The "tubes" you refer to were the fuselages of repurposed Redstone missiles. Wehrner von Braun was assigned to the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL (now Marshall Spaceflight Center), and he used what he had to hand for the early Saturn 1/1B first stages. Chrysler constructed the Saturn 1 and 1B at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility near New Orleans.

If you pre-heat the spray paint cans in a container of hot -- never boiling -- water, the paint will flow well and you'll get a much finer/uniform coat.

Tim, how long are you waiting after you do your initial primer coat before you sand? A lot of paints say wait 48 hours for completely dry and before you can paint again, so do you wait 48 hours, or less than that?

Depends on the primer. And unfortunately, I don't recommend any brand. Try experimenting with different brands on test pieces before you commit to a rocket like the Saturn 1B
