They were just making sure the snow doesn't get too thick which would make removing process harder.
You're a genius!
Beam high powered microwave transmitters into the sky to vaporize all the snow and clouds.

Dude are you serious! Not cool!
haha, random hawkeye on the 20 yard line at 1:40
This is like my homework....it never ends😂
I love the person who decided to "doodle" in the snow. Made me laugh.
Okay, let's do some math for the people who believe it was stupid or wasteful or pointless for them to clear the snow during the storm.
9 inches of snow fell
Source: www.google.com/amp/btn.com/2015/11/21/watch-iowas-timelapse-video-of-snow-removal-at-kinnick-stadium/amp/
Okay so a typical football field (not including the sidelines and the area beyond the goal post) is 120 yards x 53.5 yards, or 360ft by 161.5ft. We're going to add 30 yards to the total length to make up for the area not covered by the dimension of the playing field.
So 9 inches of snow in those dimensions would give a volume of about 54000 cubic feet.
Snow weighs approximately 5.2lbs per cubic foot for light fluffy snow and about 12.5lbs per cubic foot for heavy wet snow.
At 5.2 lbs per cubic foot and 54000 cubic feet that would give 280,800 pounds, or 140 US tons, of snow.
At 12.5 lbs per cubic foot and 54000 cubic feet that would give 675,000 pounds, or 337.5 US tons, of snow
I'm a reasonable man so I averaged the two which gave us 477,900 pounds, or 239 US tons, of snow.
If they would have waited until after the snowfall they it would have required more man hours and more equipment to move it all out and even still they may have had to delay the game.
Marion Church these maths werent quick
Marion Church it's not stupid because if they wait there will be like 2 feet of snow and then they can't remove it
The Gabe Matthias Did you actually read my comment or just comment like a jackass? I laid out the math showing why it is *NOT* stupid for the people who think it is stupid.
But they can just wait for the summer and save time and resources.
Marion Church All of the man hours and fuel used would be way less if they would have waited till it stopped or was almost done. You don't need math to figure that out. Good example try it in your driveway when it snows. Go out there 6 times while it snows instead of once when it ends with your snowblower. One will use more fuel and time the other less fuel and time. Common sense my friend.
The phrase "Pissing into the wind" comes to mind here
Yellow snow
Like an Etch-a-Sketch being continuously shaken.
WOW, this was so cool to watch. Living in the SW my whole life this was just fascinating to me. I can see how you really have to fight buildup to avoid potential damage or buildup of snow that could become very problematic on some of the structures.
Anyone who know snow removal as a business would agree with what is being done.
There are 2 types of people in the comment section. The smart ones who know the most efficient way is to do it fast multiple times and the stupid high school dropouts who say wait until the snow stops.
Pretty accurate
I say wait till snow stops. Explain why I'm wrong.
looks like we got a snow expert over here uh
@@isaiahrosner3780 because if they wait overnight the snow would pile up realy high and for them to remove it it would take twice as much time as they did removing it quickly multiple times
@@khqlifq ok
That was amazing work they really have it down to a science good job guys
As someone who lives in a tropical country and have never had to deal with snow, I first thought what the vast majority of comments said: why don’t they remove the snow once it stops snowing? But then I read the explanation in other comments and can see that it makes sense to remove several times while it snows than to wait for it to be a huge layer of snow. Thanks for the explanation!
Old comment, but yes, waiting for a snow storm to be over before shoveling can result in compressed snow and ice, making it impossible to remove for days or weeks, depending on how cold it is outside. And I imagine it could damage the field as well and make it a swampy uneven mess next time it melts.
All of the people saying they are idiots and should wait until done snowing should know all the facts before commenting. There was 18 inches of very wet, heavy snowfall and the trucks hauling the snow out had to drive through the tunnels under the stadium. The time it would have taken to remove that much heavy snow by the time it stopped would have meant removal wouldn't have been done in time for 11 am kickoff. And yes, the stadium was packed and Iowa won the B1G West title that day beating Purdue 40-20. Oh, and for those of you who are really stupid, they draw the Hawkeye Tigerhawk at 1:40, not a penis! GO HAWKS! 🏈💛🖤💛🏈
How this comment doesnt have more likes surprises me
You're right about everything but the snowfall. It was 9" which would have weighed ≈477,900 pounds if they had waited.
"Snow pounded Iowa City, Iowa, on Friday night, to the tune of nine inches."

I loved the snow cock
Looks more like a penis, and it doesn't matter, it's still a waste of time and money. They could have started at 6 and been done for kickoff time, you fuckin muppet.
@@mynameisray Well that's because you're not from american so your argument is invalid. Coming from Britain.
People are saying g they wasted time. No they did not. If they did not remove the snow until it stopped snowing then the snow would probably be about like 20 feet tall. That would be super difficult to remove rather than removing the snow 2 feet at a time
Everyone is complaining about how they kept on going over it but if they were to let it snow all night imagine how much longer it would have taken. With WAY more snow like I’m taking lots of feet
Well that's one frustrating job for sure..
As long as it pays the bills...
They wasted time and money trying to get rid of the snow when it was still snowing hard.
Blake Test its easier for the machine. 3 feet machine sill be good. 4 ft of snow machine breaks. Theyre actually saving money
Blake Test this just shows that you have never seen snow
Clearly you have never lived in an area that snows. It's easier to remove snow when it's a few inches deep rather then feet deep.
I live in south Louisiana and I put it together in 10 seconds
You can think of it like picking up leaves in the so you can either do a little bit over a long period of time and make it easier on you or wait until they all fall and do it in about 6 hours think about which one you'd rather do
*Finally i knew what's the function of dome roof!*

hi A Z...
stadium should add a pair of slide closed - slide opened on the dome roof
Real Madrid stadium
Miss the snow, use to snow in Gatlinburg 25 years ago, hardly any now, 2" at most.
Removal while snowy, that is a hell of workout.
props to them, looks pretty cold
How much snow even fell in this video because it looks like A LOT
I think we got 5 to 10 inches.
Draggy654 they don't just push the piles to one end and call it good. they actually remove most of it to outside of stadium.
that was at least 18 inches of snow.
Iowa..in winter?....yeah
Draggy654 There was 9" of snow and if they had waited until the snow was over to clear the stadium there would have been ≈477,900 pounds of snow. So clearing it throughout the night was not pointless and if they had waited they would have needed way more than "minimal equipment".
Sigh Phi Guy No. It was 9 inches

Lmfao. What a waste of money/time/fossil fuels. Us humanz are pretty unintelligent.
Bro Brah sports abd stadiums waste of time
And how would you remove it mr intelligent?
Manny Hopar
Wait until the snow stop then remove it
Fap Man Genius. You cant remove 2 feet thick snow at once. Its easier to remove layer by layer rather than having foot tall snow to remove.
Manny Hopar
My job is fapping idc
Some stadiums where it snows a lot have heating systems under the field to melt snow and then most fields have draining systems too.
I don't think snow is common enough, especially during football season, to warrant a heated field in Iowa. Cities like Green Bay and Buffalo are completely acceptable as it practically snows every other day.
It was hilarious seeing how much work went into it, just to see the field covered in a few seconds. Little do you know, ya have to do it like that, otherwise, shoveling snow that heavy will take the same amount of time. Either way, it's a lengthy process, but what it comes down to is....what's easier on the back?
You may skip to the end, but you'll miss the surprise somewhere within the video hahahaha
These guys are the real MVP.
looks fun
I was wondering why they didn't wait till right before the game but then I realized that, allot of snow would have built up and that would rake a long time to truck out of there.
sorry m8 wow a individual that actually took the time to figure it out instead of acting like a dumbass
in the north of germany we don't get snow like this :( we only ever have like 3 days where there's a lil tiny bit of snow and those are usually not even in December but in January or even February when Christmas is long over :/
As I watch this I'm reminded of a scene in The fifth Element. Gary Oldman says. Life, which you so nobly serve, comes from destruction, disorder and chaos. Take this empty football field. Here it is, peaceful, serene and boring. But if it is... snowed upon... (Grounds keepers emerge)Look at all these little things. So busy now. Notice how each one is useful. What a lovely ballet ensues so full of form and color.
*play this video with a sad song...*
*you will cry*
Anyone else just skip to the end to see the actual removal?
which of the 12 removals did you skip to? 😂
No. Because 2 minutes and 34 seconds is not a significant amount of time at all
It's worth a watch at 0.25 speed, you can see details missed at regular speed. Quite hypnotic.

It looks like a never ending battle, but the crew got it done.
I remember I got tickets to this game vs. Purdue but couldn’t drive down (~4 hours) because of all this snow. Still pissed lol
They did it that way I assume because it's the best way. People generally don't waste money for no reason.
When the waitress refills your drink but you’re not even half done with the first.
Cool.

big wow...
beautifully white snowy snowy...
keep continue wonderful white snow snow snow all day = all night...
but one thing problem is...
how come the stadium dont have a pair of slide closed - slide opened on the dome roof
What type of camera was used to film this?
"Welcome to Hell. Your eternal punishment will be to clear the snow off a football playing field, during a snowstorm which will last for all eternity."
Yes, it would technically be the same amount of snow they’re cleaning up if they did or did not wait until after the storm, but what some of you don’t understand is the fact that snow will compress! Turn into ice! So even if you have to cover the same sq. footage and the same weight in snow, it’s still gonna require more man power and time to break through all of that denser snow.
in all the years of winters, ive never seen feet of snow compress and transform to ice. thats not how it works
That video remembers me the soccer match USA vs CRC. So bad...
Really something to be said for a domed stadium.
Something naughty in there!
At first i was like "why are they removing it while is still snowing?" but its actually a good idea because they are not waiting for all of it to pile up so it won't be too difficult to remove all the snow
Makes me want an etch-a-sketch
Looks like shorts weather in Iowa
How long is the timelapse
As someone who never experience snow before, whats wrong with letting it filled up?
It looks like very old game where Santa cleaning stairs while it's snowing.
My pc with these game was not even 1st Pentium. It was 486 I think.
_It's a vast, swirling wonderland of sparkling white pleasure. Let it fill your senses with cascading, fluffy pillows of excitement and comfort, as you've never felt before._
How much snow was there
Look at the bright side... at least he can say he has a steady job
It’s like fighting a loosening battle
But it has to be done
Did the game go ahead after all that hard work?
What about the snow on stadium seating. The ground was clean
Nothing like pissin in the wind!
I was in IC that night. Wished I had those guys to dig me out of my house.
The work of the Siyths
Makes the job go a lot faster
The snow just seems to fall just a fast as you remove it.
man vs nature!
Damn you thunder..
What is that at 1:41?
Why no ground heating?
I think Changzhou stadium's managing department should have applied this when hosting the finale AFC U23 between Vietnam and Uzbekistan.
How much did it snow god damn
This is the job that never ends..
Oh man that looks like a tedious as hell job lol. Seems it would make more sense to just have a roof over the stadium. Capital expenses are always cheaper in the long run.
This video is literally the definition of insanity
Why won't y'all just snow plow the snow after it stops snowing?
More work. Shovel/Plow while it's snowing gives you less work when it's done. Which would you rather do? Shovel 4 inches in intervals or 3 feet at one time. Think you'd take the lesser amount.
Terry the machine will destroy and then you will have to use a shovel
Draggy654 nah I say a foot and a half
Terry it’s because they are Hawkeyes they don’t know better
That’s too easy
For example. It's easier to remove 1cm of snow 10 times than it is 10cm of snow 1 time.
it feels like forever 😂
Make it a 10 hour video. That would be so relaxing....
They actually did this the smart way. Do it in the snow, so after, you dont have so much work!
*WE’VE CLEANED THIS FIELD 585 TIMES, WHY HASN’T IT BEEN CLEARED YET?!*
In the UK the stadium have under flow eating and drainage
On can imagine Sisyphus happy
❄🔝❄🔝❄🔝❄🔝❄
That was painful to watch. A thankless task. Appreciate easier to keep removing thin layers though than waiting for two feet worth to build up
make a open and closed dorm would be ez
(i understand why they kept doing it).. but anyways its like washing your car when it's raining
I know why it's removed in stages
My question however is why undersoil heating and drainage systems havn't been installed?
Turn that on when it starts and the snow never settles
doyoulikebeetroot maybe not enough funding to afford it

thats a (metric) fuckton of snow.....good job guys
Cool great great great 📯 thank you 👍🏿🌹📯 Mmmmhh 🥰
Welcome back to "What Will RUclips Recommend To Me Today?"
look at those workers trying. When it snows, you don't just wait 'til it stops.
What about the seats?
People can remove them themselves
To all the people who probably live somewhere warm or you’re lazy who think that they are dumb for removing it multiple times, because if you tried moving it all at once it would probably take double the time
Some people know the struggle. 😂
the litterally would be removing the same amount of snow, they are just lazy to do so and wasted more manpower/hours/money and did double work.
