I’m italian so, you know, the country is in lockdown.
I’ve felt the impulse to buy, just to feel alive but I’ve managed to rein it in because those items aren’t going to magically pop up in my house, other people are involved in the process and I want them to stay safe just like I want me and my family to stay safe.
So at the moment I’m not going to buy anything, it’s not worth it.

  • @romanticashale

I know you said reading but I really want to drive that one home. I've been an avid reader my whole life and I fell away from it for awhile because of anxiety/stress/depression and I replaced the habit with watching too much youtube and buying makeup/clothes. If you're someone who wants to read but is having a hard time with it -make it fun! You don't have to read the classics. You don't have to read that book that's really serious that everyone says you should read. Find a genre/author/series that's entertaining and fun. I've recently been indulging in some historical romance books -it's fun, there's always a happy ending, and they're quick to read. (I'm going to recommend Sarah Maclean and Danelle Harmon if you're interested.)
    Other shopping alternatives:
-Coloring books! Relaxing and keeps your hands busy
-Just binge watch that tv show you've been meaning to make time for. Fuck it. Might as well
-Do some yoga if you're into that kind of thing
-Pick a topic you'd like to learn more about and fall down a wikipedia hole
-Podcasts! Especially good while you do things around the house
    -Declutter

When I feel temptation to buy, I often spend time cleaning, organizing, and decluttering things. I feel that sense of renewal as you mentioned, but I also come to appreciate the things I have when I take everything out and go through it. Sometimes we don’t realize what we have until it’s all piled up in one place. Also, it really helps with nervous energy. Stress can become overwhelming so a project like going through your attic or closet (like I am doing) has helped me.

I feel so stressed about the situation. Not financially, I am a teacher and I am very lucky to get paid, even if the schools are closed at the moment. But emotionally, this situation is really taking a toll on me.
My grandfather has a very weak heart, he has had multiple heart attacks in the last few years and I don't know for how long he'll be here with us. On the one hand I want to spend as much time with him as I can, but on the other hand I'm just too afraid to visit him right now.
I'm moving house in two weeks and I am focussing all my energy on that. I'm making to do lists, packing lists, researching and comparing furniture, thinking about how I'm going to decorate our new appartement, making moodboards, shopping lists, ... It sounds silly and superficial in a time like this, but I honestly feel like it's keeping me sane.

So here's the tricky thing for me. About a year ago, I decided to cut down my news consumption drastically. Despite being politically active for most of my adult life and very plugged in, the political landscape has a kind of darkness that I don't see a way to fix. And then 6 months ago, I did the same with facebook. So here I was, living my best life looking at project panners and skincare junkies on IG and watching beauty videos. And then ... I let the news in. Partially because I needed to have the information for my career (lawyer), partially out of a concern for humanity and my community, and partially out of fear. And the fear and darkness (and idiocy) hit me like a wall. So I let in facebook, just to rub it in. My challenge is that when I am in this existential challenge fear state it brings up ALL of my stuff. And its hard to do the kind of juicy self work that helps. My ability to write - gone. Yoga - too quiet. work - distracted and distractable and subject to work triggers, and so on. I just want to rant on the internet (shocking, I know), and that, above all, makes me feel powerless. The feeling of being so generally anxious that doing my nails or shopping my stash or organizing my house feel like too much. I finally caught myself yesterday and made a list of things I could do to feel safe and did them, I limited my news and social media consumption again..I had not in person dates with my best friends via text. And then put on cheerful and creative shows, books, and pulled out jewelry supplies to make a necklace and healthy food to make dinner. But not before breaking my no buy at Natasha Denona. I'm not mad about the money (I had it available), I'm not mad about my choice, I'm not even that mad about breaking my rules. But I am mad that I did it because I let myself get to this place out of fear. That's the meat of my project. Not reacting out of fear. So I am saying this for the people who, like me, did the thing. Who maybe aren't wired to think, I might need that money later for X, because the fear is so intense NOW. It happened. You're not bad. It was a learning experience and now you can reexamine your rules, practice self love, and (for me) make a list of things for therapy. And maybe then get to the excellent suggestions in the comments. But first, to all, you're not bad. Tomorrow you will do better.

My limited resources have been diverted to buying essential things to survive our quarantine - food, medicine, household items - and whatever I have left, I'm not willing to spend it on items not essential to my survival because you may never know what will happen in the near future. In terms of video games cause I really like them, I highly recommend stardew valley or animal crossing for stress relief if you like calming stuff! It's about farming, decor, and making friends! I also release a lot of tension through aggressive games but I can't afford any atm, so I'm watching people on twitch when I really don't feel like having calming times on my farm. Another cool game is Journey. It's a non-verbal story of a traveller trying to reach the top of the mountain. You will probably find other players there and you can take this journey together! The music is breathtaking and the game itself is both cheap and is easy to play.

Im going through a weird time. I used to self soothe with buying makeup and treating myself, and I thought that I would go into panic buying makeup in this scenario too; however I’ve gone the total opposite direction. Im being extremely frugal with money, not going out for food and not even entertaining the thought of buying makeup. Instead I purchased supplies and stocked on basic goods since I fear what might happen. ( my grandparents are immune compromised and I have younger brothers to take care of as well) which is why I bought around 3 months worth of supplies and a food ( not as much) in case we have to quarantine for a while.
I have though about whether buying makeup will help destress more but it seems like it would help at the moment then turn into extreme guilt. Do let me know if you guys are experiencing similar things.

So we stocked up in the past 2 weeks with the intention of self isolating before it was even a recommendation. We live in a very rural area so supplies are limited anyway. Anxiety is rearing its ugly head but I’m practicing coping mechanisms that have worked in the past. My elliptical machine is getting good use. I am doing lots of reading with free ebooks. I have kind of an experience with this thing of being at home in emotionally disturbing times. What really has worked for me the best is keeping a set schedule. Wake up and go to bed and eat at the same hours. You don't want to find yourself on the internet at 3 am. Also keep yourself busy and having obligations.Whatever you stablish them to be. Even if you don't have work or study to do. It's ok to have a couple of days of doing nothing but it can't go much longer, like my mum says "cuando el diablo se aburre mata moscas con el rabo" (when the devil gets bored kills flies with its tail). You have to wake up in the morning knowing that you have things to do. But without overdoing it. There's this risk of thinking "I'm going to this thing and this thing and that thing too" . You do it the first couple days, maybe, and that's it. It's necessary to be realistic otherwise you'll end up stressed and frustrated and that's not the idea.

I don't mean to replace one addiction with another but... I've got a collection itch and there are certain videogames that help with this equally if not better than shopping. Stardew Valley, Minecraft, My Time in Portia to name a few. It just has the same sort of satisfaction that comes with shopping- collecting, fulfilling, achieving, checking things off a list, feeling in control.

Thank you! I am so stressed and sad at the moment bc I'm coming to terms with having to postpone my wedding on 3/04 (for which I havent even come to terms with enough to officially postpone it yet) But we need to focus on the good things
    My soothe list:
    - video games (I treated myself to a video game console that I'd been wanting forever -technically is a shopping way though, but a I've wanted this for a while, it's not impulse buy, it's an indulgence.) But loads of games for free on android: I would recommend Dress Up Nikki. It's meant for young girls but I love it haha - it has a good story!

If you’re looking for a video game that plays with methods of storytelling, I suggest the game “Her Story” that’s available on the App Store. It’s one of those games where you really need to go in blind, but the premise is this - you are searching through a collection of video clips from a set of police interviews with a woman. You search within the police database for key words and every interview clip in which that word is spoken appears in the search results for you to watch. The catch is that you can only watch the first five results that appear for each search term, forcing you to think of more specific words and phrases to search for in order to unlock new video clips. Using this device, the story unfolds in a way that is entirely unique to you and the terms you have searched for, and there is a lot of piecing together you have to do yourself to figure out all of the twists and turns in the story of this woman. The game only lasts a few hours but the acting and storytelling is brilliant - I can’t recommend it enough!

I have definitely been taking a HUGE hit the past week or so within my online stores. I think that most people are out buying toilet paper, laundry detergent, and non perishable foods instead of vintage housewares and handmade jewelry. I should have gone into the toilet paper business.

Thanks Hannah ❤️ I’ve been self quarantined with my preschool for over two weeks and have found myself adding ❤️s to my poshmark wishing I could buy all of them to self sooth, but certainly don’t have the funds. I have found two things extremely helpful:
-Baking & cooking projects (if you have the ingredients). You mentioned this too, but I’ll add my vote for it. I pulled out my Julia Child cookbook and a vintage cakes book! This has been time consuming and fulfilling.
-My partner and I are playing co-op board games (legacy games at the moment). These take so much time and are so mentally soothing. I have so many recommendations if anyone wants any and isn’t on a strict budget in that category. I even have a few I love you that you can play solo!
-I also rearranged my bedroom and closet. It was fun 😊

Great ideas! I love your top. The world has stopped and it is sort of nice to be able to take a breather and do things that we normally do not have time to do. We are single, Women with kids and a family have a whole other set of things they have to and need to do during this time. We all need to find those things that will bring us joy and self reflection. I know now, in California you all are on a forced stay at home. I wonder how that works. Can you go to the grocery store or drug store? You'd sort of have to. I guess no needless being out. Stay safe and well Hannah. Make videos!

I am glad I don't feel like purchasing little luxuries right now, even though I have the tendency to do so - this situation is different... I am confined to home and I don't see the appeal right now to spend on make-up and clothing when I am not going to utilize the majority of my collections either way. I live in a country where cultural and educational institutions have closed down (which is "good" in a sense that my biggest spending point is going out and experiences, but it is also hard for me, as going out, going to theatre, movies, concerts, eating out is my go-to way of coping with my depression), we are not supppsed to use public transport and I have co-diseases... fortunately I can work from home... so staying home for a while now with the occssional going to the gym and going outside to do errands on foot (also living alone). I am now stocking up on basic food, cleaning and hygiene items, also some skincare items. Other than that, I am going to buy some more utilitarian things and a few items that are going to make the quality of the tome spent home better. Like I need some loungewear pieces, I need a new pair of black everyday shoes, and I am going to buy a new CD player and some new albums for my stamp collection. The activities I am going to focus on not to go crazy are decluttering, reorganizing (especially the pantry), reading, painting, movies, catching up with TV shows, dancing on my own, cleaning, learning how to cook and watching TED talks.

one thing that is helping me is trying to find ways to make the things that I want to buy. I wanted to buy some cute stitch markers on etsy, but instead I decided instead to scrounge around in my old jewelry and reuse wires and beads to make my own. The things that I would have ordered at a restaurant without blinking an eye I'm not instead finding copycat recipes online and making it myself. I've come up with several projects I can do using stuff I already own, and I have to say that I'm really amazed how much, in just a short amount of time, I would have purchased without a second thought when I already had everything I needed to make it myself. I never thought of it that way before.

Oh, Hannah....how timely. In reality I’ve not been overly tempted to buy makeup or clothes .....I’ve been tempted once when I put a tatcha skincare kit from qvc in the cart. I got distracted and when I went back I realized I do not need this. It’s nice but I don’t need skincare, not even as a backup. I could afford it but lost the desire. This “slowdown” has a positive side for me....time for self reflection about my buying habits. My weakness being eyeshadow palettes and foundations, the thought of acquiring more seems ridiculous! I won’t look any better with something new than with what’s already here.
So many of your suggestions I’ve already been doing. I’m expecting a new coloring book from amazon today....lol, yes that I ordered. It’s a fashion coloring book. Hope it’s as fun as it looks.
Great ideas! Thank you so much.

Okay here is what I did: I ordered from clothing stores twice, once with a friend and once alone, at 2 am. At the moment I was under the influence that I actually needed all of these things. Realistically, I needed half and just bought half because they brought me joy. All of the items are clothing/accessories- a category that I've had the most issues with because I believe I have a lot of it, and it does get worn but I feel bad decluttering items I don't wear as much and that makes me reluctant to purchase. That is a different problem, but I now regret going all out because the spring sales are just starting, and I might feel tempted to purchase again in the next month or so. I am also on a low buy with a budget, and by buying this I used up 20% of my budget for fashion.

Thanks for saying that about small businesses. I run a vintage homewares business, which is great and lovely and people are spending more time at home so I have pretty things to make that more enjoyable. However, I sell via Etsy and my own website and there's no guarantee the post office will continue to ship. The antique mall where I have my booth has closed. The vintage flea markets where I make the majority of my income have or will be cancelled. My husband works full-time and can work from home and we will be okay, if slightly more constrained in discretionary purchases. Our discretionary purchases tend to be things like eating out at nice restaurants, attending shows, doing studio workout classes and buying fun board games from our local gaming store, all of which will be impacted downstream if they can even operate at all. So yes. Small, local businesses need our help, however we can give it.

None of those things that we like so much (make up, clothes, trinkets etc) would have any meaning or value or satisfaction if life changes and if someone close to us gets sick. I shudder even writing t that sentence . So I am not tempted to shop rn in the slightest bit - for anything other than food and medicines (and I don't mean hoarding those things, I just mean for sustenance) . It's easy to put things in perspective - what matters and what doesn't when there are real problems to deal with.
I also realize it is actually handy having a few back ups for things I use regularly, and that I don't need to downsize to my only one in a category.
Minimalism can get tricky. It's nice having a small back stock.
Like , my eyecream that is almost empty now. I could do without it. However I am glad that I have a new one waiting for me. Same goes for toothpaste. I can, when all is well, buy one when I run out of it, but it's nice that I have some already waiting for me, unopened. Moderation.
I am also thinking about the people who would have to bring me the package. They deserve to have their load lightened. Many people recommend online food shopping and I am not sure what I think about that. In my country there are a few options to order from supermarkets, but it is very, very rare for people to shop like that so I don't think there is capacity for the demand to skyrocket now. Nobody deserves to be overworked. We should conserve energy, sleep enough, not stress and not rush to get anything done.
My heart goes out to all medical workers. My hope is, people know how to respect one another and not endanger one another by being stupidly 'brave' and thinking how it won't happen to them and therefore behaving recklessly.

I had been doing so well, but fell off the wagon for my no-buy earlier this month - I had traveled to NYC for a few days to audition for some theatre things and I was suuuuper stressed out about it and also really proud of myself for going and doing the thing anyway. While there, I saw a Riley Rose, which we don't have where I live, and they were having a ONE DOLLAR CLEARANCE SALE....and all bets were off. I bought like 6 things to calm myself down/congratulate myself for being brave. Thank you Hannah! I've benn buying emergency foods etc, because a possible enforced quarantine is on the horizon over here. I've bought a lot of beauty supplies, too. I just added it all up- I am still within my overall budget for the month, but I need to spend the rest very sensibly. I am very thankful to my past self for putting some emergency money to the side, because this virus will probably result in me losing work in some capacity, too. I was buying against all theanxiety and sorrow, but I am stopping it now.
What I've started doing: I found the one place wehere I get direct sunlight in my apartment. I sit there, by the heater, by the window, propped up against some furniture, in the morning, having coffee, reading Harry Potter. I take luxurious baths instead of showers. I am starting on some home improvement projects. I take a daily stroll during daytime (little park close to my apartment) without touching stuff/people/dogs. I've offered doing the grocery shlep for the older women in my apartment buliding - it calms me down to be able to help the immuno-compromised around me, and it is a social contact (without getting physically close) that makes me feel less cut off from the world. I talk / write to loved ones every day. Since I live alone and far away from family, I make it a daily thing to reach out to someone, to feel connected with others around me.
I count my blessings (gratitude list) in the morning. Today: i am thankful for the sunny weather. I am thankful that my parents are aware of the situation and have cancelled unnecessary social gatherings to protect themselves. I am thankful that even if I don't find a new job in the next 2 months, there is a system here that will enable me to still have health insurance.
I am going to use this time for creative projects I always proclaim to have no time for. It is my silver lining on the horizon.
Best wishes to everyone! We can make it through this!

for any kind of stress, but especially in these times of global chaos, i always turn to nature. if you can get in nature, even a tiny city park, and just sort exist in that energy for a while and remember that this time in human civilization is just one blip in thousands and thousands of years it sort of puts things in perspective. like no matter what happens, life on earth will go on, and for me, that's comforting.
also, i second the idea of organizing and cleaning your things, because you will appreciate them more and it's almost like you got all new stuff. and then finally, if you make a list of things you want, or put them in a cart but don't hit "buy", take the money you would have spent on that stuff and put it right into your savings account.

Thank you so much for this video! I work in a grocery store and it's terrifying how people are buying and hoarding food and toilet paper and stuff like that. I think I haven't realized how stressed I've been until today when I woke up early and got some chores done because I've been working overtime in a public space and it's...a lot. My stress level and lack of self care has snuck up on me.
As far as what I've been doing instead of shopping/panicking, I've been focusing on taking care of my houseplants instead of buying new ones. It's so easy for me to pick up a new plant when I'm stressed, and instead I've been deep researching the origin and best care for each one and spending time caring for the ones I already have.

That top against that backdrop is like camo. Not complaining.

I've been compulsively online window shopping much more frequently lately, and I recognized this behavior as an attempt to self soothe. My husband's freelance income is suffering because of the social distancing policies, so I really can't actually spend extra now. I also work in a hospital and everyone's on edge. Thanks for addressing this for us!

List of things to do instead of shopping/spending money I can't afford to spend:
    1) shop in ways I can't spend money, like apartment shopping, or car shopping. Things I can't afford, or are a BIG DEAL purchase (or rent) like an apartment are often fun to "shop" for, but I'm not gonna impulse buy a car.
2)In a similar vein (I'm single) dating sites. I've been browsing OKCupid, partially cuz I'm lonely as heck, and partially because otherwise I'd be on Ulta or Etsy or something.
    3) Go for a walk. Somewhere not crowded. Easy for me cuz I live in the middle of nowhere, maybe harder for city dwellers. Play Pokemon go?
    4) MAKEUP PLAYTIME! Use the stuff I already have, and appreciate it for all it can do!
    5) work on my sewing project
    6) do ANY of my chores I'm totally procrastinating by online shopping
    7) play with my cat
    8) write a backstory for my new D&D character
    9) I have a to do list every day that I ignore 🙃

I am married, but otherwise I would have wondered if I had written this comment. Love this list of stuff to do to self soothe!
