You never forget the first time you hear a song that changed the course of your life.
After my ex and I broke up, I stuck around for MONTHS hoping that she'd come back around. I was doing it for the kids. I had vows to honor. I wanted to continue building a life that we had started and shared together and sacrificed so much for.
A hell of a lot went to shit and the bottom fell out in early February. My ideations had gotten unbearable and I realized I needed to take my life back.
I started dating and doing things for myself again.
I set up my first post-ex date. I remember having a lot of mixed feelings as I wandered through Kohl's looking for a fresh outfit for the occasion. Half of me was talking myself out of doing this, half of me was pumping myself up to be the champion I was born to be, but in reality I was just fighting back tears while I looked at Hawaiian shirts.
Wasn't the first time, won't be the last.
Anyway, I was really dialed into listening to a song on the store system that I caught halfway through, so I was lucky enough to catch this one from the very start. I remember going into the dressing room so I could hear it a little better, and, my God, did that do something to me.
The waterworks opened up, but honestly, so did my heart and my mind. I don't know what it is about this tune, but it gave me a shot of confidence, rizz, and self-empowerment that took months to wear off, and set me down a whole new music and self-discovery path that I'm still vibing on today.
That date didn't work out, and neither did the next 27 (I need to stop counting). I keep losing the spark that was lit in me that day, and the fight to be the person I visualized myself becoming this spring gets harder as time passes.
But MAN, if I need help summoning that badass dad who stood up and said "No. Fucking. More" on February 14th, 2022 - I throw on the Natalie Prass album The Future and the Past and SCREAM along to "The Fire."
I applaud you sir. I wish you fortune in your endeavors.

I love that they carved out all these figures from Mount Rushmore or from brute rock just for this clip.
This is an actual place in Virginia. The heads were originally going to be part of some presidential themed amusement park but it got scrapped, so the giant busts are just sitting in a lot that anyone can go to.
