Will I think it represents the last episode of s 1 when she was really horny over the guy decision ( forgot his name ) of picking another card instead of the card that he wanted to pick first You didn't remember yet IT'S THAT SCENE THAT EVERY ONE MEMED
Isn't it cool that the president and Yumeko are designed in antithesis, but are very similar? I mean, Yumeko has long, black hair that she keeps untied. Her color is red, as that is most often seen in her eyes and background when she gets riled up. Her eyes are copper and her lips are pink. Kirari, on the other hand keeps her hair tightly kept in braids, while her color is blue. As her eyes and lips are almost identical shades of blue. Despite this, they are the most similar characters in the whole Manga. They both enjoy the risks, and the fun and the people who they play against. Sure, Kirari just seems to be eager for amusement rather than risks: but they have the same drive and determination I can't wait to see the whole series
Fun note on the food imagery: Yumeko's rather strange family name, Jabami, literally means "devouring snake" and it fits her perfectly on so many levels.
7:16 - "Limes" The color has been altered with the playing cards for aesthetic, or throughout the video in fact, but I think you'll find by their shape that those are lemons, limes are more evenly spherical. In fact I think lemons are the most frequently shown fruit in the video while I'm not sure if I saw any limes. This is actually an important distinction given the iconography of lemons in gambling; you've probably seen them depicted on slot machines and other games of chance at some point right? Well it goes back to the 1900s when in America gambling was prohibited as part of the massing political strength of the Puritan Movement. But as anyone familiar with the American Prohibition knows, making things illegal didn't make them go away. Enter gum slots, or more commonly fruit machines. Slot machines proper had existed before this point, so these machines were just a way to engage the consumer in the way slot machines do, while still being technically legal as it was classified as a 'gum dispensing machine' with an element of chance and nothing more (just a step or two away from gum pachinko actually). And it was about what it sounds like. You'd put in some coin, spin the wheels, and get a chance to win some gums if the fruits matched up; lining up cherries got you cherry gum, watermelons got you watermelon gum, etc, etc. Sounds pretty cool right? Well they were pretty popular and appeared in many stores of grocery and convenience during the era. Exit Prohibition, and yet the association of matching up colorful fruit to win stuck, becoming a staple of slot machines and other games of chance commonly found in casinos the world over, earning fruit, especially lemons and a few others, a certain association with gambling itself. So, to go further, while the fruit depicted does do well to make an homage to the character's perspective of the school being a personal Garden of Eden (which lends itself to the seduction of the garden, the draw of gambling, the loss of innocence, the lewdity of the story), it also carries a strong association with gambling within the context of gambling. Especially with the grapes, cherries, lemons, peaches, strawberries, plums, apples, oranges and melons; and just about all of these fruits find their way into the intro (not sure if I spotted melons). While I suppose it hasn't not been done, limes aren't nearly as common or iconic as lemons; they're a less American fruit I guess because of reasons which is probably why. Interestingly, are you familiar with the use of the word lemon to refer to an anime/manga related sexual fiction? Or more commonly, to refer to something, or someone, as defective or useless? Even something that might seem promising but doesn't work out? One last thing, they don't show fish when there's only a guy on screen, they show loads of fish when ladies are. There's a certain association with fish and certain regions of a woman. Very lewd.

Geoff (Mother's Basement) already did an response video to this, so I doubt he'll look into this comment section again, but imho this would deserve to get pinned.
Too many people compare this show to Kaiji, but I think that is not a fair comparison... this show is over the top, surreal in it`s setting, with detestable characters (really bad and crazy people overall), while Kaiji is a lot more grounded in reality and has a relatable main character that makes us want to root for him. This two shows are very different (kind of opposites really), so you can`t really compare them fairly... maybe a comparison with Akagi (another work of Kaiji`s mangaka) would be better... but i don`t really know.

I love how they describe each of the gamblers with just a single scene. Once you see how the character is like you immediately understand their description in the op.
YES! YES YES YES YES YES! The opening song to Kakegarui is sexual and that's the point. Jabami takes an almost sexual pleasure from gambling, and Gambling itself leads in that dirrection as far as the school goes. Domination, submission, the highs of victory and the agony of defeat, all primal, and rough emotions, just like to what you would "feel" I suppose in a sexual encounter.
A lot of people commenting they dont really like this anime, I personally think it's amazing and it's only been 5 episodes! I've almost read the manga, or what's been released, and I so look forward to see it in the anime!!
Something you didn't mention: The food and gambling relationship is also expressed in the series with the same japanese expression used in both situations: Itadakimasu. It's what you say before meals but in a gambling context it can mean "please give me the prize". You can hear Yumeko use it several times throughout the show.

He did mention heavy manga spoilers. I think this video should only be watched by people who have read it and I do agree that it might be too early to release it. Also, it's not on crunchyroll
On that note you left at the end, Kakegurui, despite it's name, I don't think it's that much interested on gaming strategies nor on making them exciting. Those are only a means to an end. That end being to showcase the characters' madness. And I think it's working pretty damn well. Think about it like this, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde but instead of a strange potion it's gambling what triggers the transformation.
A gambling anime without characters having huge, sharp noses? 2/10 get this bullshit out of my FACE. WHERE EVEN ARE THE ZAWA ZAWAS? YOU CAN'T HAVE A GAMBLING ANIME WITHOUT THE ZAWA ZAWAS!
Wtf... NGNL isnt even all that good... I mean its fun but there arnt any stakes at all and the anime ends at a purposefully annoying spot. The two mains are ALWAYS in control ALWAYS have a plan and ALWAYS reveal the plan at the end in some BS way. By contrast kakegurui is about exposing how each player is cheating and building this sort of cycle of self destruction that is going to end badly for everyone.
I really hope this first season ends right after the gamble with Manyuda. I really want to see it end with Yameko face to face with the student council president and their discussion about a supernova, which would be so epic and satisfying.
I'm what the kids call Cringy Second season is announced lol It would be interesting to see the other families coming to the school in the anime as well.
I haven't watched the anime yet but been reading the manga for the past 3 months and enjoying it and the anime looks like it's sticking close 2 the manga which is a good thing
Not part of the OP but has anyone else realized that the while Yumeko’s color is red and the Prez’s is Blue Runa’s eye color is purple (red and blue combined) which symbolizes her neutrality in their big finale with the tarot card game?
A pretty great video for one of my current binge-reads/watches, and probably now a gateway to other Gambling/Game styled Non-battle Battle anime. I certainly missed a lot of the less obvious symbolism in the OP, but glad I seemingly caught the most obvious bits. Also, Yumeko is pretty much best girl, but every lady is great.
It looks like its more focused on the Gambling, than say... the excessive reactions, so it'll probably be a vastly different watch, but hopefully still enjoyable! Thanks for the recommendation.
Holy shit, I never noticed the arches thing. Did you notice too that the types of fish floating by change for most of the characters' individual scenes? (One of Sumeragi's looks to be an Angelfish and Midari's a Pirahna, etc) Do you think there's any significance in that?
You should try "Ballroom e youkoso" or "Welcome to the ballroom". It is a dancing anime made by production IG and personally I think it has the best OP this season. It just makes you hyped like Haikyuu did. I hope you tackle that show
Just confirmed: I've Written 3 full paragraphs about it in response to someone, but you can also be talking about the pinned commentary in the youtube's first search result for kakegurui OP, which has 4 paragraphs talking about it.
This is cute, but let's stop beating around the bush. I demand the Attack on Titan Season 2 Anime opening you promised back at the Castle Point anime convention. Still waiting FOR SOMEONE TO EXPLAIN WHAT THE HECK IS UP WITH THE BEAST TITAN AND ALL ANIMALS RUNNING ACROSS THE SCREEN!!! Seriously someone please explain the significance of it. I'm completely caught up on the manga and it still makes no sense to me.
Lobster Magnet's Review: The Channel p.s, I read this off kissanime someone said in the comments it could symbolize that you need to be big enough to deal with your surroundings. The beast titan is basically a shifter, unless you didn't watch all of the season and the ending. He has special powers, blah blah blah.
that makes no sense and I know all the manga spoilers about the beast titan and his identity and none of that makes sense with all the animals and dinosaurs charging with the beast titan decimating the souls of humanity. Because the beast titan is not the pinnicle of evolution or some elemental force of nature.
Loved the analysis and now I get the plot; the opening seems way more intriguing now that I know the plot. And to hear that the two of them are twins blew me away; would never have saw that coming, since I have not read the manga but am watching the anime. Can't wait for all these reveals. :) Keep up the fun analysis videos like this. :) God bless yours and you! :)
In the manga we always see Midari grinning ear to ear on her phone when in the school council room. I can't help but imagine she's on Live Leak or something.
I would 100% participate in the contest if not for 1) I'm collecting the manga in physical form on my shelf, so it'd be a waste of money to get them via book walker and 2) As much as I would love to display either of those two prizes, the amount of questions it would raise from guests would make me have to hide it somewhere, unfortunately (doesn't help that while people around me irl know I'm an otaku, they generally have 0 understanding of anime/think it's either just kid shows or hentai) Also, I would never win. Good vid though, Geoff.
As much as I like the anime, it doesn't leave you room to discover the cheats: -In RPS none of the hints Yumeko said was shown to us, neither the eyes of bystanders nor a hint that the guy was exatly behind her. -In the Memory card game, the card backs all have the same pattern, and if you track the cards after they admitted the cheat, they don't even match up to the same cards. -In the Sword Roullete, the hands of the dealer and the girl at the entrance was straigh-out of camera, you couldn't see it prior to when Yumeko talked about. -In the Indian Poker meeting, we have no hints AT ALL about how they cheat, as the anime hasn't shown yet, I won't say it here as it will be spoilers. The only one you could tell how Yumeko Won before she said how, was the Tower of Doors one, which I could call how the tower worked by thinking about what was shown alone.
Murilo E dos Reis that's my problem as well. It's supposed to be psychological but we the audience are in nobody's head and just watch when they reveal how they found out the other was cheating. Also I hate that beta male.
Murilo E dos Reis That's my biggest gripe with the show. You can't figure out anything yourself except by sheer guessing and you basically have to wait for the show to tell you. It's the most garbage way of making the MC seem smart.
Hey, cool thing I noticed! In the scene where Yumeko is about to "eat" herself, the between the legs shot is framed twice! Food Yumeko is shown between the legs of Fork Yumeko, but Fork Yumeko herself is sitting between Food Yumeko's legs. It's a double!
I have to say, this show is the most fun i've ever had with a sports/competitive anime. Everything from the character designs, surrealism, over the top batshit crazyness just appeals to me more than most anime that try to be this over the top. Even the fanservicey shit is over the top to the point it adds on as a plus instead of being pointless like most shows. Its my ultimate guilty pleasure animes
Also, in the shot with Mary at the start, there’s three arches next to her, and she’s under one of them. I feel like that’s a reference to their rock-paper-scissors game, where she made a strategy that she will always only have to throw out one type of card to win. Like her cheat is also there
for some reason, I love the singer's "squeal" (not sure what else to call it) that she does in the beginning, and when she says "my honey" at the end of the opening
The fruit in the background is supposed to be a reference to slot machine symbols I'm pretty sure, but I agree about the fish and the president's metaphor since it's pretty obvious.
Summer season is in it's 4th or 5th week, so both summaries of spring season and first impression videos for summer would be late now. Which means it is a good time to ask about it
No Data because someone in their loosely-associated group usually does is why I ask. Jeff did a preview of the Spring Season for his podcast back when, but I guess none of the normal cast of ani-Tubers kept up with current anime for the last couple of seasons is how it sounds.
I ignored the intro when it was shown in the first episode and ever since I've been skipping it but I really should've paid attention to how much it symbolized. It's so genius.
I feel enriched and maybe even a little bit enlightened after watching this video. Also your voice needs to be on ESPN as well. The enthusiasm is infectious. Great animation and Great Stuff! Edit: Yumeko, and Ayame (from Shimoneta) reveal to me that I have a type.
This is an opening that becomes more interesting and intense with each epispde you watch. You may not notoce the meanings behind each frame... *but your brain does.*
I subbed for what's in an OP and was really missing them, but this is an especially strong video in general! I'm actually really happy to hear she was licking a bleeding bruise, rather than it just being complete "aesthetic bait"
UppsyGodisSak No it's so fucking easy to see through, I don't want him to waste it on a op who clearly spell out who's going to win with, the red strings of fate cliche'
When you said this opening gave Mob Psycho and Jojo a run from their money I was like o.O I have only read the first 3 chapters of Kakegurui and I knew the opening had references and meaning but I didnt know it was so good o.o
I just wanna mention that when the Student Prez is whispering in Yumeko's ear, it syncs up with the song line 'Dare ni mo makenai' (I won't lost to anyone) Or in any case, the 'Dare ni mo' part. Switches to Yumeko on the 'makenai'. Basically a standoff where they know the other can actually bring some challenge and fun to.
the idol also has limes in his arch 'cause manyuda helps her and has fish in it representing her fan club that protects her, the same could be say that way limes appear when both idols appear.
God Damn it, why can't we get simuldubs for shows like this? People wonder why pirating is so common in Anime, well here's why. All I want, is for big fuckin studios like Funimation to dub the shows they license, while they come out, and to stop licensing shitty shows. Is that so much to ask?
SimulDub is pretty hard to do, unless they receive the episodes prior to the airing :p Even for Subbed simulcast, it takes a hour with a team of professionals.
Because if they did that it'd turn out shitty? Having to translate the entire episode, then record it, AND release it that week every week is not a fate I'd wish on anyone. Esp. since anime fans tend to be extremely picky about dubs. It just doesn't seem worth it.

Cliff Pierre You Sir, have -shit- Greato Daze Taste
Kaiji ?
You know it!
Kaiji is the best
AKEGI!!!!
I'm what the kids call Cringy Second season is announced lol
It would be interesting to see the other families coming to the school in the anime as well.
Totally are in lesbains?
Scott Pilgram reference.
...if only I had the kind of conversations where that could be used as a verbal crutch :C
In fairness, it wasn't very applicable when Scott used it either.
+Tubble Stop Sounds like you're projecting your insecurities there pal
A pretty great video for one of my current binge-reads/watches, and probably now a gateway to other Gambling/Game styled Non-battle Battle anime.
I certainly missed a lot of the less obvious symbolism in the OP, but glad I seemingly caught the most obvious bits.
Also, Yumeko is pretty much best girl, but every lady is great.
Irish Nonsense Gaming watch kaiji for non battle gambling show
It looks like its more focused on the Gambling, than say... the excessive reactions, so it'll probably be a vastly different watch, but hopefully still enjoyable! Thanks for the recommendation.
This is one of my favorite openings
"Sex faces for the uniniated" What, so we're a cult now? XD
Idk why but I really love this anime. It might not be a ‘risky’ sort of gambling anime but it has a certain charm to it. Like this opening.
"In depth analysis"
proceeds to repeat upskirt scene several times*
(grabs tissue) *keep em coming*
Holy shit, I never noticed the arches thing. Did you notice too that the types of fish floating by change for most of the characters' individual scenes? (One of Sumeragi's looks to be an Angelfish and Midari's a Pirahna, etc) Do you think there's any significance in that?
You should try "Ballroom e youkoso" or "Welcome to the ballroom". It is a dancing anime made by production IG and personally I think it has the best OP this season. It just makes you hyped like Haikyuu did. I hope you tackle that show
Kakerugui ED when?
JuSaKuO the ed is trash fanservice with little to no meaning.
FabledDead no kidding, I've seen someone write two paragraphs about how meaningful it is lol
I think that was me, but can't confirm :kappa:
Just confirmed: I've Written 3 full paragraphs about it in response to someone, but you can also be talking about the pinned commentary in the youtube's first search result for kakegurui OP, which has 4 paragraphs talking about it.
Murilo E dos Reis lol yes the one on kiranime
This is cute, but let's stop beating around the bush. I demand the Attack on Titan Season 2 Anime opening you promised back at the Castle Point anime convention. Still waiting FOR SOMEONE TO EXPLAIN WHAT THE HECK IS UP WITH THE BEAST TITAN AND ALL ANIMALS RUNNING ACROSS THE SCREEN!!! Seriously someone please explain the significance of it. I'm completely caught up on the manga and it still makes no sense to me.
Lobster Magnet's Review: The Channel p.s, I read this off kissanime
someone said in the comments it could symbolize that you need to be big enough to deal with your surroundings.
Lobster Magnet's Review: The Channel
Hey I was there ^^
He's such a cool guy in person
Lobster Magnet's Review: The Channel yes
That Shiro statue looks a bit too NSFW
String-Bikini grade-school loli wouldn't be the pride of my shelf, at least.
Eh
Fictional so idc
This show is just simply a joy to watch.
Okay but I’ve still watched both seasons and I’m obsessed.
Shit, it's that awkward gambling show
Awkward, intriguing and fun to watch, you know, kinda like that awkward ecchi food anime, or thar awkward little sister x big bro anime.
not awkward, horny
Girl turns out by gambling.
i found one known as guardian reading this super long username that is super fucking stupid
Because it's actually alright.
In Midari's scene in the opening the midari hanging upside down is also very similar to how most terror cards depict the hanged man
I've literally been waiting for this!
Speaking of Kaiji, You should totally do a Kaiji video one day
Thank you, Mother's Basement. I'd really been missing the What's in an OP's.
this anime is the gambling version of shokugeki no souma, and i love it
Runa is my favorite i love how she just goes from a happy child to just as crazy as everyone else at the drop of a hat.
In the manga we always see Midari grinning ear to ear on her phone when in the school council room.
I can't help but imagine she's on Live Leak or something.
I would 100% participate in the contest if not for 1) I'm collecting the manga in physical form on my shelf, so it'd be a waste of money to get them via book walker and 2) As much as I would love to display either of those two prizes, the amount of questions it would raise from guests would make me have to hide it somewhere, unfortunately (doesn't help that while people around me irl know I'm an otaku, they generally have 0 understanding of anime/think it's either just kid shows or hentai)
Also, I would never win.
Good vid though, Geoff.
"...a glorious trip to jail with Shiro."
The manga is truly an experience and the anime isn't anything short of amazing either. I'm so glad you could cover this OP because it's so great.
Yep, Kaiji was way better... This is just over the top crazy. Still, I find it interesting trying to figure out how they cheat.
As much as I like the anime, it doesn't leave you room to discover the cheats:
-In RPS none of the hints Yumeko said was shown to us, neither the eyes of bystanders nor a hint that the guy was exatly behind her.
Lordand Savior We are suppose to be in male mc position. You know, the one who caught up in gambling and shit like that.
At least the Beta Male can see more things in the game :/
FINALLY I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS AND YOU ARE THE IDEAL PERSON TO ANALYZE THIS THANK YOU SO MUCH
Hi dude, why not do a "What's is an OP" of Cruel Angel's Thesis from Evangelion AND Sweet Suger Nightmare from Bakemonogatari??? Would be great
The scene where Umeko becomes bubbles and ascend might also be a metaphor of her ascending the aquarium of gambling.
Kakerugui. A.K.A "And you thought Hellsing had too many maniacal grins."
Mary is best girl
Sigurd's BBQ nah Yumeko is
Both are.
I HAVE BEEN FREAKING WAITING FOR THIS
ACCA still has the best OP this year.
Knight Warrior quite good ... but i dont think its that good
Nervein Z what is your personal favourite OP this year?
?
Hey common of course it is.
Knight Warrior Easily.
I see that Noragami cap from lootanime. -u-
I just found your channel and I'm addicted already, keep up the good work
A video that isn't clickbait garbage? NANI?!?!
Also, in the shot with Mary at the start, there’s three arches next to her, and she’s under one of them. I feel like that’s a reference to their rock-paper-scissors game, where she made a strategy that she will always only have to throw out one type of card to win. Like her cheat is also there
Not watching the show but that was a great video. Very well done :]
for some reason, I love the singer's "squeal" (not sure what else to call it) that she does in the beginning, and when she says "my honey" at the end of the opening
Please cover Princess Principal Geoff. I really want to know what you think of the Op.
Wow, I'm impressed. Your analysis was really in-depth. Looking forward for more
0:57 So Jeff is a lolicon afterall
LeCatization Digibro corupted him
LeCatization Just because he's giving away the statue doesn't mean he likes it.
He called it beautiful
The fruit in the background is supposed to be a reference to slot machine symbols I'm pretty sure, but I agree about the fish and the president's metaphor since it's pretty obvious.
So... is nobody doing a season review of the spring anime, or previews for the summer anime? :(
Why would they? Spring season ended a long time ago and summer season started a long time ago
Icynox46 Watch Made in Abyss, ignore everything else.
There's your recommendation video.
Icynox46
Demo's dead mate.
I ignored the intro when it was shown in the first episode and ever since I've been skipping it but I really should've paid attention to how much it symbolized. It's so genius.
that shiro figurine is messed up damn... she's 11
Good job making the video without going overboard on the spoilers.
I thought liar game was way more clever with its games than kakegurui but the latter is still entertaining as fuck
for some reason i love the ending song so much, feels like representation of climbing in ranks to chellenge the boos
I really wanna see you do the third ED of My Hero Academia.
Just cos.
Me and my friend literally call it angry lesbains
This is an opening that becomes more interesting and intense with each epispde you watch.
You may not notoce the meanings behind each frame...
*but your brain does.*
Please do SpongeBob SquarePants anime opening
I subbed for what's in an OP and was really missing them, but this is an especially strong video in general!
I'm actually really happy to hear she was licking a bleeding bruise, rather than it just being complete "aesthetic bait"
Now I really want you to analyse Koi to Uso's opening.
UppsyGodisSak No it's so fucking easy to see through, I don't want him to waste it on a op who clearly spell out who's going to win with, the red strings of fate cliche'
He could probably find some special meaning in it.
I never knew I could learn so much from an intro of a minute and 30 seconds
You should do the Koi to Uso OP
When you said this opening gave Mob Psycho and Jojo a run from their money I was like o.O
I have only read the first 3 chapters of Kakegurui and I knew the opening had references and meaning but I didnt know it was so good o.o
It's not ahegao, it's gesugao.
HereIsPlaty wtf I'm looking up the second one
HereIsPlaty oh it's not as funny as I thought
I just wanna mention that when the Student Prez is whispering in Yumeko's ear, it syncs up with the song line
'Dare ni mo makenai' (I won't lost to anyone)
Or in any case, the 'Dare ni mo' part. Switches to Yumeko on the 'makenai'. Basically a standoff where they know the other can actually bring some challenge and fun to.
this is why I don't watch this in my living room
the idol also has limes in his arch 'cause manyuda helps her and has fish in it representing her fan club that protects her, the same could be say that way limes appear when both idols appear.
Boku no Pico has the best OP of all time.
i like the 3rd opening best " Tsurette te"
so overused....
ra nia still true
>69 likes
I totally want to see more analysis like this! Awesome job!
WHEN 2017SUMMER WEEBCAST???
Turza that's been out for a while
2:48 I know the meaning behind that shot
It's about demonetization
God Damn it, why can't we get simuldubs for shows like this? People wonder why pirating is so common in Anime, well here's why. All I want, is for big fuckin studios like Funimation to dub the shows they license, while they come out, and to stop licensing shitty shows. Is that so much to ask?
Not just that, but even for subs, Netflix just doesn't understand anything besides binge watching
SimulDub is pretty hard to do, unless they receive the episodes prior to the airing :p
Even for Subbed simulcast, it takes a hour with a team of professionals.
Because if they did that it'd turn out shitty? Having to translate the entire episode, then record it, AND release it that week every week is not a fate I'd wish on anyone. Esp. since anime fans tend to be extremely picky about dubs. It just doesn't seem worth it.
lol funimation have been releasing awesome simuldubs since 2014
sigh824 Space Dandy though.
My favorite 'gambling type game theory' manga is definitely Liar Game. It was one of the first manga I read so it has a special place in my heart.
