    Concrete only weighs about 150 pounds for each cubic foot. Lead is about 650 pounds / cubic foot, so you can get a much lower center of gravity by concentrating the weight in the sailboat's limited keel space. Fishing boats don't have keels like sailboats and don't care as much about a low CG because they dont have sails either, and concrete is cheap so for a fishing boat concrete is the best choice, and for a sailboat, lead is the best choice.

      Thanks. Glad your enjoying them. We'll hopefully be pouring that 15 tons of lead into our keels this winter.

    Hi Doug, hey I FINALLY have a bit of time to start binge watching your many good video's! This one re. smelting your lead is terrific! Very well organised and so simple (when you know how) hey!
    Thank you sir for all that have done and are doing AND for so many other people too! The best of luck and health to you! : )

    Very cool. That is an ingenious setup. All that lead is making me drool. You are a lucky man. One sailboat ballast could supply you with bullets for several years.

    Absolutely. Apropos and hypnotic as the smoke and the liquid lead. That lead rig is fantastic too. It was good to see and I bet you could even do aluminum with a shorter spout or using the tipping to pour into a trough. Very cool.

    My eighty-year old sailboat has 3000 of external lead ballast and there are cracks were the 5/8" bronze keel bolts connect. This ballast was probably once melted in an iron bathtub and that's what I've been thinking of redoing. Your warning about moister have me concerned about the sand mold I would need to make within a box. I'd better warm it up good before pouring.
    Thanks for the time you two took to share the techniques.

    Thanks! Yep, it has worked well for us. Melted 30,000 pounds of lead wheel weights over a three year period. So glad that's done.

    GREAT VIDEO! That really helped me understand how to obtain and melt down lead. Im making lead weights for a submarine me and my friends are constructing. One question though, are there any harmful vapors that are produced in the melting process?

    We hit up almost every tire store in Tulsa. Most of the big chains like Sams, Walmart, and FireStone have their own collection programs. The cheap tire stores will reuse old lead weights. You've got to find the stores that are locally owned and sell quality. For us in Tulsa, that is Robinson Tire. It took several attempts but their 7 stores make up most of our business. We pay 17 cents a pound to the owner, and leave a bag of candy for the tire guys. That bag of candy is very important!

    Lead is dangerous but it's boiling point is over 3000F so vapors are not a huge issue. However I keep the fire pit free of lead. Avoid breathing the dust from the buckets of wheel weights. Always keep children and young ladies away. Stay out of food preparation areas. Don't eat or drink until you have showered. Wash your cloths separate from the family's. When your done for good, dig up the top soil and haul it to the dump. --Doug

    I know this was some time ago, but what were they charging you for the old wheel weights at the tire stores? Also, do you melt down the ingots and pour in the ballast, or throw in the ingots loose? (I'm probably showing my ignorance with that question)

    • @SVSeeker
      @SVSeeker  8 лет назад +1

      +J DeWitt DIY 17 cents a pound. 21 cents with the cost of the candy to bribe the workers, and 2 cents for gas. So about 23 cents a pound. And most of it will get melted down again.

    Lead vapors are only a problem is you exceed the vapor point around (3000F) Just melt the lead, and don't get it much hotter than it's melting point of 620F. A wood fire that takes hours to heat up lead is safer than something like a cutting torch that quickly melts the lead and then could quickly raise the temperature on past the vapor point around 3000F. My goal is die an exciting death. Lead poisoning is not on the list. :)

      @@SVSeeker hahaha...you're not kidding! I've been watching a lot of lead melting videos lately and I've been subscribed to your channel for about a year now. It was actually a really awesome moment when I went from "wow, that guys lead melting setup is really different than anything else I've ever seen" to "HOLY SHIT THATS DOUG FROM SV SEEKER!"
      The RUclips rabbit hole came full circle for me today.

    Mainly I'm too lazy. But the clips, valve stems, lug nuts, occasional brake pad and the other remaining scrap all have small bits of lead clinging to them. The scrap yard would class is as "mixed metals" and only pay $18 to $30 a ton.

    No, you don't. The vapor point for lead is 1300F. Dont get it that hot and your fine. That's why wood is such a good source for the heat.

      +Ronald Allsbury We'll load it with the cranes, melt it down inside the cargo hold and pour it into the keels. About 600 pounds at a time I think.

    Why not just dump the tire weights into the keel and the dump some hot lead on top? So you wouldn't need to melt so many....
    Also, why not just melt the tire weights when your going to pour them into the keel? Seems you have to waste money melting them twice... I hope you don't mind my question. Awesome project!

    • @SVSeeker
      @SVSeeker  8 лет назад

      +leahdin You could not get molten lead at low temps, which is where you want to keep it, to flow very far through cold weights or ingots. You could melt them directly from wheel weight and pour the lead in. But you'll need dump and haul all of the hot steel back out. And would have needed a couple of hundred 5 gal buckets to store them in over that past 6 years. :) And the wood did not cost anything, and it only takes $160 in propane to melt 10 tons of ingots. I like cheap. But I'm not that cheap.
