    GWR MINDBOGGLING POWER !!!
The "Cheltenham Flyer" was at its inception the Worlds fastest scheduled train. That title being based on the average speed required. Further the "Cornish Riviera" was the Worlds longest non stop run (Paddington to Plymouth during summer months only). Only possible thanks to water troughs being laid at roughly 50 mile intervals, something common in Britain, but not in the USA !!!
The Castle class was in 1923, technically more powerful than the LNER's A1 class Pacific's, based on tractive effort. The "most powerful" title then passed to the Southern's "Lord Nelson" class in 1926. But then reverted to the GWR "King" class in 1927. At over 40,000lbs of tractive effort the King Class was the only 4-6-0 type to be classified in the British Railways 8P power category. Itself an engineering feat, to pack so much power into such a small express passenger locomotive design. Indeed the 4i-cylinder "King" class steam locomotive has more "Horsepower" per ton of locomotive than the monstrous Union Pacific Railroads 4-8-8-4 Mallet type "Big Boy" class, claimed as the Worlds biggest steam type with around 7000hp !!!

Grossly americanised commentary. Collett is stressed on the first syllable not the last; loco numbers are read 'four, o, seven, nine' not 'four thousand, seventy-nine'. British locos, British accented narration, British audience. It all sounds bizarre! Get it sounding right. Otherwise, not bad. Oh, and William Stan-ee-ay? Who the hell was he?

Just a little background info.... While Charles Collett was C.M.E. of the GWR at the time of the Castle Class introduction, work on the design had begun during the preceding Churchward era. The No.7 type boiler was in production for the 4700 freight locomotives but would have limited route availability due to its weight therefore a slightly smaller design (No.8) had to be procured delaying the type's introduction.

A travesty of a history of this engine. The Castle was merely one of G. J. Churchward's STAR class (Churchward sadly not even mentioned) with a larger boiler and given a more enclosed cab. The idea it was new design is self-evidently just nonsense.

      Two reasons.
      1) Back in the nineteenth century the London and North Western.built some locomotives for the Lancashire and Yorkshire. The independent locomotive buliding firms kicked up a stink about the potential threat to their business, and a law was passed forbidding any railway company to build locos for another.
      2) The LMS loading guage was more restictive than the GWR's, and the Castles were too wide to run on the LMS.

Sir Felix Pole, Managing Director of the GWR at the time, insisted that the King Class locomotives had a tractive effort in excess of 40,000lb for publicity purposes. The resultant design required slightly smaller wheels to achieve this target. After the first five engines were built, the cylinder size was quietly reduced to 16" (from 16.25") thus dipping below the stated figure.
