    I took piano lessons for about two years when I was about 11. I practiced but not hard. I started playing guitar when I was about 13 and it has ruled my life. I learned music theory (including Modes). After playing guitar for over 30 years I picked the piano back up. I still struggle with the piano so I task myself with composing in the piano first then taking it over to the guitar. I have found what I write on the piano first is actually more complex which I find very cool.

    Thank you Kaitlyn. The hat part is definitely my favorite😄 I guess that's how you can write music unconventionally. I am going to try the same hat method to come up with random chord progressions

    I liked the idea of pulling out chords from a hat! And I think it’s cool that you committed to whatever chords you pulled out, even though that second progression was a bit unconventional. Very authentic.

    • @lumpichu
      @lumpichu 10 месяцев назад

      To me the second one didn't sound good at all. The end sounded like I often do when I improvise and don't know how to continue in a good way, like just a random chord from a scale which it was, not beautiful as the title says. But kudos for keeping it in the video.

    • @pianoly
      @pianoly  10 месяцев назад +1

      @@lumpichu I didn't love it either, but I just wanted to be real with you guys instead of pulling out all chord progressions that were amazing. Of course, you'll have to experiment to see what sounds good. But you know now what chords go together from a tonality perspective!

    how do i know to play on a major or minor scale, when random choosing my progressions, as the next progression..?

    • @pianoly
      @pianoly  10 месяцев назад

      Choose which major/minor scale you want for the song, then pick the chord progressions from there.

  • @jade8538
    @jade8538 10 месяцев назад

    Very enjoyable. I'd like to mention though, you said when a song is in a particular key, that means it only uses notes from that scale (at time 1:15). That's not *always* true -- for instance, Stevie Wonder's "My Cherie Amour", in the key of F, uses notes not in that key. Same with "Satin Doll" by Duke Ellington, and many other well known tunes. But your point is well taken, and the majority of pop tunes do mainly use notes from the key it is in.

    How do you know which key your going to write your song in? If you know you want a minor scale, then what?

    • @pianoly
      @pianoly  10 месяцев назад

      You pick which minor scale on your own!

    • @lumpichu
      @lumpichu 10 месяцев назад

      That's what I'd like to know :) My idea is, probably completely wrong, it's good to make the thing playable (and singable), so you consider your instruments, on piano only it's usually not a big problem, then you choose from what scales you do know :) what sounds best to you.

  • @DanielDeRudder
    @DanielDeRudder 10 месяцев назад

    I agree that in these random chord progressions all the chords sounded OK but not all chord progressions were sounding 'pleasing' to the ears... Are we conditionned in some way, you think?

    • @pianoly
      @pianoly  10 месяцев назад +2

      Of course, not all of them were absolutely amazing from me pulling them out of a hat. I didn't want to be fake and pull out all chord progressions that were perfect. It will take some experimenting to make something you like.
      But also some people will write songs that are NOT pleasing to the ears to make a point to the music. A really good example of this is "Punch Bowl" by the Punch Brothers. It's an unpleasant chord progression to go along with the lyrics.
