My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We saw over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

As a former John Deere C&CE dealer is the late 90s early 2000s they are a horrible company. When they started building the Sabre/Scotts line for Home Depot an executive vp stated at a national dealer meeting that "you will never see a John Deere branded product in Home Depot" Two years later at the same meeting the first question asked by a dealer was a quote of that statement and the same vp said "never is a very long time" At that time they were also pushing dealer consolidation and forcing smaller dealers to merge or go out of business. As a part of this, they told the oldest operating John Deere dealer, Lennon Implement in Woodburn Oregon that they could either sell to a large chain in the area or their contract would not be renewed. They also had a full time person dedicated to assisting dealers going out of business in the Pacific Northwest (3 states). In short they are a horrible company and I wish them the worst.

My Uncle was a John Deere Consumer Products Dealer for almost years. Then out of the blue the company rep comes in and tells him he can't be a JD dealer unless he builds a new 2 million dollar building. I might see it if he had been an Industrial or Ag dealer (as profits were much higher for them). He of course told them to "take the flying leap" and just increased sales of Snapper, Toro, and Snowco Trailers. His profit margins rose and we did not have to make a 400 mile run to pick up lawn tractors every month either (as JD was controlling how many units a Dealer could have at that time, unless you went to the plant to pick them up). I was still helping him as I had time. I started teaching Automotive at about that time and had my own auto shop to. Now retired, I never forgot what JD did and never bought another JD product again!

@@dannydaw59 The thing about tariffs most peeps do not understand, is the exporting country/company does not pay the fee, the consumers in the importing country pay it when they buy the product - One of the problems in the country is that in addition to getting tax breaks/write-offs for moving production out of the USA, for products like John Deer tractors, they're NOT subject to tariffs because, the company's HQ's US address makes it an "American" company - so technically they're NOT 'importing'. Between 2012-2014 Rep. Pascrell, Bill, Jr. [D-NJ-9] & Sen. John Walsh (D-MT) introduced a bill to curb the outsourcing of production & bringing jobs/production back 'home' and when the bills made it to the floor, EVERY Republican in both chambers voted NO! Leave it outside all winter covered in snow and there is still no rust. Everything is serviceable and I do keep up maintenance. Only problem in 6 years was the ignitor failed and I lost spark.[$200 Can.] The old JD equipment was very good. Have a 4500 as well with loader [,forks. bucket], snowblower and tiller. Son-in-law mowed lawn next day battery was dead charged it then same thing next day battery was dead . Had battery tested . Battery was fine . Trace problem to ignition switch . Put new switch on . Then found on back of original switch a fine line of what I think was spider shit . Went from one post to another . It was grounding the two posts and draining battery . HR stood in front of us at a meeting and explained that bonuses were going to progressively get much harder to earn because the type of bonus we’d been getting were “uncommonly generous” in the tech industry. The years prior, our “generous” bonuses were explained as “the way Deere ensures its pay is competitive.” All throughout those effective pay cuts, Deere’s C-suite sincerely thanked us for record profits year-over-year.

I remember seeing in the news where they installed software in the computers of their industrial size farming equipment that makes it impossible for farmers to make modifications or something they always did themselves thus forcing them to go to the dealer for whatever and they weren't none too happy about it neither, I can't remember exactly how it worked but if I remember correctly at the end of the day it was like John Deere essentially retained ownership of the equipment even though the farmer had bought it, maybe it prevented them from operating it off of their land via GPS which means they couldn't sell it, it's been a while so I can't remember exactly how things worked but I know they were mad about whatever it was, and whatever it was it was the kind of thing vehicle manufacturers couldn't get away with because vehicles are prevented from having their manufacturer's do the same thing but the laws don't pertain to off road equipment, the laws only protected things that fall under department of transportation regulations, whatever it was I remember the farmers saying that if vehicle manufacturers are prevented from doing it so should equipment manufacturers.
You'd undoubtedly know what it is I'm referring to, how exactly did all that work with the computers on their equipment that had the farmers in such an uproar?

@@dukecraig2402 right to repair. I didn’t follow it much, because the issue is complex enough that it’s hard to hold all the facts at the same time. In a nutshell, I understood Deere to have painted themselves into a corner: they made everything dependent on very complex software, but didn’t have the security in place to lock out third party software…in effect farmers could load (typically Ukrainian) hacked software to make the vehicle or implement run the way they preferred, which might be outside the safe-operating band of that system. If the machine broke, farmers would flash the original software back on and make a warranty claim. I think Deere has started adding hardware to detect and prevent this in some instances. Farmers argued that they bought the equipment and should be allowed to void the warranty with third party software if they choose. The public support for that was quite high, and it seems Deere then side-skirted the issue by changing verbiage in new purchase agreements. I’ve heard farmers say that now it’s more like you buy the shape of the John Deere tractor, but everything inside that shape still belongs to Deere…and that Deere can sue you for damaging their software on “your” machine. Not sure how much was true on either side of the argument.

I know exactly what you're talking about, I couldn't believe what I seen when I was called from my neighbor. He's a dairy Farmer and 12th generation for him. His father and grandfather that I was raised around with hanging out growing up I probably spent more time there then home after the chores were done. What I'm saying is I've been raised riding on a big John Deere fender watching and helping when I could. Watching a 20 roll plow fitting the field and getting ready to plant the corn for the milking cows and bailing them square bails. And when that bail was roped and then kicked out the bailer to be stacked on the hay wagons. You better be ready for a 40-60lb bail flying at the wagon was a good work out and has fun really rewarding to me at least. But if there was rain and a chance of losing your hay they knew what to do and got it done. But the bails were twice as heavy good 90+ pounds flying at you and another guy. But they were die hard fans of John Deere so much they had those toy ones and I mean they were for display only, most of the ones my friends family bought the year old ones that were on display at the dealership. For the dealership had to have room for the new one coming out for the next year. And I mean some are so old but looks brand new cast iron models and 4 times bigger than the original metal Tonka trucks they had in the collection. John Deere went down fast when they were giving you a notification not to do any repairs because they were using the digital world stuff that's running the county and people right in the ground literally. Change the oils and hydraulic fluid or even a hydraulic hose. Think you are all set and the equipment won't start. So now you are thinking let me check everything out I just did thinking you might have accidently pulled out a wire you understand I'm sure. To call the dealer up and have someone show up with a laptop using if it was serious the whole tool truck showed up. Don't even see those little hand held toolbox 🧰. To watch the guy plug in the computer to the tractors CPU I believe that's what he called it. Reset the code and have specially made tools for other jobs. That the public can't buy and the software used on their computer. Forgive me for the long post for I love talking about the good memories. My neighbor closed down during the pandemic of COVID-19. He used to pay $1200 for 2 pickup of the milk twice a day early morning and I believe it was every 12 hours. To be told that they had to dump the milk out, health board there daily to witness it and had to put in a run off to either a gravel pit or to the field, or pay for them to haul it to a waste station. My friends father passed away and left the farm to him and his only grandson who came every summer vacation to stay on the farm and help. My friend tried to talk his son into not going back to doing it when he turned 18 and received a little over 12 million from his grandfather when he was 12. This young man went out to Wisconsin but all stainless steel tanks pipes everything to set up a brand new parlor one of them circle ones for free stall milking it's quite a setup top of the line and he doesn't even have insurance on his own truck and now new wife he's 29 now. His wife is a tiny young lady who milks right around 900 head alone 4 am until the milk truck shows up to get it. He's working down the road on his cousin's dairy farm milking for him. Oh that farm aid and these banks will give this kid all the money he needs for equipment etc it's ashame to see. I lost my best friend from kindergarten until he signed his half of the farm over to his son and turned to heroin drug addict. I can't stand it just kills me to run into him panhandling around the little towns around. It's ashame to see all the once most beautiful barns always painted and nice old farm houses with the wrap around porches abandoned old falling down heart breaking. Thank you for your time I'm 60 years old and been living alone for 32 years disabled and terminally ill. Not on no pity party just trying to pay taxes on one acre of land on $943 SSI once a month. God bless you and yours and I wish you the best. I just learned a year ago about RUclips and streaming free TV for I don't have electricity no more 7 years without. So having a cheap $25 dollar cellphone from the local dollar store and I found a cellphone magnifying plastic holder for it so it's like a little 10" TV and charge my phone in my truck sad don't want to wake up anymore no family I'm the last one left. Probably the reason JD started painting the decks green is they can't make good yellow paint. Clear back in 1995 I bought a new JD farm tractor. After planting season I went to wash it off with a garden hose. Didn't own a power washer at that time. Most of the yellow paint on the front wheels just washed away and I had to take it back. This tractor was in the shop at least once a year until I just decided to sell out with about 700+ hours on the tractor.

But that I mean if lest say a HDD failed the customer could send it to us and we would handle the warranty replacement issued by the manufacturer. Fair so far as I see it. However there was a delay as first we had to receive the product, test it and then send it to the manufacturer for them to test it and return a replacement. So I told customers how to do it themselves as they could sent it to the manufacturer direct and get it returned direct which would save them several days. Surprisingly many didn't want to do that. The really preferred a wait of three to five days extra just for us to sit in the middle and swap address labels on the packages. This wasn't really easier or cheaper for them as shipping to us cost the same as shipping to the manufacturer. HDD's were really the only parts we suggested customers try the direct manufacturer support for as all the manufacturers had very well working RMA handling. Other things were not as easy. Motherboards I all checked as in many cases the customer claimed it wouldn't work at all and it was working perfectly when we got it back from them. This meant we had something to talk about with them and it usually turned out they made som simple mistake. Or in some cases there were a real problem with some ports, but instead of writing that they claimed DOA for the whole motherboard. Hard to know if something is whack when the customer claims nothing works at all.

I sanded the rust off the CVT pullies and put a new CVT belt on it and have run it ever since with a couple of minor issues. Diesel engines with PLASTIC fuel components. ECM engine controllers that burn up after 1-2 years at $2k a pop! Front housings that are so poorly machined that they cause belt misalignment that will cause catastrophic belt and pulley failure. Pulleys made out of plastic. I even had a $50K generator burn up after 9 months! The top of the piston MELTED with no alarms or codes in the computer. John Deere REFUSED to honor the warranty claiming BAD fuel caused the failure! I know the farmers think this stuff is the greatest, but here in the marine industry, this stuff is pure crap...

It has had a hard life, but it has held up better than I could have ever expected. The guys at the Deere dealer always tried to sell me a "real Deere" when I would come in for an oil filter, until I took one of their mechanics over to one and pointed out the failure points on it. Fast forward to the D series, they took the Homelite approach and made them cheap with too much plastic and destined to fail. My friends used to give me flak about not owning a "real John Deere", until they ended up spending more than what they paid for the mower in maintenance. I have spent less than $500 in maintenance cost over almost 20 years, included the deck shell I'm about to have to replace. They're killing their brand with the whole right to repair and unreliable builds, I'm not interested if I can't work on it or if it won't last.

Years ago, I used to buy a lot of John Deere products. I still have my chain saw and pressure washer. Louis Rossmann (also on youtube) explained some of the absolute evil this company is doing when it comes to repairing the products. You basically can't. They put computers in many of the parts, and the computers must exchange a key (serialized). If the keys don't match, the tractor doesn't run. Very bad if you're a farmer and your harvester, combine, tractor, etc. is broken, but you only have a few days to do the task you must do (for example: veggies rot if not picked on time). A farmer would love to do their own repair in situations like that, but they are blocked from doing that, simply due to John Deere greed.
This is why I no longer buy John Deere products. Likely all manufactures will behave the same, but guilty parties must be punished when they get caught.

@@RipliWitani Yes that has happened so often. Sometimes a business can be a co-operative and be running under laws which prevent it from being bought out. In New Zealand we had a chain of community Savings Banks. ("Trustee Savings Bank")
They were innovative offering what were new services unavailable at other banks, such as their "budget account" which was like a cheque account without any fees. and loans at lower interest than the major banks. They were especially helpful with getting folks into homes of their own.
Major banks wanted to buy them up, but the laws under which they were set up originally, prevented that. They were co-operatives where everyone who had an account "owned" a tiny piece of them, that could never be sold off.
Later a change of government, changed the underlying laws to what the overseas owned banks wanted, and before long some overseas bank swooped in and bought them out and basically just rolled them into their existing chain. In our neighbour Australia, similar thing happened with their "Building Societies".

Deere did the same here in Canada. Shut down the Welland plant and left all their workers high and dry.

It was John Deere who spearheaded and lobbied against the right to repair bill. Its to late to make John Deere great again!

Best way to send a FU symbol to Deere, is to start buying and supporting other tractor companies like Massey Fergusson, Case, Fendt, New Holland, etc. We need to rid of John Deere's crippling hold on farming equipment, and give our support to more deserving companies.

They used to make really good mowers. I bought a used John Deere Model 65 from the late 70s early 80s with a blown up 7 hp Techumseh. I went to my local Garden Center and bought an 8hp Techumseh , just a vertical shaft new Techumseh engine that lasted for over 30 years and I never did anything but maintain it. It was perfect for mowing 1/2 acre of lawn, geared for a nice 2nd gear cut that made our lawn like a golf course. I got it in 1987, and it mowed great until 2018. No oil use, no blow by, I took the top off of the metal transmission and cleaned it out with brake cleaner, just dug it out with my hand, then cleaned it with brake cleaner, let it dry and pumped it full of front end grease, a tube and 1/2 and put the top back on. Replaced the belt one time and replaced the delhrin bushing on the idler and took a link out of the drive chain. That is all. When I went to John Deere to buy another one, they didn’t have one. Just fancy crap I didn’t need. I ended up buying a self propelled walk behind with a plain old flathead Briggs. A bunch of plastic crap. I can’t go any further. I gave in and hired a guy to mow our 1/4 acre yard. The JD is in the shed.

I would say I had a Tecumseh mower. That 8hp Tecumseh was doing all the work. The rest is just window dressing.

In my final job before retirement, I worked for a company that was responsible for doing the documentation for large generator sets for the US Army. These all had John Deere diesel engines in them, and trying to get any information out of JD was next to impossible. For my own use, I am a Toro man through and through and would never buy a piece of John Deere equipment. And I damn sure won’t have anything to do with them now they’re moving to Mexico. Are they going to change their name to Juan Deere?

Thanks for the great information!! Granted, I only have a big box L series tractor in my inventory, but with this BS going on, I guarantee this machine will not be replaced by green when it does give out.

Thank you for your review! I’m am having trouble with my D110 engine surging, and engine speeds up and then slows down. I have to add a product called K100 to help with this. I am aware that there is a problem with moisture in the fuel tank, and that is why I am using this product. I am a ex parts store employee who knows a lot about mechanical issues, because my dad was the head mechanic at Browns NAPA. I am glad that I didn’t purchase one of those D105’s! Thanks for the info, and I like you!

There used to be a John Deere dealer about a mile from my house. They had a booming business until a few years ago. They used to be the "go to" dealer for everything in my town. They sold and serviced several brands but JD was their bread and butter. A Kubota dealer opened about five miles away, three years later the JD dealer was gone. Deere is shooting themselves in the foot and don't have a clue. A lot of farmers are willing to pay a lot of money for quality products and service, Deere isn't meeting the need. Like Brie says, "Yellow is better"

A lot of farmers are still using tractors built from the 1960s-1990s, and some from before and or after that time period. They do this to stay in business…

Name one tractor that is manufactured in the USA, or even one brand that is 100% USA owned. Assembled in USA doesn't count, the profits go to a foreign country corporation.

@@heyinway Still, if you can do your own support on them that's worth something. And if your money is going abroad no matter what brand you buy, then buy from someone that will support their products by allowing you to do what service you feel you should be able to handle. Currently I think that leaves you with few brands as I think you want to keep away from the Chinese both for quality and for political reasons.

That's why a lot of people in my area still buy and use old tractors from the 1940's. They were built to last, as simple as simple could be to fix, can be had for little money and there's a big aftermarket making new parts to keep them running. I was more than willing to buy such a tractor back in 2022 when I went tractor shopping because they're affordable. But they were just too big for my dinky little yard so we went with a new subcompact.

@@Slane583We still use two fairly big old tractors. One is an International (6 tires), and a Deere 4340 (6 tires) and they pull hard. Simple machines without DEF and electronics that just keep running with basic maintenance. We can’t pull giant implements and monitor every minuscule amount of seed but the corn still grows. It’s hot, noisy, and slow but also doesn’t have payments.

@@blauer2551 The farmer who tends the big hay field right next to my house uses a mix of older tractors from the late 70's and 80's. The three most common machines I see go up and down my road are a CASE, an older Massey Ferguson and a John Deere.
One of the other larger farms on a back road going to my friends house has a big CASE from the 90's that pulls an 8-wheeled slurry tanker. Sadly I don't know the models of any of the machines. I see them so often I stopped paying attention.
The biggest operation in my area probably has about $1.5-Million in just CASE Quad-Tracs alone without including the various implaments and combines for harvesting the corn when the time comes.
Other than them everyone else sticks to older machines. They're already paid off, earier to maintain, require no DEF like you said and they don't have loads of computers making them work.
