"I don't like listing specs of watches, so let's get right to it" - That's awesome, performance is what ultimately matters. Great review and enjoy your videos.
As a PhD student in AI, I greatly appreciate your quantifiable approach to comparing smartwatches. May I suggest using correlation coefficient to compare the GPS signals to find out how correlated they are? Also, I would like if you could compare against the correlation coefficient value for GPS signals from a cellphone on your pocket. I think using it would give a quantifiable measure of agreement between bike trip tracks, which is what your channel is all about ;)
Hey, I'm curious about your thoughts on the challenges of applying AI to sleep stage inference. Provided you have a sufficiently large dataset of wearer metadata (age, weight, gender, device location, etc), raw sensor data of a target device (fitbit, whoop, etc), and the sleep stage inference results from a reference device - could one be successful in training an ML model that more accurately infers sleep stages? According to the results from Rob's research, it looks like the major devices of today are no worse than 30% off a given reading from his reference device - I could be wrong but I don't believe they currently use ML to determine sleep stages. I feel it would be difficult getting enough cases for the training data - but if you partnered with a few sleep study clinics, you could have a few thousand cases in a couple years.
great channel mate, loving the objective evidence-based reviews.. One thing that might enhance understandability might be the units of time along the x-axis. E.g., does 19:10, 19:20 = 7:10pm, 7:20pm? or 19m:10s, 19m:20s? Might seem obvious but I can't be sure... I presume the interval is 10s rather than 10m?
Amazing video! I'm an engineer and totally understand your point 😊 Can I ask which battery saving smartwatch setup have you used on the GTS4 used on these tests? In my experience with previous GTS models, that can influence the quality of measurements. Thank you 😊
Hi, I'd love to know if recent updates improve the performance of thos and other watches. Something like 1 year update or something, that would also give us a better notion of how the manufacturers take care of sold watches
Looking forward to your review on the Amazfit TRex 3. A lot of different reviews out there. Curious to see if it really stacks up to what people are saying.
@@TheQuantifiedScientist Set Pulse Ox Tracking Mode to During Sleep. And Data Recording to Every Second. Does your sleep SpO2 drop below 90% (often to 82% or less) on a consistent basis?

Thank you for all all your good detailed videos! Would like to see you test out more of the garmin watches like FR 265 and the new epix and fenix series?
thanks for the review. I recently received the Zepp OS 3.5 update to this watch, which adds so many new features: power and running performance, maps, "automatic" GPS accuracy mode, also heart rate variability and readiness (level of recovery, physical and mental). Do you have any plans to do small tests after this update in terms of GPS accuracy, heart rate accuracy, sleep? Perhaps everything has changed there relative to the old version of Zepp OS 2.1. Thank you
Man if you're going to recommend any alternatives, at least make those recommendations in the similar price range. Everyone knows apple watches are the most accurate, but most of us can't afford them that's why we're having to look at reviews like these
Hi. I really appreciate your channel and the amazing work analyzing these smartwatchs! I am looking forward to your review of the Redmi Watch 3! Congrats for your wonderful channel!
GTS 4 has received numerous firmware updates, claiming it increased HR detection quality, calorie calculation etc. Could you, please, make an update to the review?
Unfortunately, Apple watch is the only one that really lives up to claims. I am not going to buy an iPhone for that. I do not like the restrictive Apple environment, their price system, the "unrepairability", and their ways to oversimplify every product. The Blood sugar measurement they may introduce into their product will be a hit, if it works same well. I think that all smartwatches that have health monitoring functionality should conform to minimum standards. Otherwise, the vendor should say clearly it's for entertainment purposes, and not be allowed to prominently market health functions.
Never liked apple from the beginnning, about 2 decades ago when i bought my first mp3 player, this was way before smartphones, maybe 25 yrs ago when the Rio was king of mp3 player but there was also the ipod, i hated apple from that moment and avoided them, the design always struck me made for people with special needs, i prefer "normal" design.
- I can't help but noticed between 1:45 and 1:52 where you mention "very little movement," the devices are being violently shaken (shook?). - BTW... Why do you not report on SpO2 during sleep on those devices that support that feature? Like Garmin's "all-day and in sleep"? In fact, Garmin is so egregiously inaccurate, their own forums are peppered with "why so bad" and apnea-fear posts, for YEARS. My Garmin reads SpO2 consistently 5-12% lower than actual for sleep or awake spot checks against a Wellue SleepU, an EMAY EMO-80 or a Veridian 11-50K, those three rarely in disagreement, 2% at worst. The Wellue and EMAY are U.S. FDA Class II along with various international medical and industrial registrations and certifications. - Thanks for the reports on the Amazfit GTR/S 4. Disappointing. I'm glad I went with Garmin; well built, feature rich and relatively affordable.
I'm a bit surprised that the actual sleep detection isn't part of the sleep tracking test. Stage detection is definitely important, but for example Apple Watches just don't detect sleep outside of set sleep schedule, while things like GTS 3 (at least) do quite well to pick up the fact that I sleep whenever it happens.
Something I'd love to see in your reviews is step counter performance when attached to the ankle. I want to find a fitness tracker that would calculate my steps while I'm working with a treadmill. I work on the computer so my arms don't move when I'm on it and I can't get step counts. My old fitbit charge 2 used to track accurately but my Garmin Vivoactive 4 is useless when attached to the ankle.
I had the MI band 7 but gave it away cos it did not track my sleep properly. If I went to bed at say 10pm but fell asleep at 1am it showed my sleep started from 10pm which is inaccurate
Hey! Could you maybe try this same watch again (since it performs particularly worse than most), but next time by strapping it to your arm (bicep) with a different band? In the past, I have seen that I get better readings from watches that don't perform well on the wrist and I would be interesting to see if there is actually a difference or just placebo😊. Keep up with your work!

Hello Rob, are you going to test the huawei watch ultimate? Do you have a friend who likes swimming to include this sport in your tests of good heart rate detection?
Exactly. I laughed at the end because his scientific method failed to include the most important factor - price to value ratio. Any $800 watch is supposed to outperformed a $100 watch, duh…
Hi Rob, in your previous video Theresa was wearing Muse S (gen 1) EEG headband as well along with the polysomnography equipment. Do you also have a comparison between Muse S and PSG or Apple Watch ? Available on GT 3 SE and Ultra. Thanks
My Huawei band 8 is due to arrive tomorrow. It also uses the TruSleep™ 3.0 algorithm. I don't expect much improvement. Huawei mentions that it improves sleep measurement by up to 10% over TruSleep™ 1.0.

And how in the end you recommend Apple watch over Amazfit just basically throws away your sense of fair comparison..... It's just like saying, a Toyota Yaris is disappointing car so you cant recommend it, however i could recommend to go for Porsche Taycan which is great in a lot of aspect....
A question after all of the smart watches you have tested which would you recommend for weight lifting and sleep tracking that doesn't cost too much maybe 200-250 MAX? Ive spent many hours trying to find a fitting one but its so hard to get an overview
