being 6'6 but weighing 190 pounds I constantly had to fight shorter guys who have tons of tricks to close the distance and they got great technical advice from their corner and all I got from my corner was ''keep up with the jab''.

    • @tomnaughadie
      @tomnaughadie Год назад +43

To be fair, at 6'6" you'd be fighting mostly shorter fighters at any weight class.😂
I'm almost 6'5" and just barely made it up to 160 from the longest time at 130.
      Still working on those gains.
You're right though, there's a very few generic "tips" for tall/taller fighters and that's generally all we get.
      Peace, my brother in height.

I am 6'0" at 155lbs, and usually considered one of the taller, longer guys in my gym. Ive been training/sparring about a year now, so while i am still very new i hope i can give some advice or stuff ive been working on.
Main thing for me recently has been control using my lead arm. Theres the obvious stuff like jabs and feints to maintain distance or use to hand trap and frame. But another thing i think gets overlooked, especially by tall guys, is to take advantage of your opponents posture and position using that lead hand reach advantage.
For example, if we are in that middle range, i can use straight punches to get opponents guard up and have them plant their weight, then use a lead "hook" to shift them into a kick/or to cut an angle to get out of a corner/or even just to reset and get back to a longer range.
The same idea of breaking posture applies for when the shorter opponent does get inside. I can use that lead arm frame to push down and break their posture, allowing me opportunities to counter or disengage.
You dont have to be stronger than the opponent either for this to work. If their base is really solid and you cant quite move them with your control, then just use the control to keep them in place and move yourself around them. In this way i feel like it should also work for the taller guys who like to use footwork and maintain distance, not necessarily stay in the pocket or clinch.
I think this gets overlooked by taller guys because we always get told "use your reach advantage. Stay long range. Work the jab and teep." Which kind of translates to "stay away from them. Dont get physical at all." But the reality is that shorter guys will almost always eventually get inside on you. So as a taller guy this type of control/framing and breaking posture or directing the opponent is what has helped me survive when that does happen

I'm taller, but not super tall (6'1") and even though most people think that tall guys should prefer the outside range, I find the best things about being taller happen in the clinch. Longer reach means I can initiate the clinch from distances and angles that surprise smaller guys. It also means I can lead with a trap with less risk, my knee strikes reach higher and farther, my frames and plum have more leverage, and my elbows have more crash.

I can't find any information on it.
      I'm a 6'4" and I used to wrestle.
So I feel comfortable in close range where I can grapple and manipulate the body of shorter guys.
I wanted to incorporate some striking in close range into my game because it seems like it would fit the best.
But I can't find any info on it.
It's always: "keep them far" and "jab jab jab"

Trap the hands frequently. Their reach is less so you can trap to strike and they can't take advantage of the openings because their reach is shorter. Use the trapping to close for knees and clinch. Use the shoulder during arm extensions to block the face and add an inch or two to reach. Learn to quickly cover your open lead side of the body. Learn to quickly check on the lead leg to nullify inside and outside legs kicks during jabs and forward movement. Use the teep on their lead leg to break timing and rhythm during their forward movements. Adapting this to equal height and taller is challenging.

I get why people make tips for "the little guy," but given weight divisions it's actually a trade off advantages between the taller and shorter fighters in a division.
It also kinda makes sense at first thought for self defense, but short guys probably start more fights than tall guys.
Helping "the little guy" should be based on weight.
Height based tips, tactics and strategies should be thought of and taught equally from both perspectives.

I’m not sure if I fractured something or just sprained it - haven’t been to the doc yet, but it didn’t swell I think.
