Thanks for the info and the conditioner ingredient tips! I have been making knives for a little over a year now and I basically learned to make my sheaths by watching you. I've learned so much! I'm not the leather craftsman you are by a far cry, but I do get as many compliments on my sheaths as my knives thanks to you. I as well as many others appreciate your channel and wish you a speedy recovery, Justin.
Good video. Something l learned the hard way is that hot water is good, boiling water is bad. Spent several hours making a scout carry sheath and figured if hot water worked to stiffen it some, boiling water would do even better. It stiffened it to the point where the straps would not even flex. Ruined what would have been a great sheath. Damn sure wont make that same mistake again!
Your my kind of guy ! Tough working with one hand -Been there ! Thanx for your time and effort. When shtf you and me and others will carry on and survive.! Thanxxxxx !
That's great, really practical video on many levels. I am newer at this stuff as you know so last fall, I needed to try and learn some of this exact stuff to TRY and wetform at least one of my sheaths for one of my Condors....... I was so scared lol. Researched a LOT, finally did some of this kinda stuff, it worked out OK. -- I buggered up the leather a bit on the outside, but not badly considering everything at being new, my first time at it. I actually used coconut oil. The sheath was soaked in hot water on my stove for quite awhile I checked it a lot. It was too stiff and thick to form w my hands, those sheaths are beasts as you know. so I wrapped it w a thin towels and clipped huge binder clips all the way around to do what you would do pushing w your fingers. And 2 L. zip ties lol. I told Larry he needs to start eatin the Coconut Oil, so many benefits to it - you should remind him, he listen to ya lol. TY for the upload, it is very practical and helpful!! I hope your hand is doing well. Try not to overdo it.
well, justin i have an old .357MAG holster i have been carrying for years and it's been dry. i got out some coconut oil (didn't have any bee's wax) and treated the holster lightly. then i sprayed it with Pledge furniture polish and wiped it down. looks like that worked ok even though it's not exactly what you prescribed. good good old holster that i never have treated and i've had it a couple of decades. i looked at mink oil at WM........ dang, they wanted almost $10 for a little kiwi brand tin of that mink oil (too much). thank you, martina
Glad that you start to make vids again...keep going on bro! And prompt recovery....what happens is not ez to get over....I have seen people in the same situation...
Justin,Great vid. You just educated me. I would have fallen into the category of an "over-oiler." I'll cut it down to a light coat twice a year, unless I go swimming with the sheath! LOL
great video, and I made the conditioner and successfully wet molded my leather sheath on the back of it, well, I say successfully... any suggestions on how to rescue a well baked sheath? (oven possibly set too high and the sheath is now bubbly) all part of the learning curve!
Damned good video.i followed your instructions and wet molded the leather sheath for my TOPS BOB and it worked perfectly.thanks for sharing your knowledge of leather work.
I hope you make a good living doing what you do and stay self employed. I am self employed also and hand make a very unique item. I have been more successful then I should be. It can consume you if you let it. But there is no better feeling. I am hooked on your videos.
I've found that it's a busy as I want it to be. These days I care more about living a nice life vs chasing the $ though. I enjoy it for sure. You know as well as me the challenges though. Thank you Chuck. What item do you make?
Oh for sure man. This stuff is great for all leather. Just remember it won't soak in as well on the fleash side of the kodiak. Doesn't bother me because I like everything nice and conditioned but some won't like it.
Beeswax and coconut oil sounds like a good alternative to concerns I read about attracting predators or scarring away game when using bear grease or other animal fats on leather boots etc. What about storage concerns especially long term?
I've read that coconut oil will become rancid and smell bad after a while. Justin, do you think this is BS? I'm sure it doesn't matter for treating leather or protecting your knife handle and blade, but it may deter me from using it for lip balm.
I use coconut oil for a lot of my herbal remedies and mostly it will just get kind of a stale nut odor, if it gets any odor at all. Animal fats tend to get rancid more than nut oils, IMO.
leather will wear out over time IF IT AINT CARED FOR PROPERLY! thats the point people mis state this looks as it has been properly cared for and treated it hasn't been allowed to get soft from water and has been treated to keep it from deterioration with this sort of care a sheath like this should last for 100 years or more
Great video Justin! Hey, wanna sell that knife? Let me know. I totally agree about leather. As long as its taken care of, it can last a lifetime. Hope the hand is healing well. Thanks.
How can I contact u cause i have been looking at all ur leather sheaths and kydex sheath and I've been wanting to ask u if ur able to make me one for my mora 2000?
"Kiss our butts" HAHAHA OMG Did I roll around on that. love it! I also want to say thanks for the vid because I've been wondering about the best way to do that. (you don't want to know what my amateur #%(@* was thinking about that). Can I soak and utilize that method to "form" a standard factory 'formless' sheath? Looking forward to more vids.
Wow, who can make a sheath for themselves? And then he says the stitches are too wide, lol. It looks really lovely but then I'm not an expert I just think it looks very cool..
It's actually surprisingly simple. What I had the most trouble with in the very beginning was cutting my leather because I skimped out on the cutting tool, so my rounded forms would be pretty ugly. But stitching, dyeing and finishing is fairly breezy when you know how.
This has to be one of the best videos on caring for a leather sheath

Justin,Great vid. You just educated me. I would have fallen into the category of an "over-oiler." I'll cut it down to a light coat twice a year, unless I go swimming with the sheath! LOL
nice video, one question though how do you prevent or get rid of that green stuff that forms around the brass pins on the sheath?
Thanks for another great video! It full of lots of info! Does that conditioner have a shelf life?
great video, and I made the conditioner and successfully wet molded my leather sheath on the back of it, well, I say successfully... any suggestions on how to rescue a well baked sheath? (oven possibly set too high and the sheath is now bubbly) all part of the learning curve!
GREAT video,thanks!
Where do you buy the beeswax at?

Just found this video and really liked it. Thanks for the good info.
Checked out that video link, totally worth watching, thanks
Thanks for showing the process.
is the ratio for your conditioner 1:1 or more 1 part beeswax to 2 parts coconut oil?
Damned good video.i followed your instructions and wet molded the leather sheath for my TOPS BOB and it worked perfectly.thanks for sharing your knowledge of leather work.
Great video, thank for all the info Justin.
Thanks for doing this video, Its exactly what I was looking for.
No problem Dale. Glad you liked it.
Just wondering where you buy your leather? Thanks for the awesome teaching!! Love it man.
+Josh Wright tandysleather.com
Is there any type of ratio to beeswax coconut oil you use?
Great instructive video.
Soooooo....... How long have you been caring it?
and don't knock it i think this knife and sheath are absolutely gorgeous as they have been properly cared for
Great video brother! Great info.
Thanks for sharing, checking out the link you mentioned.

Thanks for sharing ! Kydex like a drum machine has no soul .....
so is coconut oil better than linseed oil for waterproofing leather
and does it go rancid
+Jay Ramirez way better than linseed oil and no it doesn't go rancid
awesome so does this replace that other recipe that you made that consists of 50 BLO/50 beeswax?
+Jay Ramirez Actually any edible oil will go rancid over time, except for food grade mineral oil.
Shad
Justin, do you use this conditioner on your Kodiak tanned leather as well, or just on veg tanned?
Oh for sure man. This stuff is great for all leather. Just remember it won't soak in as well on the fleash side of the kodiak. Doesn't bother me because I like everything nice and conditioned but some won't like it.
Good video Justin! Rough estimate 3 to 1 coconut oil to beeswax?
Good Question...Don't want to be a pest ..but am interested in a rough estimate as well.
Great vid! Big help
Great information Justin
Beeswax and coconut oil sounds like a good alternative to concerns I read about attracting predators or scarring away game when using bear grease or other animal fats on leather boots etc.
What about storage concerns especially long term?
+John Ruckman you don't need to have any concerns at all. I have been using this combination for a very long time and have never had a single problem.
Interesting video.. Thanks

Looks good regardless of the age. Still making knives?
Good info. Thanks.
"Damn Left Hand" how many times this righty has also said that attempting to become proficient with that "other side".

Do I like it when someone ask themselves a question and then answers it? No I don't.!!
