The move is done and I'm back to regular scheduling . Please enjoy this episode!
yessss
back to regular monday vids
good to see you back mate
Hope everything went well. Nice to hear you are back!
This was so boring
Welcome back, hope the move went well.
I'm definitely jumping on this when the public release comes around. I didn't have an Xbox Live subscription on my original Xbox when I was a kid, so it'll be great to finally play some of my favorite games online!
SAME
Same 2
I didn't even have internet in 2003 lol.
@@husky3g Yeah, I didn't either. The only exposure to the internet I had as a kid was when I stayed the night at my grandmother's house. She had one of those atrocious 56k dial up modems, so it took like ten minutes just to load a single website. It seems like a distant memory, I'm spoiled by 200Mbps now.
Same man, same!
Mondays haven't felt right without the MVP MVG, and what great video to return on - love seeing talented folk out there reviving old services like this
Definitely was a fun and useful test all around, had a good time with it this weekend! New setup is looking nice so far 😁
Lucky you. Lol
Hey 👋 Thank you for all your RUclips videos, very helpful 🙏
I saw you in the lobby and I was like "eeeyyyy I know that guy from the internet!" LOL I've used your guides exclusively since I got back into older consoles. Used to be on the scene forums so I gotta say, simple video tutorials are a god send as I continue to advance in age.
Thanks for helping me get CFB Revamped set up
I can't wait to see PS Home come back one day, it'll be the only reason I add a ps3 to my shelf
It was great being able to play with you! CounterStrike was a lot of fun too. Even Im surprised how well things worked given how we pushed the service, we had players in US, Canada, UK, and Germany I believe.
Hey is the South Park xbox guy
Counter strike on xbox was surprisingly fun. Played it way more then I thought I would.
Hopefully you guys will have some closed beta builds for small audiences to try out in the future, I definitely want to experience these OG xbox games online with no issue.
Absolutely incredible! Your and others videos inspired me to purchase a Halo Edition Xbox to mod it after seeing how accessible it is with everything being open source and it was so fun! First time ever replacing thermal pastes or removing a clock Cap so i was nervous but it is up and running with XBMC and XBMC Emustation. I just finished last week (though i still need to upgrade the hard drive) and seeing that xbox live might be possible someday and maybe soon is so unexpected and exciting. I am looking forward to supporting them and hopefully seeing you all online sometime soon!
I broke my Halo Edition hard drive trying to mod it and don't have the equipment needed to repair it. Hoping I can find a way to do that before this service launches.
@@newnavy2211 It can be recovered. Try searching the forums.
@@michigansoundwizard I have. I just don't have the needed equipment.
@@newnavy2211 there is so many ppl on the groups offering send in services
@@newnavy2211 I made my own eeprom reader for super cheap and was able to read the eeprom from the motherboard. I'm a crazy noob when it comes to that stuff, if I could do it, you can do it!
What a time to be alive, I'm 22, never had a gaming console or much of a PC in my childhood or teenage years. Got broadband in 2017, bought my first console in 2020 which are literally two XBoxes one Japanese Crystal and one Normal EU Black one. I thought of trying Online for games but obviously it wasn't there as I learned, and now we're seeing this. Damn I would really enjoy trying this out. Can't imagine what Nostalgia trip people would be going over now.
Edit : Typo.
Have you done any modding?
2017? Holy shit where do you live?
It’s blowing my mind.
That's pretty cool. I was a young child when many of these games were in the mainstream so I never got to play many of them online. I'll have to try it out when it's publicly available.
Might be another year or two
@@teneesh3376 we'll wait
The original xbox live was such a special experience, it was like the wild west, it was new to pretty much everyone using it so there was this energy and excitement you'd get from everyone you ran into with a mic
Timesplitters: Future Perfect mapping is gonna make a comeback. :D That level editor along with the multiplayer is stupid fun to use and play...
No you weren't. No one was a young child. I'm not old, you're old.
One thing I was hoping you'd mention is how PSO is going to be crossplay with GameCube servers. I feel like that's kinda a big deal considering it'll probably be the only game to do so.
Not sure if it’s possible since the Xbox version of PSO was pretty much tied to Xbox Live.
@@Killatia It's been tested on the major 2 private servers, actually. Crossplay is possible with server wizardry, and it's fairly stable as of now
This would make my year
You can actualy see/talk to gamecube users whilst playing the dreamcast version but I don't think you can play with them.
XBOX version is tied to xbox live but its good to see it come back, sadly I doubt there will be cross play with other servers. Ephine doesnt have or support xbox or any other console. Schtserv is apprently open to supporting them all but xbox version as i said is locked behind XBL, the team on schtserv would need to find a way to incorporate that.
wow, somehow I still feel like the 00's happened just yesterday :) 20+years have passed since the Xbox/PS2 glorious days...so hard to believe...
Time flies when you're having fun..
@@kenrickeason Sure does
That's young! My 1979 Intellivision is 43 years old. 😁
Nothing makes you feel old like going to play Prince of Persia on Steam and the graphics which still aren't that great in high resolutions make the cutscenes look like shit in comparison and the cutscenes used to look amazing. Would have helped if they weren't pre-rendered but then they wouldn't have looked as good back then.
Feel you man i get stuck in sad nostalgic thoughts lol. I'm 34 and very glad I got to enjoy the nes to current gen. The ps2 days were the best.
I miss the OG Xbox live days. This seems really cool
not really.

This is really awesome to see. I never had an Xbox when I was a kid so I never had a chance to try Xbox Live back then.
I can’t wait for the public launch, because I’ll be all over it once it happens.
I started my online gaming in the 360 era, had dial up and didnt know bout online features until 360. played games since 92. So im actually legit hyped! im gonna prolly try this out! thanks for letting us all know!
I've never played on any of Microsoft's consoles but love to see a piece of gaming history preserved.
Cool! The Insignia project reminds me of Escargot, which is a similar project but for MSN Messenger (and is one of the ways I chat for fun from my vintage PCs).
Good to hear about the move. Glad you are back! Thanks for the video
It'll be awesome to eventually get Burnout 3 & Revenge playable on this. They were one of the few games that lacked system link completely, so an Xbox Live replacement would be the only real way to play them online again.
Burnout and Chaos Theory alone would be worth it
Burnout 3 was the best in the series. The sequels felt more like arcade games.
No PS2 já está quase liberado para o público
@@tdestroyer4780burnout had arcade game dna from the start
@@minignoux4566 But burnout 3 had unique physics and crash system.
Hey MVG, this was a good episode. Hopefully people keep coming up with ways to bring back old console servers like XBL 1.0. The PS2 had servers for some of its games that are still offline with no solution go them and I hope they get the same treatment.
Would be great to get PS2 and Xbox 360 back online. I'd pay for it.
@@divinecomedian2 You do know the 360 still has live, right?
I am very happy to see more content from you. You inspire me to get retro consoles and soft mod them. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Excellent project and great video on it.
Funfact: If you read the original Xbox Live promotional pamphlet it said that part of the fee for Xbox Live would go to ensuring that the original servers would NEVER turn off. They have since scrubbed that language but I've always wanted to dig out my original and post it so people would be reminded that paid console multiplayer has not lived up to its promise.
Im so glad to see that they are in fact working on it. It was a bit sketch for a while and they stopped updating the discord so i thought the devs for one reason or another ran off. I'm glad it's back on track
The OG Xbox was the first and last console I ever had and I never got an Xbox Live subscription as a kid. I still have it and I boot it up every now and then...this is an incredibly interesting service!
Can’t wait for this service to hit its stride. The experience of going online with a console in the early 00’s was pure magic. Some of my best gaming memories ever are thanks to OG Xbox Live.
Pretty disappointed PGR2 didn’t make the cut this time but best believe I’ll be reliving my childhood once that’s out.
Oh my... PGR it was just an AWESOME time. I raced it pretty much 24/7 xD
Xbox Live was such a mysterious thing back when I played on my Xbox, we didn't have internet connection, so I never got to use it. It wasn't until the Xbox 360 came around that I was able to play online. Getting to play on Live after all these years for the first time is going to be a mystical experience for me
Same, I played some backwards on 360 but that was for an short time, it was great!
I look forward developments like this a in the future (even if it's a long ways off) for the 360 and PS3 so we can preserve the experience of things like the blade dashboard with full functionality.
Hoping for PS2 and 360 projects. I miss playing those games online 😕
Glad to se you back on the tube, and with great content as allways. Hope you are also developing something, I can't wait to see more of your love and care into some game.
definitely something i'll be checking out when it's released. Even though i've had my OG Xbox since 2006 I never got to experience any form of Xbox Live until the very end of the 360 era, long after the original servers were taken offline. I didn't know anyone else with an Xbox at the time and my family didn't really use or have an interest in the internet for much more than e-mails so it was something I was completely unaware of as a kid, other than the elusive menu in the dashboard that came up with an error or the greyed out buttons in games.
Xlink kai is such a throwback, I remember hosting games for my group of friends who didn't have Xbox live ♥️
Only thing I hated was people always play the same maps. On halo 2 people only play midship and lockout. Nothing else.

This is incredibly cool!! Would love to play PSO online again for the expirence, would love it more if that was ongamecube but I'm splitting hairs.
The sheer nostalgia of this brings me immense joy! I hope insignia gets the success they deserve.
Actually PSO is going to be crossplay with GameCube players and Xbox players will connect to the GameCube servers that have had over a decade of development.
@@poptheweasel100 really?
@@poptheweasel100 even better!
@@poptheweasel100 Have they improved upon that?
I once looked up PSO when I wanted to check on the DreamPi project but it stated that cross play only works in lobbies.
@@MegaManNeo I dont recommend much using the Dreamcast itself to play online since it is a pain to convert the dial up connection to broadband and there is some limitations with crossplay functionality. To play PSO online it is way easier using a Wii or Wii U.
It's really cool to see the experience of Xbox Live is being preserved! I didn't grow up with Xbox personally but especially now in the age of playing games online (og Xbox onwards especially), it's definitely an important part of preservation to have projects like this.
It’s finally back Online, and it’s way awesome.
This is hugely signifcant in the preservation and documentation of xbox live games. Also hella nostalgic.
Being retired military moving was always hard so I know what you have been going through, yet you still managed to produce great content that's entertaining and informative!
I didn't have an Xbox until Xbox One S. I switched and its been my main console ever since. I went back and grabbed the Original Xbox, Xbox 360 and started collecting for the Original Xbox. I love it and my little boys are Xbox users now. I never had an online experience with the Original Xbox. I did do the X link Kai a couple times and it was cool to experience, but this looks like so much fun to have the actual experience from back in the day. I remember on a deployment I was the coms guy and I ran Cat 5 to several different rooms so we could all do a Lan Party but it was kind of like playing online since we were all in our own rooms. I did this when we stayed in Tents and the cool thing was when you got a kill on Time Splitters 2 you could hear the other person cuss you from the next tent over lol. I'm excited for this service to get the full experience from days gone by. Thank you to the guys doing the work and to MVG for all the work you do on this channel and beyond.
Welcome back MVG! I would love to play this on a modded Xbox with Hdmi output
I already have my hd Xbox set up with an ethernet in my setup for this very moment
Literally subscribed just because of your Liverpool shirt on the last Spawncast. So many people trying to troll a pre-season game in Thailand 🤣

4:45 After almost 14 years Halo 2 on Original Xbox is back online! Thank You to the Insignia team! Dust off those OG Xbox's and breakout those Dukes or Controller S's everyone! It's game time!!!
at long last the time has come
I just picked up an original Xbox and I'm also getting the Xbox live starter kit. (The headset and adapter on their own is a pain in the ass to find and really expensive) I can't wait to start playing Halo 2.
IM BUYING AN OG XBOX (if I could right now)
Thanks for the video. Glad to see you back on the scene. Hope the move went well. Cheers.

I saw you post a video about insignia awhile ago and I've been waiting for an update ethier from insignia, you or another youtuber. So thanks for the update
How the hell did they figure out PSO I and II?!? That’s incredible!! I can’t wait!
It's gonna be crossplay with the GameCube version, too! Xbox players will connect to the already established GameCube servers so there'll be a TON of content to play at launch
@@poptheweasel100 Very cool. One advantage with the GC crossplay is that on console, playing Phantasy Star Online on the Wii or Wii U is very, very simple. You just use Nintendont with BBA Emulation enabled and it connects the game online via wifi.
Can't wait for this. I have a couple OG Xbox consoles and a few copies of some classics like Pandora tomorrow and chaos theory. Hoping one day those will be playable so that the old school spies vs Mercs can be revived. Subbed for the Patreon as well just now. Definitely excited by the potential of this service
"When it's ready"
Yeah it's cliche, but as long as the dev saying it actually means it, it's reassuring. I have no problems waiting if the game/service/whatever releases with no gamebreaking bugs
@UnreaLorenzo more like coming never
@@hola-gy8te I'm not sure what you mean, it's been up for a few months now, and more games are coming all the time.
Responding to OP commenter, there is no lag at all, even with voice chat.
If I've never said this before Dimitris, I really enjoy the background music you use for videos. When that intro began I knew my playlist was on point.
I hope it has its source code released eventually. Man am I curious how this thing ticks! "Oldschool" online platforms are so vastly different from modern ones in their design principals. Things like edge computing or cloud-based architectures weren't a thing back then - it was racks of servers in a very few locations with purpose made software on them. So cool!
Unfortunately, depending on how they’re reverse engineering the XBL service, it might not be legal to make it open source. I’m not saying they won’t, but that might be a reason they wouldn’t.
Insignia will not be made open source, there are various reasons for this which are better explained elsewhere (this has been discussed to death on our Discord server)
We do, however, plan on writing a nice selection of blog posts/technical writeups on how things work sometime after launch.
Neat! It's amazing what a dedicated team can do. Welcome back BTW
That’s pretty awesome. Would love to see Burnout Revenge and CVS2 playable online again.
Been following insignia for a while now, super cool to see it coming together.
It's great to see the homebrew modding scene pushing open doors and creating online gaming even after the actual systems have been removed. Another advance towards game preservation.
I never had the chance to play Xbox Live 1.0 growing up. But still love to see this come back to life
I always thought the online services for these older games were just about matchmaking and one of the consoles would effectively be the server (and perhaps some way to allow hosts that are not portforwarding specific ports etc)? After which any stuttering etc would just be about the host machine.
Jedi academy was my obsession back in 2005. And having Phantasy Star online in that list? I've been dying to play online since the Dreamcast. I am so hyped for this

Real happy to see that MechAssault is one of the games listed for this. I miss that game's multiplayer so much.
please don't make me bring it out of storage. It probably needs a capacitor change 😭
You should really bring it out of storage! Chances are you clock cap is leaking and could cause permanent damage to your console if not removed.
I really can't wait for this to become live to the public, I'm so excited about this.
I never got to experience the original xbox online back in the day as I only ever played single player games, my first experience online was with the 360 and I absolutely loved it and still do to this day.
I still have my original xbox already modified from years back with recently clock cap removed plus a totally standard crystal v1.6.
I'm mainly into racing games so hoping to see games like outrun coast to coast, need for speed MW, underground 2, carbon, Forza motorsport just to name a few.
Thank you MVG for keeping us updated and sharing your experiences with us.
Hope to be online with the OG soon 🤞
How much are they going to charge to get whitelisted on the service? Obviously server(s) cost money to run. This all sounds great, they have patreon, but cant help but feel that w/o some sort of stable recurring monetization that the service wont be sustainable...
It's going to be free when it launches, as far as I'm aware
It'll be free, they said themselves that it isn't that expensive.
FQA from their discord server:
Q: What are the server requirements? Won't this be expensive to run?
A: Xbox live is suprisingly light on network/processing: Xbox Live (for the most part) only does Authentication, leaderboards, friendlists, and matchmaking lobbies. This isn't true for every game, but MOST games host dedicated servers on your Xbox for actual gameplay, they just use XBL to negotiate a secure connection - The max packet size is ~2,000 bytes, and its not too demanding. (This is a 2001 service, remember)
Welcome back!! Always a good morning when MVG uploads
Probably a daft question, but if modded consoles are allowed into the service, will cheaters be able to ruin things? Thanks.
why would cheater still be on that old console?
@@kirrimkerman8784 why not?
I'm sure they'd have a way to get rid of them. It'd be sad to see someone go to those lengths in old games but you'd be surprised.
I'd imagine this is niche enough that manually banning people should suffice, another question would be how to exactly enforce these bans though...
@@kirrimkerman8784 There's always going to be people who get off on ruining everyone else's day.
Awesome to have you back, hope the move went well, I just wrapped up my own move a couple months ago. Looking forward to the studio tour video! I'll be excited to see Insignia release, definitely going to check out their Patreon.
oh sweet they got pso working. now the pso community just has to port blue burst to the xbox.
I hope people are joining in on this. The original XBOX is an amazing and underappreciated machine in retro gaming. I am very excited for this!
What about possible cheating and cheaters? How will they deal with those players? Will the Insignia detect unmodified and modified game files? I would hate to see this service flooded with cheaters 😱. Will they detect same game version?
The fact people would want to cheat on revived servers is sad. I'm pretty sure they'd have some kind of system in place. I understand doing it in private games but keep it out of public lobbies.
I doubt there will be people cheating on this service. All those kids don't appreciate classic games.
Unreal Championship was an awesome game, and it was there for us on XBL when we were waiting for Halo 2. Great memories there.
This is awesome! I only got to Xbox Live when I traveled to the UAE as back home it wasn't even a thing and I remember seeing all those Xbox Live printed materials inside my game discs and get upset that I'm not able to harness the potential of this functionality at all. That said, I only invested in the Xbox Live kit around 2008 and used it sporadically as my main gaming machine was the Xbox 360 at the time. This unfortunately to a massive underutilization (literally 4 live sessions only), and one time when I was trying to login, I got that painful message that the servers were shut down and I got so upset that I didn't get enough time with the service. This is great news!
Glad you're back! This is definitely the coolest thing the indie scene has turned out in a very long time. I used to frequent XLink for Halo 1 matches but this is something I never thought would be possible. I bought Unreal Championship on day 1 so I will definitely be in the public beta fragging away.
Nice playing with you over the weekend. After being subscribed for years now, it was a bit surreal hearing you talk in chat. I am pretty sure my connection was the reason for the Crimson Skies issue @ 1:58 but I think they're still looking into the potential bug. Cheers.
