- In Rochdale, Workers’ Party leader George Galloway lost the seat he won in a by-election earlier this year.
He was defeated by Labour's Paul Waugh. He did not take the stage for the announcement.

Rochdale did not have a voice in Galloway. It was a platform for his narcissistic tendencies because ultimately he is a self publicist. He used Gaza to drum up a sectarian vote, the likes of which would make parts of Northern Ireland shudder.
But looking at Galloways record over the last 20 years, it makes for some fascinating reading.
When he was MP for Bradford West, he had an attendance record of %11 over 3 years, making him one of the worst attended MP’s of the parliamentary term.
As MP for Bethnal Green, he had an attendance of %7 over 5 years. To give you some perspective, Bethnal Green was a London constituency, and he was permanently resident in London. He was one of 10 MPs with the worst attendance of the 2005-2010 parliamentary term.
Galloway only uses parliament as a platform for his personal interests, and barely even bothers to show up. Rochdale is better off without him, Parliament is better off without him. He can go back to his mansion at his country estate in Dumfriesshire and spend his evenings ranting and then blocking people on Twitter who disagree with him.
This is for Rochdale ! Not Gaza ! 🤣🤣

This bloke Waugh knocked on my door and didn't want to talk about policies at all - he just launched into a nasty character assassination of Galloway - so it's insincere of him to stand up and thank the man for his service - I'm not surprised GG didn't want to shake the man's hand after the bile that was poured out against him. Galloway's mistake was not to put in the hard effort to knock the doors all over town, day after day, in the old fashioned way, as Paul Waugh did. He only needed to have turned less than 750 Labour votes his way to have won but he failed to put in the effort or have enough presence outside of his core Muslim support areas.

George Galloway can now try as MP for Gaza North.
The new member for Rochdale will sit in parliament with just under 33% of the vote. That means 67% of voters, voted for other candidates. If compulsory preferential voting were to be used; then, only a candidate with 50% plus at least one vote would be elected. Sadly, with the current first past the post system democracy seems out of reach.
Exactly right, the first past the post election system is an archaic undemocratic voting system that favours the mainstream parties and denies all those voters who voted for alternative candidates any representation, its time the UK adopted proportional representation where parties achieving more than 5% of the vote are entitled to a representative MP.
Excellent point, and very sad. Ranked Choice Voting would fix that. (Is compulsory preferential voting the same as RCV?)

It's also interesting how the Liberal Democrats went from about 9 to 71. And SNP, against genocide, lost all but about 9 seats in Parliament. Note the outspoken critics of government lost but the moderate critics (i.e. Corbyn) won .

I am no fan of Nigel Farage, but I know a well informed, well honed politician when I see one. So that's an end to pro-Palestinian politics in Rochdale.
I'm in Rochdale and we were not happy with Mr Galloways lack of attendance to rochdale. Our most pressing issues were the cost of living, small businesses struggling and children's poverty. He mentioned these issues in Parliament but didn't even consult with the people affected here nor worked with the council for a strategy. He had 4 months to at least visit a handful of times but nope he was just pressing about gaza. People who are seriously struggling here do not think about gaza, they are needing relief quickly and he completely glossed over that or mentioned it in name only. Just because there are many Muslims here does not mean they will all vote for galloway and that not all voters here are Muslim! Conditions are too dire to be worried about foreign affairs here.
