On October 20, in the eastern section, considering the characteristics of the Indian army's deployment in the Kejielang area with heavy forces in the front and light forces in the rear and exposed flanks, the Tibet border guards adopted tactics of attacking from both flanks, making flanking and rear encirclements, dividing and encircling, and annihilating one by one. They concentrated their main forces and launched attacks on the left and right flanks of the Indian 7th Brigade, quickly occupying Qiangdeng, Kalong, Keningnai, Shaze and other places. With a part of the troops, in coordination with the Shannan Military Sub-region, they launched attacks on Cheguobu and Banggangding in the front of the Indian army. A part of the troops made a flanking attack on Zhangduo on the left rear. The Qamdo, Shannan, and Nyingchi military sub-regions each used a part of their troops to counterattack the enemy in front of them to cooperate with the main direction of operations.
The counterattack troops overcame natural obstacles such as high mountains, valleys, and dense forests, captured important strongholds of the Indian army in the Kejielang area, quickly disintegrated the Indian army's deployment, and the Indian army was routed. The Chinese border guards, in accordance with the orders of the Central Military Commission, advanced south of the "McMahon Line". On the 23rd, they occupied Tawang. In this battle, the Indian 7th Brigade was annihilated and some Chinese territory north of the Tawang River and south of the "McMahon Line" was recovered.
Under the situation of victory in the operations in the Kejielang area in the eastern section, on October 24, the Chinese government issued a statement putting forward three proposals of stopping the conflict, reopening negotiations, and resolving the border issue peacefully, and ordered the counterattack troops on the eastern front to stop pursuit.
The Indian government once again rejected this peaceful proposal, declared a national state of emergency, carried out war mobilization, and adjusted its deployment. By mid-November, the number of troops on the China-India border area had increased to more than 30,000. On November 11, 14, and 16, they launched a full-scale counterattack on the Chinese border guards. The Chinese border guards, in accordance with the orders of the Central Military Commission, once again launched counterattacks against the invading Indian army. The second stage of operations began on November 16 and ended on November 21.
In the Walong direction in the eastern section, a unit of the Tibet border guards launched a counterattack against the Indian 11th Brigade on the 16th and advanced to Jingudi on the 21st, approaching the traditional customary line. In the Xishan'kou-Bondila direction in the eastern section, considering the characteristics of the Indian army's linear deployment and heavy forces in the front and light forces in the rear, on the 18th, the Tibet border guards launched multiple attacks on the Indian army. On the 19th, they captured Bondila and immediately launched mopping-up and pursuit operations. On the 21st, all Indian army strongholds in the Xishan'kou-Bondila area were completely cleared. In the western section, from the 18th to the 20th, the Xinjiang border guards cleared all Indian army aggression strongholds in the Banongluo area.
The self-defensive counterattack on the China-India border lasted for one month. In the eastern section, the Chinese border guards advanced to the area south of the "McMahon Line" close to the traditional customary line. In the western section, all strongholds set up by the Indian army within Chinese territory were cleared. A total of more than 8,700 Indian troops were killed or captured, and a large amount of weapons, equipment and materials were captured.
On November 21, the Chinese government issued a statement announcing that the Chinese border guards would cease fire and withdraw along the entire China-India border. From December 1 to March 1, 1963, they withdrew to the area 20 kilometers north of the actual control line on the Chinese side as of November 7, 1959. Subsequently, the Chinese government returned a large amount of captured equipment to the Indian government and released 3,900 captured soldiers.
