    Before filling with moss, bend the wire into a U shape, fill and ziptie. I count my squares on the original pole, cut the same for the new one, it slips inside. You may need a thin garden pole for the whole pole, it gives more stability. I love watching your videos.

    I also do the cup method to water my moss pole, I can just fill it up with my watering can while watering other plants, that´s why I like it more than the upside down bottle, did that as well for a while. also you can clean the cup if it ever get´s dirty, but it´s harder to clean the bottle form the inside.

    Hi Fern! I have successfully sized up my verrucosum to a nice mature plant and I have found a few things that you might find helpful :). Firstly they like to stay hydrated, and they respond really well to a lot of fertiliser (I use 3-5mL get foliage focus per litre). I also have my verrucosum in morning direct sun, but limited light in the afternoon which it seems to love. I find that lots of velvet leaves like a bit of direct sun, but they don’t like it all day as it reduces the size of leaves due to the processes of respiration and water loss in the cells.
    Also I have found that they do not like to be chopped up unless they have a very extensive root system - it makes them revert to smaller and juvenile growth.
    I have my verrucosum on a close back moss pole because they do not like to dry out in the pole at all - I have found that a drying moss pole actually stunts their leaf size 😢
    You probably knew all of this already but seen as you mentioned that you would like to someday get a mature specimen I thought I would let you know 😊 of course there is no obligation to try these methods either, as the plant hobby is all about having fun!

    For those really tall moss poles, I think it would be better to add some kind of rod inside for stability.

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  3 дня назад +2

      I’ve found it doesn’t really make a difference to just add a rod, the whole thing will still tilt 😕 unless you zip tie it to the pot or something.

    • @jessicarose1651
      @jessicarose1651 3 дня назад

      @@wildfern The only issue you may run into is when the plant roots up into the extension and becomes heavier as it grows larger. It may become very top heavy but then im sure you can just do a chop and extend of the entire pole and plant. The rod is the "stability" so you wouldn't have to chop it immediately. Have a great day 💚

  • @Monchesque
    @Monchesque 3 дня назад

    Just a suggestion for the wire poles, you might want to add a stake in that you can zip tie the pole to cause I find with those poles the plant makes them really unstable when they get big and heavy after reaching the top! Your verrucosum is beautiful!!

    You really should add a tall garden stake to the tall moss poles. Sydney Plant Guy has several moss pole tutorials. I just follow his instruction & I don’t struggle making mine. I use the upside down bottle method to water them & I don’t think there’s a better, quicker way.

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  3 дня назад +2

      I’m really happy with how mine have been coming out honestly! I’ll probably experiment with adding a stake, but I can’t imagine it would make much difference since the pole will be heavier than the stake? That’s been my experience in the past at least.

    • @dolledupyoongi
      @dolledupyoongi 2 дня назад

      @@wildfern The garden stake helps to make them more of a solid unit than two poles tied together, if that makes sense. That way you don’t have to overlap the poles to attach them. It just goes on the back of the poles and into the pot and you zip tie the stake to the poles to make them more secure. Hopefully that makes sense :)

    The one question I have is could a PVC pipe with holes drilled all around be inserted in the moss pole and then the water just is poured into the PVC pipe?

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  3 дня назад +1

      you could do that! the only thing is that it will be harder to work with if you want to propagate your plant, because you won't be able to cut right through the pole (chop & extend). it also takes up valuable moss real estate where more roots could grow. I've seen people use them though and it really just depends on your goals and what works best for you :) thank you so much for watching x
