      Lead is a really dense element. What do you expect?

    • @Psyadin2
      @Psyadin2 8 лет назад +1

      1. its density doesnt matter
      2. its weight does, and no its not at all the same thing
      3. really? the whole point of his comment was that lead IS heavy, he was being sarcastic.

    • @Psyadin2
      @Psyadin2 8 лет назад +1

      *****
      definition of density:
      1. the degree of compactness of a substance.
      2. the quantity of people or things in a given area or space.
      In other words, the density of a metal says how close the atoms are placed, it does NOT say how much each atom weigh, lead atoms are extremely heavy and therefor lead weighs a lot (it is also very dense, but that was beside the point).
      Sorry to rant about this, I'm aware that a lot of people use density in the way you do, but its not 100% correct to equate density with weight.

    they "hacked" the battery out of the car. I think I should start calling my mechanic a hacker.

    • @KeenScout.
      @KeenScout. 8 лет назад +20

      a hacker can also be someone who cuts or hacks into stuff, which he did when he opened the battery in the first vid.

    • @who-dh5xk

      Hacking "the title I hacked this stuff" means he opened it up or broke in with a tool also try a dictionary for once

    • @Volvary
      @Volvary 8 лет назад +1

      In a few years, a subset of mechanics will have to be hackers in a sense with how things are progressing. We are putting more and more tasks in the hand of the central computer of the car after all. So, fixing your breaks? That's a mechanical thing currently. In five years? It might be a software problem.

    • @astreinerboi
      @astreinerboi 8 лет назад +3

      +Volvary hacking just means using stuff for something it was not made for. mostly it's used in the sense of using computers in ways they were nit intended for but if i use my toaster as a door stopper i hacked it. if i use my micowave to build a robot i hacked it and when i use my car battery to get lead and sulfuric acid i hacked it.

    • @Volvary
      @Volvary 8 лет назад

      I never argued his use of hacking didn't make sense, don't get me wrong. All I said was that in a few years, more tech savvy people will need to access inside the onboard computers of cars to correct stuff than right now.

    Most DIY/hardware stores carry a type of clog-busting drain cleaner that's 97% pure sulfuric acid. It's normally in a separate section from the rest of the typical drain cleaners, and comes in scary packaging slathered in warnings. Usually a pretty good source if you don't need lab-grade H2SO4. ;)

    • @daltonend
      @daltonend 8 лет назад +16

      at those temperatures there is no lead vapor but the lead particles and dust is what gets you. if you are cooking up some lead most likely the vapor you see is water or smoke for the flux or trash that was mixed in

    • @daltonend
      @daltonend 8 лет назад +25

      +Bob No. lm just talking for the experience that I have. I love to cast bullets out of recycled lead. where I have have to melt the alloy in a pan and pour the ingots. now I would not put a touch to the lead like the first part but heat a pan on a turkey fryers burner on a cast iron pan ( better heat management) those lead masks only protected you from lead particulates ... the lead vapor masks cost a lot more.. in the range of industries have to order them because of the cost of maintaining them is to great for the everyday worker. by the way rubbing in some ones face that you are wrong without correcting them shows that you are as ignorant so next time you start accusing someone of being wrong please correct them because that's how people learn not by someone telling you its wrong but by someone telling you the what's right. everyone makes mistakes no one needs some prick to rub it in there face

    • @reijik777
      @reijik777 8 лет назад +6

      it's all about ventilation, and with that small amount outside, you're fine. and before the idiots arguing about making bullets start in, I work with lead solder 40 hours a week and use no mask, as we have proper ventilation.

    • @DFX2KX
      @DFX2KX 8 лет назад +2

      ventilation helps. Bullet making usually happens in a reloading room or some room that doubles for it, which is why bullet-making folks go on about masks.

    Someone explain the science behind lead poisoning and why it did or didn't come into effect in this video....

    • @bobodenkirkisafreak
      @bobodenkirkisafreak 8 лет назад +1

      Lead poisoning is when you get too much lead in your body, and it usually takes several months to take effect. They have solid chunks of lead, so it didn't get into their bodies, plus even if it did it would take to long to show effect in the video.

    • @anjirutaru
      @anjirutaru 8 лет назад +3

      you can touch solid lead and not get lead poisoning, but lead that gets into your system can start to accumulate. as long as they washed their hands before eating or smoking, they will be fine as far as lead is concerned.

    • @kylekern2908

      Usually people say eating or touching there mouth and stuff...but you said smoking?

    • @anjirutaru
      @anjirutaru 8 лет назад +1

      +Kyle Kern yes because you tend to think "I'm about to eat, I should wash my hands" but not "I'm about to touch a cigarette then put it in my mouth, I should wash my hands." company I worked for had a big problem with their smokers getting lead poisoning over time. not really the non-smokers though

    • @WillianMichel10

    Tip for future references. If you have access to acetylene cutting torch turn on the acetylene not the oxygen and cover tray or mold with the soot then pour lead in. Preferably warm the mold before pouring it. Lead will just drop out easily when cooled down. Works great for fishing weights and bullets.

    • @Ampera_
      @Ampera_ 8 лет назад

      ***** PYREX was coined as a brand name for Sodium borosilicate. A specially formulated glass that can handle head without shattering and is generally a great cooking material.
      Now in America due to market economic whatever stuff, pyrex is made by a different company in the US only. This company instead uses Soda Lime glass (Windows glass) that is tempered to not instantly explode when heat is applied. However this cheaper soda lime stuff is a lot easier to break from heat shock, and also looks bluer than regular PYREX.
      TL;DR, PYREX and pyrex are two different things. If you want REAL PYREX, it needs to be imported from europe where they use the stronger, nicer Sodium Borosciliate.

    If you are just looking for lead I usually go to a tire center, for a case of beer they will give me a 5 gallon bucket of used tire weights. They are usually pure lead except for the metal clip which doesn't melt so it is easy to remove. It's also cool to watch the steel clips float on top of the liquid lead.

They should've just melted the grids separately and the paste separately, 'cause the latter was mostly slag anyway.

    A couple of points I want to make:
    1. The manufacturers of Pyrex® have changed the formulation of their product from the more expensive borosilicate glass (which has a low thermal coefficient of expansion and so can take the heat) to cheaper soda lime (which has a high TCoE and is more susceptible to shattering). They haven't announced the change, and if you are hurt by their glass shattering they either blame you or buy your silence. Read the January 2011 issue of Consumer Reports magazine, starting on page 44.
    2. You could have made the battery solution consist of more sulfuric acid and less water had you charged the battery fully from an outside power source before taking the battery apart.
