Awesome Becky! Welcome! I do have a couple of Stitch with Me videos where I show and talk about details of my sewing method technique. These are fairly recent videos, like in the last two weeks, and part of their name is Sewing Method Tutorial...or something like that. Lol.
Thanks for that great tutorial. I know how challenging it is to film and stitch at the same time. It's great to see how your colour choices are are showing on the piece.
I generally just wad it up with no forethought, which ends up with more wrinkles. eeek! I also do the sewing method slightly different - I start in the bottom left to top right to top left bottom right.
Thank you so much Jan for showing the Algerian stitch!!! It was a great angle and you made it look easy! I’m going to pull my project out today and give it a try!!! I’ll let you know how it goes!!!! Thank you!!! Hugs!!! 😀💕
A very interesting video I have never used the sewing method. I will have to try it. I have stitched for a long time so hard to teach a old stitcher new ways, not sure I could do it on linen.I love your videos. Take care............
Never hurts to try. And you may find that it just isn’t for you, and that’s fine, and then you’ll know. But really, if you’re happy with the way you stitch, this would be just for curiosity than anything else.
Your stitching is so pretty! Cat hair is a part of my everyday existence too-lol. I used to stitch in hand and went to hoops and Qsnaps. I don't know why I changed. I will try the hair clip idea for holding fabric. I've tried the clips that you would use to tie your hair up in the back and hold in place but they have plastic teeth and can leave a hole in the fabric. This might work better. Thanks for the stitch tutorial. I was wondering about that symbol right in the middle. You stay safe in the storm.
Thanks Mary! Yes, I used those hair clips to begin with, too, because that’s what I had. I realized very quickly that they weren’t good for the fabric, so yeah, these lightweight ones work well. Plus, I can use them to hold back my bangs when they are annoying me! LOL
Eyelets are fun to stitch. I would stitch more in hand but my little finger goes numb from gripping the fabric, a 6 inch hoop solves that and I can still use a sewing motion. Love your projects!
Thank you Jan. After watching you I see we stitch very similarly. I use safety pins to hold the rolled fabricg. by pinning up near the top and near the bottom. Not anywhere near I will be stitching. Thanks again
Thanks Jan! That Playing with Jax design is gonna be one of my next starts and I’m thinking about taking the little face off that center pumpkin and shading a little so that piece would be great for Thanksgiving too!
There’s actually an alternative chart in there for that pumpkin instead of using the face. I think it has leaves on it. That’s the one I’m going to do, too, instead of the face.
Thank you for this video, Jan. Do you ever encounter fuzzy stitches from handling your work when stitching in hand? I’m having a terrible and frustrating problem with this . . .
Great tutorial Jan! I thoroughly enjoyed it. I find I stitch a variety of ways depending on what I'm stitching though I do prefer stitching in hand. I did learn some new ideas though like the hair clips. Thanks for a great tutorial.
Jan, I love your Harbour Haven. I am considering stitching it over one as well just because it's so large. Your fabric is great for this piece, great colours, just wondering if you recall which fabric you used?
It is a 28 ct linen by Crossed Wing Collection. I don’t know the exact name of the colorway, but I know there are a number of people who got in touch with them to do a custom dye of whatever ct fabric they wanted for this. Hope this helps!
@@JanHicksCreates Thank you so much Jan, that's great to know. I've been eyeballing their fabrics and stalking their site for quite some time. I'm pretty sure your colour is "Sky" but I will check with them.
Your stitching is beautiful Jan! I need to practice practice practice stitching in hand. I love the freedom of not having hoops and stands and all that stuff and being able to just grab a project and start stitching. I know this is an older video but I'm catching up! On your Tis the season, are you using the called for colors? Your cardinal is a beautiful red!
Thank you! I agree, the freedom of stitching in hand makes it so much easier! I am not using the called for colors. I didn’t want to spend the money on silks, so I am using things I have on hand that are similar.
Great Tut Jan.. I would love to stitch in hand- but I found that because I tend to stitch on higher counts- it drove me bonkers- trying to get needle- up and over and still stay on top.. Make sense?? lol... And- I am a one x at a time girl- so I had to try and figure that out... Another dilemma for me- at least- was that I can't set still- so my lighting- is never good enough.. I stitch with a hoop- and my little hammerhead light clips on- and then- as I squiggle all over- my light goes with- lol.. Not for nothing- I am still going to keep trying- because it would be nicer to not have to "set up" every time I want to stitch.. :) Anywho- thanks for sharing!!!! Hugs!!! xoxo Niki
Yeah, having the hoop to put your light on would certainly help if you’re moving around a lot. I do stitch mostly on higher count fabrics, 32 ct probably being the lowest I prefer to use, and I think the manipulation of the needle is just another one of those learned skills. Practice makes perfect and all that! Also, I agree that doing a one 2 at a time can be a pain. I have learned where I have to go up and down, whether I’m moving to the left or right, to make it work. Maybe I need to do a video showing that kind of detail, too! Thanks for the idea! ❤️
I think if I could get a system- of doing a full x- at a time- I could do it- and get better- faster over time... I just ordered an extra table top ott light too- soooo- maybe if I drag that over by the edge- of my table- where I set- that will help??? Gonna play around with stufff... lol.. It's in my nature to do so!!! he he.. Thanks Jan!!! xoxo
I bit the bullet and ordered the pattern for this, having seen just how beautiful it is on yours and others' Floss Tubes (nice enabling, everyone!). I'm just waiting on my threads to arrive across the pond from Nancy, and have ordered some grey 40 count linen to try out. 32ct is my go-to linen, but I really want to try some higher count. Hoping everything arrives soon so I can get going with it!
I have a video in my Basics of Cross Stitch series called Transitioning from Aida to Evenweave Fabric. It is number 11 in the series. You can find the playlist here: Basics of Cross Stitch Playlist - ruclips.net/p/PL0eA4eAA6BH8DGxksLXEncpcjaK_KzXVV
Definitely! You may find that you have to do something to soften up the fabric a bit so it’s easier to hold in your hand, but it will soften naturally as you handle it more anyway. I say, give it a try and see what you think!
You make it look so easy thanks for sharing your talent
Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
Thank you for showing and explaining your stitching in hand. It is much appreciated! Jacque
You’re very welcome, Jacque! Glad you found this useful.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Love this design by Blackbird
Thanks for the tutorial. The Algerian Stitches look so easy now💕
Glad you found it useful, Michele!
Just discovered you via Pam and Steph. 😊 Love all your projects. I want to learn how to do the sewing method. Thank you for your videos!

Yes, it is a bit difficult to work around the equipment, thus my problem with bumping my phone holder! But I’m glad you found it useful!
That helped a lot! Thank you
Thank you for this great tutorial!! HAPPY STITCHING TODAY AND EVERYDAY!!
Thanks Karen! Happy stitching to you, too!
I loooooooove that you show us how to stitch (or show me rather)
Glad you are finding it useful, Tina!
Jan, I love your Indago Lane. The green is perfect. Thanks for sharing🤗 Kim
Thanks Kim! ❤️
Thank you I also stitch in hand, but never thought of hair clips to hold fabric. Have a great day!!!!
Glad you found a tip you can use! You have a great day, too!
Great informative video Jan. Thank you!
You’re very welcome, Janet! Glad you found it useful!
This was fun to watch, I also stitch in hand most of the time but it's always interesting to see how others do it!
Glad you enjoyed it! Do stitch pretty much the same way, with rolling your fabric like that, or some other method?
I generally just wad it up with no forethought, which ends up with more wrinkles. eeek! I also do the sewing method slightly different - I start in the bottom left to top right to top left bottom right.

What sort of linen are you using as it looks a lot heavier than mine & it looks really nice to stitch on. Love your work. Cheers 😊❤️🥰😍
I believe this was some linen from xJuDesign, probably 36 ct.

Hi Jan - lovely to see closer up on Tis the Season - I'm sure you've mentioned it before, but what count fabric are you using for it? Liz
Thanks Liz! It’s 36 ct linen from Picture this Plus, the color is Sterling.
Thank you x

Checked you website. Couldn’t find the red you used. Don’t believe you mentioned it in either Sept videos?
I used a red called Garden Rose. I believe it was also a Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe thread.
can you show us how to stitch on linen, I just cant seem to understand it ?!!!
Thanks for the tutorial. Did you use the called for thread colors?
No, I didn’t actually. I need to get that info up on my Color Conversion page on my website. I will try to get that done tomorrow and let you know.
Thank you, I really like the more vibrant colors you used.
Can you use Aida to sew in hand?
Definitely! You may find that you have to do something to soften up the fabric a bit so it’s easier to hold in your hand, but it will soften naturally as you handle it more anyway. I say, give it a try and see what you think!
