I remember going away to work in Egypt and all the locals there because I was English were calling me Micheal Owen 😂 because that’s what they related England with back in 2001. When Owen broke through at 17/18 he was the clostest player to R9 in the world, that is why he won the ballon d'or, going to Real Madrid ruined him because they played him left wing to fit him in with the galaclto's, then injuries ruined his career.

He therefore slowly devolved to mediocrity since he knew no other way to play, unlike other speed demons in their prime like Arjen Robben and Cristiano Ronaldo. Other speedy players knew other styles besides racing at defenders and leaving them in the dust and scoring, while poor Michael Owen only knew that one way. Poor guy even hired speed trainers, but his legs never allowed it again. I blame Liverpool and also Real Madrid for not fully developing him and overusing him in his youth and completely blowing his legs out. He could have been a legend and a world-class player, talked about for generations to come, if only he had better managers, in his formative phase. 😪

Think the defence was a lot more physical then than now. We’re many players scoring 25/30 goals. We did a lot of excellent strikers back then, Shearer, Cole, Owen, Ferdinand, Phillips, Sutton to name a few

Once that was lost he ended up at Newcastle where he averaged 8-9 goals a season. Fowler and him had very identical goal ratio too.
And because he's an Englishman younger that 80 years old he won, internationally, absolutely nothing, zero, zilch, bugger all. Might as well not have bothered pulling on a white shirt.

Very good player but don't be comparing him to Mbappé. Owen went to Real Madrid and was crap. For England and Liverpool, never won the biggest honors and never really got close. Had scary Pace at one stage but once that went, he wasn't same danger at all.

Prime Owen was a nightmare for defenders. He was super fast, quick, can dribble and can finish well.
He could run fast in a straight line. Not the trickiest player. Never cut it in the UCL
