LOVE the ending where Mike talks about the HFG he has going thru the book. We NEED a LOT more of that! Not just his book but HFGs tackling these difficult theological/bibliological subjects.
Another good video. I'm still working my way thru Mike's book. Both are doing a great job here fleshing out the controversy and problem surrounding the term Inerrancy. SO MANY tremendous and stupendous questions/problems arise. Take Normal Geisler for example. Who can argue that he wasn't one of the GOAT theologians in history? And yet the host and Mike expose the inconsistency in his argumentation for Inerrancy. I don't see how anyone can defend Divine Dictation today. I have no doubt that some of the errors, for example like the ones mentioned in Chronicles and Kings, can be easily explained away. Anyone who has done a Chronological Reading Plan for reading the Bible thru in a year, I would imagine has seen the numerous recording of the same event in both books. So it doesn't take a huge leap to believe that the "contradiction" is a simply scribal error. And doesn't the obviousness of that point right back to the Providence of God that He would give us both?! I don't agree with Mike at this point that the majority of the phrase "word of God" applies to the Apostles teachings. I will have to do a study on that one thing and that alone is gonna take some time. The phrase is used 50x in 49 verses so it will take a concerted effort to exegete each and then categorize them into what the phrase means. That said, I think the phrase is the syllogism Mike cites is meaning Scripture. IOW, the Bible. Though even those two being synonymous is debatable. Which Bible? I know I've heard Mike say he's a Historian and not a Theologian and he comes from a historical POV. Which is GREAT in itself but I can't help but wonder if he's not missing some theological aspects because of that. For example, God never says that the Word of God as delivered by a man is inerrant/infallible. He never even refers to that as Theopneustos. But He DOES refer to Scripture as such. And I'm believing more and more that is the essential element that folks are missing. It is the Scripture, the "graphe", that is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword. I also realize that "Word of God" in Heb. 4:12 is debatable. But this is where I think one has to put on their theologians cap and not just look at it from a historical POV. I am believing that God draws a direct connection between The Word (Jesus) and The Word (Scripture) in 2nd Tim. 3:16 by telling us that it is the Scripture that is "God-breathed". That it is the "graphe" that is living and powerful and sharper than a two-edged sword. And that The Word can NOT be separated from His Word. The symbolism between the two can't be missed. I would further submit that while living and breathing on their own, they ONLY give life and breath to those which the Holy Spirit then imparts to them. IOW, for the Believer to understand and rightly divide them he MUST be walking in the Spirit seeking to understand what God says and not looking for something to justify what he already believes. And for the Unbeliever to understand them, he must be seeking God with his whole heart and a desire - a real hankering - for the Truth. Again, not just to serve his own purposes but to more than anything want to the Truth. That explains to me why some can read the Bible and 1) Never see what it says, 2) See nothing but contradictions and nonsense, or 3) Have a light bulb moment when the Truth sets them free.
Really enjoyed this discussion, Dr. Licona! I'm reading through Why Are There Differences in the Gospels and have purchased the new book as well. I look forward to finishing them both!
You keep repeating the error that there were only 3 framers of the CSBI. It is categorically false to keep repeating that claim, especially after it has been pointed out to you. For example, some of these figures who were framers and signers include: Greg Bahnsen, James Boice, Norman L. Geisler, John Gerstner, Carl F. H. Henry, Kenneth Kantzer, Harold Lindsell, Roger Nicole, J. I. Packer, Robert Preus, Earl Radmacher, Francis Schaeffer, R. C. Sproul, and John Wenham.
Licona has a discussion of John Poirier's monograph, _The Invention of the Inspired Text: Philological Windows on the Theopneustia of Scripture_, in an appendix in _Jesus Contradicted. Poirer's book is influential to Dan McClellan's thinking, but Licona addresses some methodological concerns with Poirier's thesis.
Thank you, Brothers 🌹🔥🌟🔥🌹

The best interview on inerrancy! So rich.

“We’re not trying to pick on Geisler”
You mean the way that Geisler picked on others???
True.
