    1) H20 YOUR BRAIN: space out your study in small blocks;
    2) ENEMY #1 IS FLUENCY: when you re-read your notes you are just getting familiar with the material. To really master it, you should use active learning (by testing yourself);
    3) TEST * TEACH * MIX: use active learning by testing yourself, by teaching someone else (can be you dog, maybe) and by mixing the subjects;
    4) SLEEPS * NAPS: have a consistent night of sleep and have a siesta during the day;
    5) ZEIGARNIK EFFECT: The Zeigarnik effect suggests that students who suspend their study, during which they do unrelated activities (such as studying unrelated subjects or playing games), will remember material better than students who complete study sessions without a break (Wikipedia).

    I’m glad I found your channel. I’m 53 years old and in my first semester of nursing school so I need all the tips I can get :) I’ve been applying your tips to my study strategies.

    This book is similar to "Make it stick". I'll write down my favorite ideas here. 1. Desirable difficulties: Our brain and body need stress which brings us discomfort zone. Otherwise, they will never be stronger than now. 2. Retrieval practice: This is a quite effective way to transform what we learned into long-term memory. Deriving information from my brain without reading anything is quite powerful way to solidify the memory. 3. Explain what I learned to others by my own words: If I can do this, it proves the fact that I can understand it. If I cannot do, it proves the fact that I pretend to understand.

    Magnificent philosophers note Brian :-) Thanks man! My favorite idea was the information recall. The idea about closing the book and thinking about what I've read to strengthen my ability to remember. I've been doing it lately with the books I've been reading and it's helped a ton. You talked about it in one of your other notes. I don't remember which one it was off hand.
    If you haven't read 'The Values Factor' by Dr. John Demartini, I think you'd enjoy it. Some fascinating tools about our values and how when we link what we don't enjoy to our highest values we awaken our creative genius.
    Enjoy the rest of your day!
    Marlon :-)

    Wonderful note Brian! Thanks for being so generous with your content. Love the ideas of fluency illusion, desirable difficulties and also to test and to teach. I will apply them starting now. Bless you Brian! :-)

    Oh wow, this makes so much sense. I have paid for things in full (just to make it easier for vendors, contractors, service people, etc.) and I have learned the hard way to pay in increments, and never before I need to. Sometimes being trusting can backfire!

    Really like the change to the promotion material at the end too! Keep up the great work! 😀

    Hi Brian once again a great video I really love your work! :) I have a question. Can the subconscious mind just work on one thing at once? If not so on how many tasks can it work at once?

  • @nursinggrad421

    Hey buddy. I followed the tips you talked about here and I think it worked on me. I just finished a 50-point nursing exam on topics: Nursing Process, Communication, Documentation, Teaching & Learning, Infection, and Pharmacology. These are multiple chapters and hundreds of pages. I also had only four days to really study because I’m working part time and we also have lab. I needed a study strategy to improve my memory. And guess what? I got 47/50 which is a 94. I’m convinced that it’s because of your tips because I already took this same exam last year (September 2019) and I got 26/50 which is a grade of 52. I was devastated because I spent 3-4 hours non-stop studying and a total of at least 16 hours per day. I was overworking my brain. So now I’m going to continue doing this technique for Exam 2 which is in three weeks. Hopefully I’ll get a 90s grade again. Thank you. I also joined your membership thing.

      Practice spending 20 minutes lying still and following your breathing everyday.

    • @LauryKytt

      Don't expect to really fall asleep in that 20-30 minutes.
      Just set a timer for 20...30 minutes (not more!!), lay down, close your eyes and just relax. That is enough to give your body and mind a quick refresh.
      It's kind of like meditation for me. Ideally I get to a semi-lucid light sleep state (as if I'm about to fall asleep), but sometimes I don't. Nevertheless I feel better after giving myself that quick brake.
