoiding the last game. We avoided playing even when we had all parties involved and even though the outcome was preordained - one person had won the majority of games, so whoever won wouldn't make a difference. The main issue for us was just getting the 5 of us together, which as working adults w/ families is difficult. When we finally got the game to the table, it took a lot of rules refreshing, which caused a lot of arguments when there were conflicting assessments of the rules. On top of that, I came into it 5 games or so from when they started, so the map was already modified enough and enough had gone on, where I wasn't even really in contention for anything. Overall the most frustrating (and rage inducing) experience I've had since getting back into this hobby.
