RIP headphone users at 10:55
The original one sounds more... Metal Zone! 😁
Boss owns Ola a big favor!
No kidding, also rob from cannibal corpse
a lot of youtubers did it much before ola
@@sarthakray5887 Of course. It exists since the 90's.....
yeah, Ola recovered million years of bad rep to this pedal because apparently nobody knew that this sounds great in a tube amp's fx loop
In the Philippines, we always plug Mt2 in amp FX return. That is why we love Mt2.
Thanks for taking the time to do this nice work and review.
Bought mine in '92/93ish. Still have it, never found a better distortion pedal personally.
I like the original. I’ve mastered the eq settings and it is my go to for leads.
This. Getting really familiar with those concentric mid eq pots and the concentric hi and lo eq pots is the absolute key to this pedal. And don't be afraid to turn the knobs counterclockwise!
The problem is that most guitarists are like Derek Zoolander. They can't turn left.
It’s my go to for rhythm
Facts
The Metal Zone seems like it’s basically a DS-1 with a built-in amp modeler & equalizer, and the WC sounds like a capacitor circuit filtering out certain highs & high mids, which would explain the lowered noise levels.
The Metal Zone:
a pedal that new players get but are the last people who should get it
Ahhh you have got the configuration of the Metal Zone to go through the effects return! Yes this way sounds soooo much better
The "Standard" versus "Custom" is a component bypass. I did that on my Metal Zone, and I got the same effect: Moving the switch lowers the high end. It's cool, took a little bit, and saved me some money, haha!! It's not an original idea. If you are handy with a soldering iron and a drill, you can give it a try.
The Custom mode seemed to work better in front of the amp rather than in the fx loop return on CSguitars vid.
Excellent video! Thank you!!
10:56 now that is what real metal sounds like. gonna buy both to get this sweet tone
And send the signal to Mars.
Actually god this pedal early and I guess I using it the modern way on an old Peavey 160 and it was amazing.
I love the Jazz Zone pedal from Boss myself 🎸🧐 HA!
I bought this one when it first came out and I always enjoyed the tone settings Low at 3 o'clock High at 3 o'clock Mid at 11 o'clock Mid Fre at 1 o'clock Dis at 1 o'clock and Gain at 12 o'clock. Great Metal tone to pull off Dime style riffs.
They should have put a noise gate on it
The only issue with using the same settings is the variable in potentiometer ratings like thebtube screamers the pots can very so 500k resistance pot can range i think from 448k-512k which can make one seem darker or like it has less gain. The variables make it not quite the same pedal.
Conclusion: For modern metal use old metal zone
For old school metal use nu metal zone
Just a simple capacitor is all you need to clean up noise and take out a bit of treble.
I got the mt 2 might just for its ability that brings various effects, overdrive, rock'n'roll stuff. If I want a great distortion pedal for my lead guitar I might just go for the fender pugilist distortion
Fade to black so such a fucking great song thanks for playing it
Love my metal zone, but the mt2w one does sound great for lead
Hey man, I saw you at the avatar trivium concert in Anaheim! I hope you’re doin well and am as always glad you’re making vids. Keep it up man you’re a legend.
I particularly like the custom mode on bass in combination with a LS-2 mixing some dry signal back in, and also on synthesizers also with an LS-2 mixing in dry signal. I find the standard mode most useful with guitar, personally.
Incidentally, I actually preferred the original Metal Zone on certain examples. The new one indeed has more clarity but that also kinda brings it slightly out of the original territory of the original that I like. The somewhat less clear sound is kinda distinctive in a way that I enjoy. However, there are also examples where I preferred the standard mode on the new one to the original. I’m glad I have the Waza Craft one, but I can still see why someone might prefer the original.
They sound the same my mind is blown :o
10:54 Now you've done it... A portal to hell has been opened.
I'm many years late to this video. I have the MT-2. I think its a great pedal but I never really liked it as a stand alone drive. Its true potential for me was unlocked when I turned down its gain to almost nothing and then ran a JHS Bonsai into the front end of it with the Bonsai dancing around 3/4 gain. Amazing. Running a TS into the front end of this thing really wakes it up and balances out the high end screech. Like butter.
They’ve updated the buffer. You’d need an A/B box, and more context, for that to matter in a demo.
Finally!!!
Rip earphones ...
Or ears, for that matter.
only if you listen at ridiculous levels. :P
Everyone seems to be missing the point of the new MT. Stop making AB comparisons of different settings and so on... it all comes down to the fact that the mew one has better note separation. Thats it! And thanks god they did it cus the previous one was quite shit on that...
Hehehe... were you afraid of using the most powerful feature of this pedal?.... the EQ!! I guess the perception of the Custom mode being more Hard rock than Metal would have gone away with a slight turn of a knob. Cheers from down under!!
Yesss finally
Which one is new?
On standard mode it honestly sounds exactly the same as the regular Metal Zone.
Are you saying this based on this video or do you own the pedal? Irl you tend to notice differences better
11:06 Will Sasso lost his mind 😂
Why can't I get that sound with my Metal zone coming from my Orange cr120
I have tested this new metal zone , only once , and it's not my cup of tea !!!!
In the past I had the old MT-2 , but today I'm glad for cutting off the MT-2 cord !!!!
What is different is the shape of the curve of the mid freq sweep. So in standard it is the classic metal zone curve. In custom is it more of a spike. So when you sweep the mid freq its only affecting a very narrow Hz band. This will allow more control, predictability and tightness. So really you wouldn't see much of the 'modern' sound til you start tweaking those mid nobs.
Centre right?
Gross.
Does anyone have the original or the Waza craft?
Both pedals have buffered bypass. So when we hear the waza after it there is the buffer of the bypased classic m.zone and the exact opposite when we hear the classic m.zone.Use a switcher for a test like this unless the pedals have true bypass!
The custom mode sounds so much thicker.
I think these can sound great into a great sounding tube amp.
I have found 5hat to be the case.
If you have a great amp, why not just turn it up?
@@creamydistortion twin reverb? I have a 6505, but when I’m using the twin, metalzone handles the gain
I agree with you. The Waza loses the uniqueness of the MT-2 for a more classical and neutered sound.
Check out the Sweetwater videos for the new pedal.
Na guys not much of a difference.if I was to add switches and make changes on the pedal I would of just added a noise gate switch.thats something waza or boss should of done with this all new metal zone pedal..otherwise keep your old box.it still rocks!🤘🏻
So nice. How did u do ur signal chain?
Metal Zone straight into Apollo interface DI input into Pro Tools, the only plugin I used on it was Two Notes Wall of Sound, using their 6L6 power amp modeling and one of my Lancaster Audio cab IRs from my signature pack.
@@treyxaviermusic wow thanks a lot. I would like to try those plug ins. How about live performances, how would u recommend to sequence the mt 2, front of the amp? Or at the fx loop?
If you use it in the loop, you need to be using it as the preamp, so you're not going to go into the front input, you plug into the pedal and then into the loop's Return jack. I think that's the best way to use it
Better than the original. Maybe scoop some mid or bass just a notch in custom mode or some highs out if stardard for less zappy highs...
Ah the common mans Klon.
Kinda expected things to go all 'Scanners' @11:04
The original mode has this great mid range the custom mode doesnt have. But the custom mode is awesome tho. Very clean
There’s more high end on the custom mode!!!
these pedals came with great instructions if you just looked
Through fx loop?
Plug it into "SEND"
Esto es como lo que hicieron en play station 4...con la play station 4 pro.
10:56 how everyone's first band used to sound back in the day
Metal Zone works well with Thrash.
*trash
The heavy metal HM-2 sounds way better for thrash than the metal zone MT-2
10:57 for apex tone
Me when the DQ employee flips my blizzard upside down 6:38
The best sound I ever mustered out of Pod Farm 2 was the a tube screamer clone into a metalzone clone through a bypassed amp into a cab. I'm not even sure it was even supposed to be done, but it worked better than all the other setups I tried... A few weeks ago Ola did basically the same but with real gear.
So they're both being used as a preamp and not a pedal? I'd rather hear it used as a pedal...
The new original isnt that from spinal tap? hahah
I've got both pedals, original.metal zone sounds more raw compared to original setting on the waza
Manuel!!
I still prefer my DS1X 😊
Its a pain. Because it sounds better through the fx loop return but you lose your clean channel in order to do that. Sucks.
Guess i'll stick with my Ampteaker Tight Metal...
New Metal-Zone Vs Nu Metal-Zone :P
Seems there is not so much difference?
Try using the Metal Zone in a studio setting, and watch the engineer cringe and eq the crap out of the rail. Then ask you to try a bunch of other stuff they have on hand. Why would Boss come out with a pedal that only sounds good in 5% of its tonal range?
The design theory was to be able to plug in any kind of cheap/old amps and shred metal. I bet you can make a automotive subwoofer sound like a metal amp..lol
10:53 lol
I traded mine for a Danelectro Fab Tone back in the 90's. That lasted me about 20 years until I got an Op-Amp Big Muff Pi. Hearing it again, I'm glad I traded it in. It hasn't aged well to my ears.
top
I would rather have a keeley modded metal zone.
David Gilmore uses one (believe it or not).
Hate the distortion on Metalzone pedals, lve the EQ section. Really powerful. I wish I could get it just as an EQ pedal, ditch that horrible flat clipping altogether.
I’ve seen a lot of people use them as boost pedals like that with the gain all the way down
@@treyxaviermusic Thanks for your reply! I still think it alters the tone too much though..
I guess they just removed the spiky pre 1kHz filter......
How does the ML-2 Metal Core compare?
they have a digram to make it yourself online
At 6:46 I swear you're using Autotune when you're speaking 🤣
Gotta love the dad riff!! AC/DC
Back in Black :D
The endin..Lol
that song is still bad @ss
Of course it didn't sound that modern. It needs more tweaking to get the tone
Play thrash and been using the mt-2 since it came out... The original is still king if you take the time to learn to use it right.
HAHAHAHA
The truth is Boss missed a HUGE opportunity with this reissue. They should have made it as 2 channel preamp pedal with a clean channel based on the Roland Jazz Chorus.
My personal comment on testing my old BOSS Metal Zone MT-2 from the 90s against its successor BOSS Metal Zone MT-2W Waza Craft:
For distortion of my guitar(s) I use all those years my old BOSS Metal Zone MT-2, yes the one model with a bad reputation. As a new successor BOSS offers the MT-2W, the Waza Craft version, which can be set to the 'old' MT-2 mode by a switch. As some people claim it's a nice pedal reducing unwanted noise BUT: it cuts off bass frequencies from a certain point and lacks of some vehemence, in other words it sounds a bit less powerful when blasting your face with some metal tunes. So for me as a lead guitarist playing bassy 80's driven metal, it was a bit dissapointing. Seems like someone of the pedal creators wanted to prevent a guitar's low bass frequencies to disturb bass players and drummers for the sake of hearing each instrument better and clearer. This intention might be chivalrous at first glance, but that way it cuts some control from a guitar player and what if the messier more bassy sound is wanted, this is not acceptable in the end.
I sent the pedal back still using my old one.
Thanatos
vocals/lead guitar
Metal core might be better than both
NO MIDS YEAAAAAAH
I like original better
Any Hardwire TL-2 fans lurking here?
New mode? Just play with the Eq on the old one and ill bet you will get the same tones between old and new.
Boss pedals had lways targeted a particular price point and therefore used mostly standardized, mass produced, off-the-shelf components. The Waza line uses top shelf, and sometimes custom, components for a much improved (subjectively) sound.
I love how none of these metal youtubers know how to play Back In Black correctly.
AC/DC isn't metal so
ao el Oh, that explains everything.
@@burresseffects and you look like a hipster so
Lol its kinda funny as a bass player i can play this on guitar.
LMMFAO!!! You rock bro!!! That's hilarious!!!
Don’t like the custom side at all. I’m just gonna buy the original and save 100$!
Custom is way better for modern stuff...
"Quieter" doesn't mean less hum from your guitar, they mean less thermal noise (hiss) from the circuit. And why in hell would you bypass the preamp in your amp. Why bother to have an amp? lol
metalzone = opeth
And I love Opeth
Threre's nothing in the new one that a simple tweak on the old one can't achieve.... Waza Craft is Snake Oil...
you forgot the kneely modded version, am I the only one that cares abut the three?
HaHa, use a Mesa amp and don't look back :)
BTW, the Mt-2 is an underrated great pedal, the only issue is that a lot of people doesn't know how to set it right. These Waza Craft things are just about making more money for BOSS... There are a lot of ways to get that sound.
