They are not doing this to help the tenant's. They are probably selling it to someone. Little by little, housing projects are being sold and there might not be anymore affordable housing anymore.

Once i heard Related is involved I know they are about prime properties I can say everywhere Related has a hand on is prime they keep like 5% under income but that's not right for a complex that is more that 80% under income. Here's a better solution start building in the playground then when completed watch how many aren't invited to stay while the reconstruction of the main buildings but all NYCHA Buildings are old I always believed in renovation within is better than tearing down and rebuilding

All the buildings have been poorly maintained since they were built. Fully restoring the wiring, plumbing and heating would be much more expensive than a tear down and rebuild.
That said, I can understand peoples apprehensions about being relocated while this is done. They don't want to lose the location- and the city hasn't always been upfront with long term plans, and they can change.
This will be a test. If they follow though and bring all the folks back when this is done, it will be a blueprint for upgrading all NYCHA. Having a doorman would be a big help with security.
If they change course and people don't get to return, there will be riots if they attempt to tear down any other NYCHA building, so they have a lot to lose if they fail to keep their promises.

A new milestone in NYC's migrant crisis: There are now more asylum seekers living in city shelters than there are homeless New Yorkers. The tipping point took place Sunday, when 50,000 migrants were in the City's care, outnumbering the 49,700 local shelter residents.
I guess, that rebuilt houses will be a good place to live for Asylum Seekers. Today they are more important than homeless Americans, tomorrow they will be more important than current NYCHA residents.

I find it funny that the development team has the token brotha out there answering questions from the news and the tenants.
Tenants are going to receive a brand new building with amenities and rent will be 30% of Income which is fair. The average rental price for a one-bedroom doorman unit in Manhattan is $5,214. The average rental price for a doorman two-bedroom unit is $7,495. Tenants with unpaid rent will not be invited back. This serves an easy way for NYCHA to displace tenants who DONT pay rent.

In its place they built single family and attached homes that were for sale only to low and moderate income families - no more rentals. The people do not understand they do not own these buildings the city own them and they can do whatever they want. They are renting and do not have a right to life time apartments. It should be, temporary shelter for 3 to 5 years to get yourself together and find permanent shelter for you and your family.
