It never really occurred to me that the building itself could be some sort of giant organism inside a metal armor, I mean, basically every combine modified creature is made like that. It's just the noises, in the beta at least, make it sound like something alive, it's creepy. Also, the movement of some parts, like those thin pieces in the middle, I don't know, makes it feel that it's more than just a structure

Like those yellow tubes conner mentioned for instance, this may be some kind of wiring system for the advisors living and working within it, like our neurons. So if anything, it may be more of a chassis, shell, or exoskeleton for those advisors. Like GladOS And aperature science. Also I know the citidel rooted deep within the ground, which is probably why it managed to keep working until you nuke it in hl2e2. Now to explain where I was coming from before in my previous reply: there is no direct flesh or blood, it's mostly metal and wiring, apart from those yellow tubes, making it easy to dismiss the fact it may have some amount of organics implamented within. Just letting you all know something that makes this scene infinitely more intimidating if you don't know already: See those birds flying away from the Citadel? Those aren't birds. Those are scanners/manhacks. At that moment, the Combine are sending hundreds of drones throughout City 17 to look for you.

There's no way it's scanners, I think they might be too big even for a chopper. The Citadel is a few kilometers high, much larger than Burj Khalifa - look at that and think how big a scanner would be next to it.

am i the only one who still even through all these years look at the citadel in HL2 and marvel at the size? it looks so good yet so terrifying at the same time.
Man... that first moment you come around that corner and hear that loud alarm go off and realize it's so strong it echoes through not only the whole city but all the way to the hills around it to realize " Okay… i guess this is not suppose to be part of the city " The hint without saying a word is what Half Life is always loved for and why Gordon never has to say a single word to make you feel fully immersed. The overwatch voice in the Gmod one cheapens the whole thing, but damn if it isn't scary lol. The Gmod citadel sound with vanilla HL2 overwatch voice would make the entire thing scary as fok.

I donno, I really like the normal one because of the size of it, and how you can see City Scanners just pour out all over the city. As much as I like the edition of the voice, I wish they just mechanized a normal female voice, and didn't just use the standard TTS female voice.
I'm here just after playing some Half-Life 2: VR mod, and seeing the citadel in VR was like seeing it for the first time ever, I was absolutely stunned by the scale of it all. And even though I've played hundreds of hours of Half-Life, this was the first time I actually stopped and looked at the citadel for a little while taking in all the details and animations and it was breathtaking.
The Half Life 2 view of the citadel is best because the lack of mechanical sounds give it a grander sense of scale and distance, plus the thousands of scanners flowing out of it makes it look like spores flowing out of a mushroom which gives an organic and rooted vibe to the citadel. Valve knew what they were doing when it came to art direction in video games. You can see the question "What would a gigantic mechanical tower like the Citadel sound like in full alert if you were 5 km away?" answered with what we see, and the result is grand, muffled and truly punishing, you know Gordons random appearance in the office unintentionally shook the fuck out of the hornets nest by the very core of its otherwise grand and menacingly mountainous existence. The whole context is what makes this experience mightier overall. Like David staring at raging Goliath in the distance. In the Gmod map, sound is projected cleary and immediatly, as if you were standing right next to it or inside, which cheapens the whole experience. Sound muffles the more distant from the source you are and here the sound is very clear and direct, which makes it seem just more like a sound effect that has been added, also because we can see that even though we are closer, the object is still quite far away. It doesn't really make that much sense and if I would want to suggest a different sound, it would be an interpretation of the regular alert sound only how it would sound if you were 500m away. In short it would be with more slight details like metallic ressonating sounds and just way louder because you are being blared right in the head by it. And the structures opening would be a low delayed machine revving sounds.

The added detail of the birds flying away is missed on the improved version, it just gives it that unnatural feeling and underlying terror that the Citadel conveys.

Even if it is far away, you can tell its scanners from the fact that a whole bunch appear when you are past that scene, as the citadel is on full alert and would be looking for you which, the best way would to be releasing a full horde of scanners all over the city to look for you. We can only see a couple of helicopters so we can tell right there they didn't release a whole lot of choppers
