In late 1988 when my Dad was dying, this hymn was placed in my mother's hands by a Salvation Army Officer. She placed something in my hand also, but I could not bring myself to even look at it. Dad had been brought up as Church of England, but in spite of a simple faith, he really did not know he could be saved and so was fighting death in fear. I've always loved music, especially hymns, and when Mum said, "Oh Harold, it's your favourite hymn", I got up, took it from her hands and stood by his side and then sang it to him. He began to calm down and look at the ceiling. I had previously prayed, "LORD give him a vision of yourself?" I had been a nurse and watched many people die. Those who were Christians and saw the LORD did what Dad did: He raised his hands towards heaven. I then quoted Psalm 23 not knowing it too was one of his favourites. His hands and arms were stretched upward and his eyes wandered over the ceiling as if seeing not only the LORD Jesus, but innumerable angels. Mum was stressed about this and tried to get him to lower them, but I asked her not to as I believed he saw the LORD. In fact, I felt like we were intruders into a very special heavenly event. To this day I believe my darling father was fully redeemed that day and passed away later in the night.
I love this hymn and the joy the LORD gave me to bless my Dad before his passing into glory.
May God bless your ministry as you have certainly blessed me and probably many many others. I can no longer sing as I have a lung condition. However, Christian music and especially hymns lifts my heart and soul in worship.

When I was a teenager my pastor referred to Amazing Grace as the granddaddy of all hymns. Thanks be to God for his grace revealed in Jesus Christ

This is my favourite hymn, followed by Nearer My God to Thee. My mom can’t listen to it because it was played at my grandfather’s and uncle’s funeral. So I get it. But I absolutely love it, and the story behind it.
