some random guy Actually..... I have one of the Walmart darkstar boards, and it’s really not bad for the price. The only criticism I have is the wheels and the deck. Wheels are too soft, deck doesn’t have enough pop. But again for the price, I love it. Young kids who want to skate but aren’t rich, this is a great board.

What did he explain that made you respect Darkstar? You should replay & actually listen. He gets paid by a company to put his old graphics Nobody wanted on their cheap pieces of ish to trick kids into buying what they think is a real Darkstar board. If you weigh more than 110 pounds.... Walmart boards are so stiff in every way that a lot of skater would say they are unskatable. And the deck wouldn't last a day of hard skating. Bushings suck. Trucks seem stiff and you still get wheelbite just trying to lean.
But on the flip side... You gotta pay to play, and kids ain't got money like that to spend 100++ on a legit setup nor do parents want to spend that on a kid who doesn't know if they'll be good at skating or like skating. I skated a 40 dollar darkstar walmart board before and i weigh about 165. At first it was unbearably stiff. After skating for a bit, the bearings and bushings broke in and it was tolerable on smooth concrete. But i still don't particularly like it and i cracked it pretty good on the first day. I thought the trucks needed to be loosened and before i even used a skate tool, they broke in, but then i got wheelbite every 12 seconds. Kids aren't gonna weigh that much or have that point of reference to say these bushings suck compared to bones.

The trucks were half decent, though they weighed like 10 pounds each lol. Ground those trucks to the axle. It was after I actually got semi-good at skateboarding that my dad bought me my first professional complete. Chet has a really good point. I got my first skateboard when I was 5 years old and it was a crappy Nash that didn't roll worth a damn. I got so frustrated that I'd push and push and push and couldn't coast that I figured I was either too small or just wasn't good at it (when you're 5 you don't know enough about physics to know when something's just bad equipment). It wasn't until almost 10 years later I actually got another toy store board, but a much better "X Games" board that did roll and was good enough to learn to roll around and ollie on and then I got a real board shortly after for my birthday from a skate shop. If I had something that could roll and turn from the start I might've actually started skateboarding all the way back then, but thanks to a bad first impression from an inadequate board, I didn't.

Pretty similar to the route I was on, except the NASH board I had rolled just fine. We had a slight downhill asphalt driveway and we had one of those crude 2x4 ramps that I"d run the NASH off, before I knew what Ollie's were. That was like 92 or 93.

I work at Vans, and Steve Cab’s Red Dragon completes are like $80, solid quality for a starter, yet kids and parents keep coming in for penny boards which are $100 - $130. They want what they want, but with my experience in skateboarding, I try to do right by everyone I can and inform them on the comparison and contrast of selling points and features.

Chet Thomas, always one of my favorites. His Battalion part was so legendary, and the switch frontside flip ender is crisp in my mind as the first time I saw it. Grew up with Darkstar - I don't care if they're made in China and sell at big box stores. Still one of my favorite teams and brands.

  • @steven37c

Yoo thats dope and thank you darkstar for doing that. Growing up i was always into "action sports". I remember first watching brink, then taking 2 wheels of my roller blades and i started trying to grind shit and jumping off stuff. Then i remember having the chance to play a video game that flipped my shit changed my life forever and made me want to skate, the one and only THPS1. That game, im pretty sure like myself made many other want to skate as kids. I somehow acquired a cheap china skateboard with plastic wheels and found myself not even being able to roll on concrete so i saved my money for sometime. A few months later i walked over to big 5 with my mom and i bought a oxygen skateboard even though what i really wanted was those old world industries skateboards they sold there at the time but even those were pretty expensive at the time for me to get one. Nonetheless i was stoked to have what i thought was ok skateboard, still remember tearing off all the plastic before i even walked out the store.

After a month I was able to get a complete pro deck but it was a hand me down from someone I went to school with. I'll never forget 17 years ago when I started, Venture trucks were me first pair, spitfire wheels, some mixed bearings lol, black magic grip & shortys hardware.

FLORENCE GANG RED RAGGING - That’s not totally true! Different companies use different presses. I see your point but there’s actually a lot more to it than that.

Thanks for clarifying Chet. Always wondered about that, and admittedly thought the same thing. I've given away tons of used completes by putting together old wheels, trucks, etc. and there are kids who want in but cant afford industry standard prices. And for the last couple of gens of skaters i've heard multiple people talk about getting that first board from wal mart, so to many that IS an entry point. Keep it up man, if haters can do better, they are free to try.

Im 34, always been a fan of skating but never really skated like that. About a year ago I saw walmart carried Darkstar which I thought was odd. It was on sale for like $15 marked down from $30 something like that. It is a 7.75" so I bought it. Pretty decent board. Rolled pretty good. Shortly after though I started learning more and just started putting together my own setups. For the money and for a beginner they are nice. Maybe change out the bearings which is what I also did, with some Reds. Other than that it do what it do!

My first board was a shitty Kryptonics board. Actually, my first 3 were since my dad took them back to Sports Authority and returned them each time since the trucks or a ply would break. A lot of parents don't know about skate shops or don't understand paying $100+ for a complete, especially when they see a board at Wal-Mart for $40. They also don't realize that a skateboard with garbage trucks or a deck that's bound to snap when you try your first loading dock is dangerous. It would've been cool to start out on a few Darkstar boards.

For 10 months I tried to ollie and just could not do it even after reading every trick tip. One day my friend got a board, it was still a cheap one but it actually had some shape.
