Dave Malloy is one of the best modern composers on Broadway right now. His composition techniques throughout Great Comet’s score are Sondheim levels of genius.
His voice is so relaxing to me. Sorry to all you Dear Evan Hansen fans, please try not to get triggered, but I feel like this show was robbed of at least a few more awards. (I'm not saying that they didn't deserve anything; this is just how I feel. It's like what Lin says: "If your show has made it this far, congratulations you've already won.") But nevertheless, it's still loved. I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon. Hopefully, they'll figure out how to do a tour. That'll be amazing!
I say it would be beneficial, and argument-ably less costly, if they did the tour the same way as the off-broadway production and build their own space around each city. It would be so cool to walk by the center theatre group in LA and see a tent for the show occupying a spot near the fountain across from the Mark Taper Forum, and downright Hilarious if right next to the LA Opera House (i.e. "I cannot follow the opera"), rather than going through the trouble of moving all the seats out of the Ahmenson Theatre (Or even the Pantages theatre, if they do it around that area). I just feel It would be great if the tour can use the advantage the off-broadway production provided for them.(Like a traveling circus, so to speak, but with no clowns(Despite pierre "wearing clown shoes" till the end of the show. XD and despite David Malloy almost within the Sondheim ranks of musical composers and lyricist(i.e. "Send in the Clowns" XXXD) That's my opinion though, What do you think?
I prefer the OBCR than the OCR because of Groban, primarily, but I prefer Dave's version of Pierre & Natasha more. The vulnerability in his voice in this song is a stark contrast to his "rough" and "scruffy" voice (for the lack of a better word). And this song is actually my favorite from the musical (okay, head-to-head with Pierre, maybe). *sigh* Give this genius all the good things in the world. He deserves no less.
Honestly, this guy deserves as much of a following and recognition as Lin Manuel Miranda has now! A few other things I picked up from the penultimate song: - What I think is the Gm6 (I don't have the music with me so this is all from memory) when Pierre says "stop, stop" also holds right before his spoken lines. It only shows up in those two moments when Pierre stops the music and starts letting his emotions out. - Natasha's last "Oooh Pierre" is also a direct callback to Pierre's song, but this time sung very delicately and with care, instead of the disgust and pity the cast sings it with in the beginning. - When it finally resolves into the D major it also goes into The Great Comet of 1812, which is quarter notes throughout. In "Pierre" and once in "Dust & Ashes" there's a syncopated melody that seems to be like an inner turmoil rhythm. Not only do we get the major in the final song but we also get a steady and consistent rhythm as Pierre finally feels some sense of peace.
Since Dave explains his music like this, in a way that make sense, so easily, someone tell me why the heck Sideways doesn't fricking listen to the album and give us his take on it???

I would love a Great Comet tour. Of course, it'd be pretty hard to rebuild all those theaters to that set, but I bet they could do it.
