  • Having composed art songs that number in the hundreds, Ned Rorem's numerous works in other genres don't always get as much attention as they deserve. He tends to write in a musical language that welcomes listeners of all backgrounds. But these works never talk down to the audience, as you will discover in his Violin Concerto from 1985.
The piece, at just under twenty-four minutes, is divided into six sections. Rorem says that the concerto could just as well have another title such as "Suite", or even "Variations", since the central theme established at the beginning finds new expressive life in each of the succeeding movements.
José Serebrier leads the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in this particular performance, with Philip Quint as the soloist.
    Paintings by Thomas Hart Benton

Beautiful lyricism, as expected from Rorem.

Brilliant. Beautifully played by the soloist and orchestra. I didn't realise how vast his body of work is.

What a wonderful piece of music! I am not familiar with Ned Rorem's work, so this is a fine introduction. Nice use of counterpoint, a good sense of development, phrasing that makes sense, clean textures, and colorful use of the orchestra. Wow, and no honks and hoots from the clarinets, and the composer that asks the performer to use the correct side of the violin bow. Very traditional--I love it!! Mosaic Classics--what a fine post. Thanks much!!

Œuvre absolument intéressante par son approche à la fois à l'écriture harmonique classique et finalement contemporaine. De la classe !!

Fantastic piece! I love the searching, unquiet lyricism of it. Thanks for posting this.

Very cool music! Nice use of the orchestral pallet. One of the more disappointing moments in my life was having signed up for a songwriting lecture/workshop with Ned Rorem in Seattle back in the early 70's. He had a well established reputation as a songwriter even back then. My excited anticipation was turned to disappointment when the day of the event we were told he had cancelled because he didn't have anything to say! It is often said "those who can, do; and those who can't, teach" which is BS if you look at musical history. But it is true that just because you can do, does not mean you CAN teach!

+Ken Turley I love hearing these kinds of anecdotes. I don't know much about his teaching abilities, but there's no doubt that he had a special touch when it comes to the art song genre. Thanks for sharing that story!

A fitting companion piece to Barber's VC and the Bernstein piece for violin and orch.

When was this written .Nothing like the harmonies in the piano sonata.I think there is also a violin sonata .Kudos for Kremer learning it.I can't believe this is Rorem .The Americanisms I'm used to are not as insistent or even noticeable .rochberg is my fave American concerto.Gubaidulina's viola concerto most impressive I know of last 2 decades.Adams,Higdon,Zwilich for American violin concerti.I want Higdon to write a pf . concerto .I havent heard the percussion concerto yet !The 2nd movement here is more familiar to my thinking of Rorem .I like his violence in 1st mov.Wish it was onger and more incindendiary !

+John e martin III Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think Higdon wrote a piano concerto for Yuja Wang. It would be great to have a recording one day soon.
