The station is nowhere near as bad as it was in the 2000’s. The renovations and improvements did wonders. It’s not perfect but it’s a night and day difference.
They renovated it and this was the result? Look I must admit, it's in such bad shape it's probably easier to just demolish it and start over again. It's good that it's night and day compared to 15 years ago, but it's still in a whole nother universe to your average station in most other cities. It's sad that the New York subway has so little money to do the most basic things :(
Great news, it’ll stay like this even more thanks to Gov Hochul postponing congestion pricing forcing the MTA to defer and postpone projects. Great leadership y’all /s
It has been rumored that the reason why Chambers St. was never rebuilt was because it would have been the the south terminus of a full length full Second Ave subway. If that would have been the case, then the station would have been rebuilt. That's what I've heard.
The Chambers St. station was used in the 1955 film "Somebody Up There Likes Me". This film starred Paul Newman as prize fighter Rocky Graziano. AB's were the trains at the station in the film. Look for it on TCM.
That's a beautiful entrance to the station. Why let the station deteriorate like that? All that damage has happened over many decades. These are the kind of old stations where it's worth completely restoring and modernizing, too Is this station ADA accessible? Are there elevators? Thanks.
There are elevators. The station has a beautiful Entrance because it was supposed to be the center piece of the BMT subway multiple lines terminating there and running through there. But all of these lines didn’t end up happening and only 2 lines go through now. The station was built with many platforms for lirr service and other subway service which didn’t end up happening leading 3 abandoned platforms this gives the station its eerie tone
Yes the stations were made ADA compliant in 1992 with the addition of three elevators. Like the rest of the station, those elevators all have a a very distinct aroma…
Now that station was built in 1908 so you tell me why the MTA has not done the upkeep to keep it in better conditions. It's cheaper do have done the maintenance that a total repair which is needed now. They are always losing money due to poor management. Also even if congesting pricing passes they will be broke in the first year. Why is the MTA always broke well they hire people to do the work them they hire contractors to do the same work. So they pay twice for the same job. LOL
Another reason is when ever they have a budget problem the first thing to get cut is maintenance. I worked for the City on a Public School Custodial staff and the City did the same thing in the past to the Schools, They cut the cleaning and maintenance budget and later they were wondering why the some of the school buildings were falling apart. Before I retired, They laid off most of the carpenters that would repair and replace doors at all of the schools.
@@JohnnyT002 What is irking me the most is the city has so much money for the migrants which all the others that came before got noting yet for the Tax Payers they have nothing. Ask narcissistic Robert Moses. He hated mass transit and did what he could politicly to make sure all financial resources went to highways and bridges/ tunnels for cars, trucks....
I love the Chambers street station and its dirty cousin the Bowery station one stop up. It's only because of RUclips I learned there are other levels to the Bowery station.
WoW, what a vast improvement from the third world cesspool the station was for many neglected years. Not a fully rehabilitated station but better. Unfortunately the two legged animals walking around the station and subway in general continue to destroy.
The street entrance is where the "that's not a knife" scene from Crocodile Dundee was filmed, if I'm not mistaken.

I remember the station back in the 1990s looking like the opening shot. Glad to know it’s been fixed up since then
I like the old style. It need a lot of work and I hope they do. Nice video 👍😁

The two middle tracks were for the M train when it went to Bay Parkway, it’s connects to the R train through the Montague Tube
Once in a blue moon you will have the M trains running in and out of chambers street

Gun-soaked? Naw urine makes more biologically sense.
Why object? its the truth! Thanks to the 2 legged animals walking around the system.
