  • After a stressful night as a line cook, Benjamin woke up with his heart racing. For the first time in his life, he had a sleepless night. Little did he know at the time that he was going to face an intense struggle.

I was here about a year ago. Going days and days of no sleep. I honestly had no hope. I thought I was going to go crazy if not drop down and collapse. I never imagined life will ever be the same again!! I want to tell anyone suffering that there is hope;Don't despair and don't fear. Please you will come out of it and it can't make any sense right now bur when I started sleeping again;I couldn't understand how it was even possible! Keep hoping

Daniel, you saved my life! I'm 72 years old and been suffering for insomnia almost 40 years, even sleeping pills didn't help. Now I am titration the pills and haven't stress about sleeping since I follow your advice. Thank you so much!

Dear Benjamin, this video is already a couple months old but know that it is helping people to this day to hear your story and your insights. It was a very welcome reminder, as today some sleep anxiety creeped up again, since I've got a cold and started thinking that "I need to sleep, otherwise my body will be messed up". Your "Sleeping is like Breathing" and "I can do anything I want despite of having slept little" made me much more relaxed.
On another note, I really appreciated your kind, reflected and calm way of sharing about yourself. May you be well!

I understand and acknowledge that insomnia can only go so far and after a few days your body steps in and conks you out. My personal limit is 1 to 2 nights of no sleep, and then by the next night I drop off like a log. What drives me anxious is the fatigue and brain fog that you feel in between while waiting for the next reset. If only there was an easy way to distract myself from all that pain.

I just wanted to say regarding the end moment where people look back and say to themselves the advice they'd give now -which is almost always not to worry, to stop looking for 'threats', to let go, to stop putting so much pressure on ourselves, be kind, relax, trust etc etc..... but of course in reality at the time we are going through this it IS a process, not a flick-switch (though it can be but often has to be revisited & gone through more thoroughly) and that it is often two steps forward one back, that it is a gradual letting go of the v powerful urge to control, relearning, building trust -it all HAS to take time.... but yes, if we at least could pop back in time and say -it WILL get better...have a little faith that it will...as you come to allow these improvements to naturally occur...and that we could have relieved and comforted our v stressed selves wracked in survival mode at the most challenging times of our lives...(and that could sound dramatic but I do believe facing our own fears IS the hardest thing in life and that issues with sleep add a particularly urgent and painful twist)

I LOVED this Benjamin story, how recognizable it is. I identified a lot with him!
And, Neil, once and for all, *WRITE THAT BOOK!* I'm Brazilian and I promise to translate it into Portuguese and Spanish! (I also believe that I can do it, despite being my second language.) You can mark my words! Consider that you already have a guaranteed translation in these languages as an incentive.

I can relate to everything he is saying! I have had insomnia for 3 years. I have gone to many doctors and did 3 sleep studies. I was prescribed all the sleep medications and herbs. Did sleep hygiene. Nothing worked. Drs told me you will sleep. You can’t go without sleep for very long. When I told them how much I was sleeping each night. They told me. You are sleeping more than you think you are.

It’s been three weeks now and since I went on a trip away and couldn’t sleep there, my fear has been bought back home with me. Some nights I’ll sleep normally but wake up in a panic and some nights I’ve been getting 3/4 hours. I’ve started herbal medicine and promethazine but feel so much guilt taking it. I’m worried I’ll become too dependent. Also the stress of work hasn’t helped and all I can think about is how much sleep I’ll get that following night. I’ll definitely try take this advice in not putting so much pressure on sleeping

    Hi Daniel…
What I can correlate in my condition to Benjamin condition is this feeling of traumatizing and feeling shocked ,as If you remember me I was one of early community members here in the channel , where I almost cures my insomnia between march-April 2020 ,
And before 2 weeks I read an article discussing that people with ocd will not recover 100% and then I was have had my first sleepless night in 2 years ,however we all here have the knowledge of how to coup with such situation ,but my struggle now that now ,I am having the fear if I go to bed and do not sleep in less than 30 minutes or 1 hour I will not sleep or I will get fragmented sleep ,even though as I remember during this 2 years when I was in such similar situation I was able to get sometimes decent 6 hours of sleep ,but as I feel this was also due to my complete abandonment of stimulus control when I do not sleep ,because If I get out of bed I will keep thinking about and how I need to go back to bed ,so eventually I ended up with being more anxious, because I will get out of bed for maximum 10 minutes and then go back to bed ,but without being sleepy enough, what do you think is better to be done in your opinion?, maybe I believe I need to get out of my comfort zone and be out of bed for as long as it may take to me to feel good ,what do you think about that?
Thank you in advance for your continued support .

From all these success stories, it seems as though insomnia is a mental problem. But it’s more complications than that. Often it’s caused by low GABA, which is difficult to treat. So a mental solution isn’t always the answer. It’s too simplified.

Ive gone weeks with decent sleep then all of a sudden when I am not stressing about it, it happens again, although it is always in the back of my mind, I just want to go back to jumping in bed and sleeping without even acknowledging what if and hope I sleep well etc etc

Just wondering why all these guests are of a similar age? Very few people over 50ish

      Hi,
We have Pauline and Pam who have been guests and are a bit older, but you’re right, most guests are below 50. This I think is partly because younger people tend to look more on social media, but maybe even more so because they’re more comfortable being on video. Our older students tend to not want to be guests! But I’m very aware and always try to find guests from all backgrounds 🙂
