- Today’s video features GWR Castle Class 4-6-0 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe on Vintage Trains’ “The Shap Mountaineer” tour from Birmingham New Street to Carlisle via Wolverhampton, Stafford, Crewe, Warrington Bank Quay, Preston and up the WCML to Carlisle via Shap. Also featured is Britain Class Light Pacific 4-6-2 34067 Tangmere on the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express promoted by Railway Touring Company and operated by West Coast Railways. 5043’s train was hauled by a class 47 as far as Carnforth where it was detached to allow 5043 to run unassisted to Carlisle and then back to Crewe where the 47 was reattached. 34067’s tour originated in London Euston up the WCML with class 86 haulage as far as Carnforth where 34067 took the train to Carlisle and back over the S&C to Preston where the 86 returned the tour to London. With 2 steam locomotives over Shap in such a short amount of time, today was bound to be extremely bountiful, and so it was! This was also my first visit to the infamous 1 in 75 incline, and seeing a Great Western Castle on Shap was quite rare, as was a Bulleid Pacific really as neither locomotive would have gone near there in their working lives.
I left my local at 4:38 (although it actually left 45 late) and headed south to Manchester Victoria. I took a train then to Manchester Oxford Road and then to meet Luke @blackcountrysteamvideos8021 and Richard @harnettyrailways at Preston for the trip North to Penrith. The three of us took a taxi to Shap Wells and there we met @themodster, @EHSteamVideos, @danielstrainsukofficial9133, @FullSteamAhead and@thrailwayvideos5393. 5043 lost some time in Preston due to a medical emergency, however after a while it roared by, showing the North the true capability of a Great Western Castle! 19 minutes later 34067 Tangmere thrashed over Shap, albeit with heavy diesel assistance. Sadly during the wait Mountain Rescue had to be called for a man who was having some heart issues so I relly hope he makes a swift recovery! After this, a taxi ride back to Penrith allowed an excellent high speed shot of the Earl, whistling through as she began her Southbound ascent to Shap. Having boarded the TP service just behind the Earl, Luke and I overtook it and arrived at Lancaster, where a really close call with a 390 travelling the other way allowed us a great shot of it accelerating from a signal check at Hest Bank. After this we took another TP service down to preston for 34067's arrival, which was very busy! In the fray a walking stick ended up on the railhead on Platform 7, hopefully the 47 didn't run it over! After that I headed home.
Thanks to all who made this possible, the locomotives and crew, operators and promoters and the trains that got us where we needed! Thanks also to James the taxi driver for helping us out with Shap. Thank you also to my mates who kept me company all day, and to my wonderful secondary planner who again helped me with locations!! I hope you enjoy this as I did.
Super capture of two fine engines giving it some welly!
Thank you very much, and yes they sure were going for it, particularly 5043!! Regards, Dan

Dan, As an old saying goes, "the early bird catches the worm", is certainly apt with your video. I hope you enjoyed your long trip up north to record these wonderful sights and sounds. Regards, John
Well said John, thank you! Yes it was very early and I didn't enjoy that part much lol but it was definitely worth it. Regards, Dan
Glad you got the castle you wanted. I JUST MADE IT TO LEYLAND after catching Tangmere at Bamber Bridge. I'll be uploading it soon. What an effort the 2 locos were making. WELL DONE
Thank you very much mate and that must have been a really close one, I'm glad you made it! I'll check your video now. Regards, Dan
Another great day out Dan. Nicely filmed mate

I’ve been told that next week blue Peter is going to the Severn valley railway for testing which they’ll do the same with the Duke of Gloucester after she’s done with the overhaul and soon releasing them back out on the mainline
Yes it will Scott, this week I believe. Regards, Dan
@@crunchynutsteamfilms5043yes and I’ve caught her today during the early day of the testing check it out
Great video! shame it's the only time 5043 will come up North this year though.
Thank you very much! Yes the Castles aren't a regular sight up there but maybe Liverpool is sufficiently North for you to do an outing for it lol. Regards, Dan
Oh. So sharp is flat now?
Oh. Yeah I think it is. Regards, Dan
Oh i didn't have enough money to come to shap somone will have to buy my tickets for me ERKAYYYYY we where young
Lol. Thanks for your comment. Regards, Dan
Clun Castle, music to my ears. Tangmere, too quiet. I love to hear a steamy approaching from a good few miles away, although windy conditions can make it difficult to achieve. The owner of the walking stick should have been more careful, and kept a firm grip on it. You're a credit to the railway scene.
I agree 5043 is much louder than 34067 and in my view much better too. And the walking stick was a strange incident but its owner refused to speak to station staff about it. Thank you very much! Regards, Dan
