Loving your videos. Sounds like you're from the West Midlands, I'm from West Bromwich myself although I've lived in Lincoln for the last 20 years. (I'm 64 now) just starting a self build and finding your videos really helpful. Thanks. Enjoy your future ventures 👍
I really genuinely needed the assurance you gave at the start that its all okay I just fitted mine the other day and its leeked and it felt the end of the world but after checking this video i do feel assured i can handle it and fix it now, Thank you
Hope you sort out your own issue! Worse case scenario it's about £60 to get a professional to do it so don't stress it if you can't sort it yourself, though I reckon you've got this. 🙂🙌
Thank you for being honest, it makes a refreshing change to see that not everything goes smoothly but you persevere and show others how to work through it. Great video
Great video. It helped me make an informed decision regarding my leaking factory fitted window. I bottled it and called in the professionals....didn’t want to keep getting up every 5 minutes when it next rained when we are in the camper!
Had the very same problem with my Boxer rear windows..that i installed myself ( 1st time ever...nerve wrecking eh lol ) Went down the sealant along the top route.. did the job..side windows were fine thank goodness. But great vid ..and useful tips...going to keep a bot of Capt Tollys onboard. Cheers from Ireland 🙂
It's always those damned rear windows isn't it! Ah well, we live and we learn. Glad you managed to get yours sorted too. I think that Captain Tolley's stuff is brilliant stuff. Well worth keeping some on the shelf in case of emergencies. 🙂
Great to see the leak is fixed!! As you have said in the video, the bead of mastic was a bit uneven and thin when you did the first fix of your rear window glass... The depth of mastic used by kiravans was delivered using a ‘v’ in the nozzle which creates an even depth and broad line of mastic against the van body. This will give you a better bond with the glass pressed onto the mastic as it will broaden out and fill any potential unevenness. Well done and great advice to anyone looking to fit their own windows 😎👍✅
Thanks for the knowledge bomb Andrew! 🤯😁 When we applied the mastic to the side windows we did a much better job of the bead but still not perfect in our eyes even though the windows are perfectly watertight. We wanted to try to do it ourselves and think we nailed it apart from the mastic application. We know better for next time thanks to our self analysis and advice from folk like your good self. We only hope this video can help others avoid some pitfalls or needless worry. 🙂👍
@@PilgrimPods it’s so well worth watching your video, it’s a great pointer to folk wanting to do the best job they can on what many see as only possible by professional fitting services. For the nervous that may be the best option, but as you have shown, you can do it yourself 👍✅
Great video, been thinking of doing the van side windows myself like you did on my next van. After seeing your video tonight. Will have my windows done by a professional. Watched most of your videos, loved everyone of them. Can’t wait to see your next one
Yeah it doesn't appear to cost a great deal more to get them fitted professionally and it gives you peace of mind they're correct. I'd certainly fit them myself again as I now 100% know what I'm doing but I could have saved myself a lot of time and stress first time around paying to get them done... 😖 Best of luck with the new van when you get it! 🙂👍
I've just ordered windows the same as yours tinted by van pimps, now I'm feeling a little nervous about a faulty opener. also, I will use some professionals to fit them thanks for a great bit of information
Great video and really helped me. I do have captain Tolleys which I do rate for those tiny cracks but really liked your method to repair the leak with sealant. I have since then done this also as I am determined to teach myself new skills. keep up the great work
Just did a hose-test ,after fitting my windows yesterday.... breaking out the Sikaflex this morning 😔 Thanks for the video Craig, always good to know you’re not the first having same issues.. Kiravan video was excellent, but getting a bead like that is it a lot harder then it looks 😅
If we ever fit windows again we'll be buying a better gun to make life easier and give us the best chance of getting it right first time. Good luck sorting it out. Running a bead across the top edge whilst not ideal sorted ours just fine and you can't see the fix so would never know it's there.
Cheers for posting this. Got similar leaks in 2 of my windows. I believe the problem it due to pin holes in the adhesive due to the bead not being one complete bead like in your video. If I ever fit windows again I’ll definitely get an electric gun for the sealant. Going to try option 2 and if I’m not happy I’ll look at removing and refitting
Captains Tolley's has some cracking reviews (as we're sure you're aware having bought some yourself) and we're almost certain had the gap been only a hairline it would have done the job. What the Captain failed at the mastic sorted though. Good luck sealing your own! 🙂🙏
I’ve just fitted a window today and followed the Kirivans tutorial. I’m just baffled how the window actually stays in ? I’ll be removing the tape tomorrow and driving to work so hopefully it don’t fall out
Thanks for taking the time to check our stuff out and we're chuffed you find it inspiring. All the best for if and when you do start your own project! 🙂👍
Really helpful. Had a guy do my window last week. We've had heavy rain and it's leaked in a pretty big way. I know I should go back to him but it's Christmas Eve and he's 20 miles away plus we go into tier 4 on Boxing day. Think I may have to do it myself. At least I know how. Thanks
Sorry for the late reply but we kinda switched off from all things van related over the festive period. Sucks to hear you've had issues with a newly fitted window by a professional and we hope you've got it sorted now. Happy New Year!
We're cracking on with the insulation at the moment but want to give the inner cills a little TLC and waxoyl. Will hopefully have the stage finished this weekend and we can then focus on the floor and ceiling. Slowly coming together. 😊👍
Hey mate, I'm documenting my entire build so will upload my progress as I make it. The festive season and poor weather has slowed me down a bit but I hope to crack on with the build very soon!
Hey thanks for this video! I just installed a window and have a small leak that drips in only one area so I just tried method two (adding more sikaflex) hopefully that will make it water tight, if not I'll remove window and re apply with a better caulk gun (mine is 10:1 advantage, I read 12:1 is the min recommended for polyurethane). I believe it's because it was so hard to get out I had uneven bead.
We live and learn hey... Glad I attempted ours and would definitely do so again with lessons learned and more confidence. Hope you've made that window watertight mate. 🙂🤞
Hello and good morning. Is the Puraflex 40 as good as Sikaflex 521? Is there many difference between them? Price wise? Greetings. In your Van I see the plastic trim on the B pillar, also on the roof between the B pillars. the cover I mean; where did you got them? Greetings.
If you look at the properties of the two they're pretty much the same stuff only Sikaflex is a lot more expensive. The trim came with the van when I bought it. Because it was a PDSA van I don't believe it had the metal bulkhead and left the factory with the plastic finishing trim in its place. 🙂👍
Hi, good honest video here. From what I can see, I have the same side sliding windows on my boxer as yours. Though I had mine professionally fitted. The bond to the body is well sealed, but I am getting leaks though the sliding mechanism. Have you experienced this? There are drain runners on the back side of the glass, but I seem to get water between the body and the glass, the wrong side of the drain channel... On top of the main bonding bead basically... Any ideas before I start taking it apart??
Hi Rob, sorry for the slow reply... I haven't experienced that issue personally and wouldn't know how to rectify it. What I would say though is I'd definitely be taking it back to the window fitters to sort out as it could be an error on their part. Then again just like in my video you may have fell unlucky and purchased a dodgy window and if that's the case I'd be chasing up whoever I purchased it from to replace and cover the cost of removing the old and fitting the new (if memory serves, ours cost £60). Hope you get it sorted mate and thanks for taking the time to check our video out. 🙂👍
Additional tip: Take a can of compressed air and flush out all the water behind the glass before applying the sealant. That way no water is trapped behind the window.
Me and my dad put a window in and bodged it good and proper. Washed the van and it leaks really really bad. Think we will just pay someone to do it instead
We live and learn hey mate. 🍻 After having a couple of issues our end I think I know all the mistakes to avoid now and if I was to build another campervan would definitely tackle the windows again with what I've learned. Now if I messed those up I'd pay for someone else to do them in the future! I guess the thing is, it's not that more expensive to pay someone to fit them for you and if there's an issue it's then on them to sort. 🙂👍
The instructions that came with my bonding kit were so incredibly WRONG that I ended up doing a complete balls job on my own windows (much worse on the first) Basically telling me to put the adhesive on the window and not the van, so when I went to put it on it was in the wrong place, also absolutely no indication that the adhesive had to be 20-25 C or it simply will not come out of the tube. So yeah, really bad job on one side, fairly annoyed at the manufacturer giving instructions of such poor quality. So bad I would consider it grossly negligent tbh. I'll do my best to tackle it with some sealant and more bonding, but I wouldn't be surprised if I have to remove the window completely and do it again. Hopefully I can jerry-rig a solution together... At least this video gives me some hope! Although to be fair I actually think my situation is way worse... ugh
Heresy! I don't drink milk, at least not cow's anyway. Since I've turned 40 I find it no longer agrees with me. It's just not the same in a brew but I suffer almond milk now... Thanks for watching Greg. 😊👍
@@PilgrimPods when you turn 64, you'll need the calcuim for your bones. i didn't mention what milk :) mind you, you also need a van to build a campa to eh!
The only way to fix leaking windows is to remove them and refit with a better bond line. Having seen your install video I'm not surprised they leak, your urethane application was terrible. Your fix will only be temporary, the bond will fail over time and you'll be back to square one.
