    Nice video! I just retired after being a NYCTA employee for 27 years, 25 of them as a train operator (motorman). I worked the lines from that just about my whole career because I live near there. I liked the old terminal much better than this one, the current roof traps heat and noise and the view of the area is restricted by the low overhang on the east and west sides. The old station provided excellent, unobstructed views of the shore. The connection between the N platform and the Brighton line is used for light trains coming and going between Brighton Beach terminal and either Stillwell Yard or Coney Island Yard which are both accessible from Stillwell terminal. They also reroute N trains via the Q line using those tracks when there is a blockage on the N line. Stillwell terminal is very busy serving 4 lines, and the run through yard lay-ups from the B line as well. It gets congested at times.

    The buildings behide is my parents home. They have been living there since 1993 and still living there. Before it was all the black folks but then the Russians came and took over those buildings and the parks near by it and named it Luna park. I was raised in stillwell ave in Brooklyn and went to high school there and know every train stations. It always makes me feel like home when I see these kinds of videos. I always miss Brooklyn more then anywhere else in New York. Thank you for the upload and it means alot to me. 👍👍😍😊❤

    The change to the appearance of the station is very pleasing to the eye. I remember how it was in the 50s, when the Steeplechase was still the main attraction here in Coney Island. Departing from the trains was the fun part it was an extremely long walk down in inclined walkways to get to the street level, it was almost as good as the Steeplechase some days. During Summer months of July, August and early September, is when we came here to Coney Island, though I told my Dad once, I really rather go a Brooklyn Dodger game, but it never happened, until i had moved to Los Angeles, and was invited to a Dodger/Mets game, I think in was the World Series, as it was mid October,m 1969, finally got to the Dodgers, but my team by this time was the NY Mets! lol Go figure. Great history tour D j Hammers!

    Great video! My uncle was a transit patrolman with the NYCTA long before the merger with NYPD, and Stillwell terminal and West 8th street station was his beat. This video brought back lots of memories of Coney Island from the '70s.

    I live in NNJ and when in NYC I sometimes ride the subway. Your work, here is GREAT ! Thanks very much for all your postings ! I get so caught up in it. Sometime you should do one on how the signaling system works please. Its a bit confusing when there are single and double crossovers.

    Two criticisms of your stellar work. Written captions need to be left up a little longer so we can watch the video and read the captions. Also, if you could put the captions just a little higher, they won't be covered by video info at the bottom of the screen.

    Those old pictures of the Coney Island station is the Coney Island station I know! I like the unobstructed view of the old days better but more importantly, I gotta get used to the "D" train as the West End line instead of the "B" and my beloved "M" train on the brighton tracks as well as the "QB" which is now the "Q". I guess the only mainstay is the "F" and the "N" trains. I really guess I need to move back to New York or visit it regularly. Thanks for the video!

    Hey DJ hammers You know as New Yorker myself born and raise in the Bronx every time I when I go to Coney Island or even see Coney Island for some reason I'm always thinking of the Gta 4 tbogt game which is one of the DLC's to the gta 4 game with Niko belic can because since the game is set in NYC but anyway before I do the missions I like to drive from Harlem which is where Luis Lopez live in the game to Coney Island and to the Bronx and back to Manhattan I so like to tour around city first before I do the missions but except in the game Coney Island is small due to the limited space that rockstar had back when gta 4 first came out back in 2008 but at least they got all the rides and entire amusement park with the beach and instead of the stillwell avenue stop being on the left side of Coney Island like it is in real life it's near the middle of the double deck Elevated structure.

    Lived between Kings Hwy and Ave. U on the Brighton Line. Went to John Dewey HS from 1969-1972. Took at the time the QJ to CI and transfered to the B (West End) for one stop going in the morning. In the afternoon, a QJ train was at Bay 50th Street from John Dewey went to CI and switched from the West End to the Brighton line eliminating switching trains..very convenient. They did this I guess because a large population of the school lived along the Brighton line.

    I have heard of Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue as the "anchor" to the NYC Subway system, for two reasons. First off, it is the southernmost station on the line (I believe, just look at the map). Secondly, the fact that it is terminus to 4 major lines that connect to 4 of the boroughs and its proximity to the Coney Island Yard make extremely important. Basically, if this station is closed, there is a big problem.

  • @anonymous3738
    @anonymous3738 3 месяца назад

    0:09 Actually, each island platform is the end of each of the four separate lines that terminate here and each line here is currently served by only one service. This is why each service gets its own platform as mentioned in this video. If any line had more than one service running to here, its platform would be served by more than one service and it’s currently possible by extending the G from Church Ave and the B from Brighton Beach, but those changes are unfeasible due to them having to share their terminal with the F and Q, respectively and the insufficient turning capacity.

    Did they completely do away with the closed deck trackways that this train station used to have? I ask this because I remember when the "dual contracts" era station was still standing. The station tracks I remember were "subway" tracks you'd see below ground. This was the 1990s early '00s. At that time, the trains were the B, D, F , N and sometimes the Q train on rare occasions. The Q train only went as far as Brighton Beach and had mainly "slant" R40 type cars.

    6:31 tell me about it! Thank God for "Save Safe Seconds"! 6:38 It has to "key-by" not one, but two automatic signals (it bridges the insulated joint while the stop-arm goes down and stays down) before it can proceed to the 10-car marker, otherwise the train goes BIE (brakes in emergency) and then we're in a bit of trouble! As a train operator, I can tell you that it is a bit easier to do with New Tech equipment than it is with R46 or R68 equipment!

    The "D" train has changed it's route many times. The 'Concourse-Culver' line used to be the "D" train up until some time in the 60's. The "D" train then ran down the Brighton Line (which used to be the "Q" or "QJ" IIRC). The "F" train was then extended from it's Second Ave terminal to run on the Culver line, where it remains today.
    Now it appears (since I've left NYC) that the West End line is now the route of the "D" train.

    • @collinparsons3363

      The D moved to the West End Line while the B moved to the Brighton Line to eliminate the need for late night or weekend shuttles to serve all the stations. The D, F, N, and Q all serve their respective lines at all times and the B provides extra express service on the Brighton Line.

    DJ, in your opinion, why don't they extend the B down Brighton express to Coney Island, from it's current terminal. It must be annoying when a B train has to use one of the tracks to get to the yard. Schedule problems. Anyways, why don't they extend the B down Brighton express to Coney island.

    • @sethlewin7815
      @sethlewin7815 5 лет назад +2

      The Brighton express has always terminated at Brighton Beach; the local continued to Coney Island. Has been so since the 50s and probably farther back than that.

    • @tyderrick85
      @tyderrick85 5 лет назад +1

      The B train used to go to coney island when it ran on the west end line. Back then the Q was the Brighton Express and the D was the Brighton local. I believe in the early 2000s is when things got switched up to how things are now.

    I still prefer the old station. It had an architectural soul to it. It was part of Coney Island. I'd much rather they restored what was there, because it sorely needed it. But, this has absolutely none of the character and design charm of those old stations. Just another piece of NY gone.
